Run Windows Update before Lenovo System Update, or use Lenovo Vantage where supported. For a manual BIOS update, download the package for your exact model from Lenovo Support, read its README, connect reliable power, and let the update finish and restart without interruption.
How to Update Lenovo Drivers and BIOS Safely in Windows 11
The correct package and procedure depend on the Lenovo product. Lenovo warns that installing BIOS intended for another model may stop the system from working. Its general BIOS instructions were published on 1 April 2016 and last modified on 5 February 2026; follow the current instructions and README for your specific product rather than assuming one set of steps applies to every Lenovo computer. 1. Identify your Lenovo model before choosing updates
Find the exact product name or machine type before searching for drivers or firmware. On Lenovo Support, select the matching product, open Drivers & Software, and choose the component you need. For firmware, select BIOS/UEFI and the correct operating system, such as Windows 11. Do not rely on a similar model name: the package must list your system as supported.
Check the package details for its supported products and operating systems, version information, changes, and any limitations. Lenovo says the package README includes installation guidance and other package-specific information; read it before installing BIOS.

2. Choose a Lenovo update route
Lenovo describes three routes: Vantage, System Update on supported product families, or a manual download from the product’s support page. No single route is established as best for every Lenovo model. Choose one that supports your computer and presents the specific update you need; if the README requires a particular installation method, follow it.
| Route | What Lenovo says it can update | When to use it |
|---|---|---|
| Lenovo Vantage | Drivers and BIOS | Use when Vantage is available for your Lenovo product and offers the update you need. Lenovo’s general guide does not say it is available on every device. |
| Lenovo System Update | Lenovo drivers, BIOS, and applications | Supported product families listed in Lenovo’s guide include ThinkPad, ThinkCentre, ThinkStation, and Lenovo V, B, K, and E-Series systems. Lenovo recommends running Windows Update first. |
| Manual Lenovo Support download | The model-specific package selected on the product’s Drivers & Software page | Use to select and review an exact driver or BIOS/UEFI package and follow its README. |
Run Windows Update before Lenovo System Update, as Lenovo recommends. On the Lenovo product page, review the package’s supported model and Windows version before installing it. A listing may label a package Critical, Recommended, or Optional; interpret that label in the context of that particular product and package, not as a universal ranking for all Lenovo computers.

3. Prepare carefully before a BIOS update
- Read the exact BIOS package README and follow its instructions; download options and installation procedures can vary by system.
- Connect the computer to reliable power. Lenovo recommends a fully charged battery for laptops and other portable devices.
- If you need an AC adapter, use one compatible with your exact Lenovo model; the appropriate adapter cannot be specified without that model.
Lenovo warns: “If the system freezes, crashes, or loses power during the update process, the BIOS or UEFI firmware may be corrupted.” A corrupted firmware update can prevent the computer from starting.
4. Install the BIOS package and let it finish
- On Lenovo Support, open the product’s Drivers & Software page and select BIOS/UEFI and the correct operating system.
- Confirm that the package supports your exact model, review its details, and read the README.
- Start the package using the method specified in that README. Lenovo’s general Windows procedure describes running the BIOS package and allowing the flashing program to finish.
- Do not interrupt the flashing process. Lenovo says the computer reboots automatically when the update completes; allow it to restart.
Do not treat the general steps as a universal click-by-click procedure. The package README is the authority for that model’s installation method and precautions.
