Update Loki reference screenshots only after you have run the visual comparison and confirmed that the changed appearance is intentional. Run yarn loki test, inspect the captured screenshots and difference images, then use yarn loki approve for changes you mean to accept. If a difference is a regression or test-environment problem, fix it and rerun instead of refreshing the baseline.
Why reviewing comes before approving
A reference screenshot is the expected appearance Loki compares against. Replacing it without reviewing the latest capture can make an unintended UI change look accepted. Treat approval as a code-review decision: confirm what changed, why it changed, and whether the new appearance is correct before updating the reference.

Loki’s documented cycle is to start Storybook and any required simulator or emulator, create initial references with yarn loki update, make UI changes, run yarn loki test, inspect the output, and approve intended changes with yarn loki approve. See the Loki Getting Started guide and the Loki README. Confirm commands and options against the Loki version pinned in your project.

- Start the capture environment. Start Storybook before running Loki. Start the iOS simulator or Android emulator too if your configured target requires one; Loki does not start these for you. Loki’s README lists Docker Chrome, Chrome in AWS Lambda, local Chrome, iOS simulator, and Android emulator among its targets. Choose the one your project is configured to test.
- Create references only when bootstrapping. For an initial baseline, run
yarn loki update. The command captures screenshots and updates references; it is not the routine way to handle every test failure. - Run the comparison after a UI change. Run
yarn loki test. This compares the current captures with the stored references and reports differences. - Inspect both sides of the comparison. Open the current screenshots and the difference images. The Getting Started guide describes output in
loki/currentandloki/difference; actual paths can vary with version or configuration. Check the changed component in context, including text, spacing, colors, clipping, missing elements, and any story state that could affect the capture. Loki’s guide says to make sure the changes are correct before continuing. - Choose the appropriate action. If the change is intended and looks right, run
yarn loki approve. If it is unintended, leave the references alone, fix the implementation or test setup, and rerunyarn loki test. - Review and commit the result. Include approved reference changes with the code change so reviewers can assess them together. Loki’s guide recommends checking reference files into Git; Git LFS is an optional way to store them.
Choose full approval or diff-only approval
The CLI’s approve command updates reference files from images generated in the last run and can prune outdated references. Use the default full approval only when you have reviewed the complete generated set and intend to replace the references it affects. The CLI option --diffOnly limits approval to files that failed the previous test run, which can narrow the scope when only failed captures should change. It does not decide whether a visual change is acceptable: inspect those failures first.

- A BETTER READING EXPERIENCE: For busy office workers, EasyRead mode provides a more paper-like experience for when viewing lengthy documents
The CLI documentation lists --reference with a default of ./.loki/reference, --output with a default of ./.loki/current, and --diffOnly defaulting to false. These are documented CLI defaults, not guarantees for every version or project configuration. Check the Loki CLI reference before relying on a path or flag.
Make baseline updates reviewable in CI
Keep the UI code change and its accepted screenshots in the same review where possible. That makes it easier to verify that a baseline change corresponds to the intended implementation rather than silently masking a regression.

For CI, Loki documents --requireReference, which fails a test when references are missing, alongside a static Storybook build-and-test pattern. Requiring existing references helps prevent a missing baseline from being silently treated as a normal update. Consult the Loki CI documentation and adapt its pattern to your pinned version and CI environment.
Pick a capture target that fits the stories
Use the capture target your project actually needs. Web stories may run with Docker Chrome, local Chrome, or Chrome in AWS Lambda; native stories may require the iOS simulator or Android emulator. Repeatability depends on running comparisons under a consistent, correctly configured environment, so investigate environment differences before approving a visual shift.

- Ultra-thin bezels: Maximize your viewing experience with thin bezels.
The Loki README lists Node 16 or later as a prerequisite. This is version-sensitive: verify the prerequisites for the Loki release your project uses rather than applying that README statement to every release.
Troubleshoot unexpected differences
- Many screenshots changed at once: Do not bulk-approve on that evidence alone. Check whether Storybook, browser, simulator, emulator, or other capture setup differs from the environment used for the references. Correct the environment or investigate the UI change, then rerun the test.
- A current screenshot is blank, incomplete, or missing content: Confirm Storybook and the required target are running and that the relevant story renders as expected. Fix the underlying setup or story issue; do not accept a faulty capture as a new reference.
- The difference image shows an intended redesign: Verify the new appearance against the change being reviewed, then approve the generated images and commit the updated references with the code.
- Only some captures should be replaced: Review failed captures individually and consider
--diffOnlyto limit approval to files that failed the prior test run. Confirm the option’s behavior for your Loki version in the CLI reference. - CI fails because references are missing: With
--requireReference, a missing baseline is an error to address explicitly. Generate and review the appropriate reference in the intended workflow, commit it, and rerun CI rather than weakening the check to conceal the omission.
Or skip the browser setup
If the task is to capture a website rather than maintain Loki’s story-based reference workflow, ScreenshotNeo offers a screenshot API and MCP server. Its API takes a URL in one GET request and can return an image or PDF. For example, this cURL request saves a WebP screenshot; see the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for setup and options.
