How to Update iTunes on Windows 11: A Step-by-Step Guide

The right iTunes update method on Windows 11 depends on whether you installed it through Microsoft Store or downloaded it from Apple.

How you update iTunes on Windows 11 depends on where you installed it. For the Microsoft Store version, check the Store’s Library. For the version downloaded from Apple, use iTunes’ built-in update command. These routes are different, so start by identifying which version is on your PC.

First, identify how iTunes was installed

Apple documents two update routes: Microsoft Store for the Store installation, and iTunes’ own Help menu for the version downloaded from Apple. If you are unsure which one you have, try the steps for the Store first; if iTunes does not appear in your Store Library, use the Apple-download steps below. Apple describes both routes in its iTunes update guide.

Update the Microsoft Store version of iTunes

  1. Open Microsoft Store in Windows.
  2. Select Library in the sidebar.
  3. Look under Updates & downloads for iTunes and install an available update. You can also use the Store’s option to check for updates.

Apple says Store versions of its Windows apps download updates automatically, but you can check manually in the Library. Apple identifies Microsoft Store as the way to get the latest versions of its Windows apps, including iTunes, in its Windows software update guidance.

Update iTunes downloaded from Apple

  1. Open iTunes.
  2. Choose Help > Check for Updates.
  3. Follow any prompts shown to install an available update.

To turn on weekly checks, choose Edit > Preferences > Advanced, then select Check for new software updates automatically. Apple says this check occurs weekly after iTunes has been quit and reopened at least once during that seven-day period. If you do not reopen iTunes during that period, the weekly check may not occur.

If the update does not appear or install

  • Check the installation route. The Store Library applies to the Store version; Help > Check for Updates applies to the Apple-download version.
  • Confirm administrator access. Apple recommends making sure you are signed in with an administrator account when installing or updating.
  • Install available Windows updates. Restart Windows if prompted, then try the iTunes update again.
  • Check for conflicting software. Apple recommends looking for software that may interfere with installation. If security software appears to be causing the issue, treat that as a specific troubleshooting possibility rather than routinely disabling protection.
  • Restart the PC and retry the update.

For a Microsoft Store download or update problem, Apple directs users to Microsoft. For other iTunes installation problems, see Apple’s iTunes installation and update troubleshooting steps.

When Apple Software Update is relevant

Apple Software Update is not the normal update route to recommend for a Windows 11 PC. Apple says Windows 10 or later users can use Microsoft Store for the latest Apple apps; for those apps, Apple Software Update is no longer needed. It may still be relevant with certain older Apple app installations or Windows running on a Mac through Boot Camp. Apple identifies Boot Camp as an exception where both update methods may be needed. See Apple’s guidance on updating Apple software for Windows.

Updating iTunes is not the same as updating an iPhone or iPad

The steps above update the iTunes application on your PC. They do not update iOS or iPadOS on a connected device. Apple’s separate Apple Devices app for Windows can be used to manage Apple devices, including updating, backing up, restoring, and syncing them.

If your goal is to manage media rather than update iTunes, Apple lists Apple Music and Apple TV as dedicated Windows apps and says iTunes remains for podcasts and audiobooks on Windows. Availability and feature support can vary by country or region; consult Apple’s Windows app download and availability page.
