Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsUpdating iOS does not normally erase WhatsApp chats, but the safest preparation is to confirm a recent WhatsApp iCloud chat backup before you start. On your iPhone, open WhatsApp > Settings > Chats > Chat Backup, check the last-backup time and size, then tap Back Up Now and wait for it to finish. Keep access to the same Apple Account, iCloud Drive, and phone number used for that backup. If WhatsApp end-to-end encrypted backup is on, you will also need its password or 64-digit key to restore it.
What to check before updating iOS
Your WhatsApp chat backup is the directly relevant way to restore chat history. Do not assume that an iPhone iCloud or computer backup means WhatsApp’s separate chat backup has completed. WhatsApp’s chat restore instructions require the same phone number and Apple Account used to create the backup, and adequate storage on both iCloud and the iPhone.

- Confirm your chats are currently accessible. If they are, leave WhatsApp installed while you prepare your backups.
- Check and run a WhatsApp backup. Open WhatsApp > Settings > Chats > Chat Backup. Check the displayed date and time, then tap Back Up Now. Wait until the backup completes; a scheduled backup is not proof that the most recent run succeeded.
- Check storage and iCloud access. Make sure you can use the same Apple Account and iCloud Drive later, and that WhatsApp is enabled among the apps using iCloud Drive. WhatsApp’s backup troubleshooting guidance says available iCloud storage should be at least 2.05 times the WhatsApp backup size. This is WhatsApp’s stated troubleshooting threshold, not a general Apple storage rule. Your iPhone also needs enough free space.
- Keep the backup connection stable. WhatsApp identifies unstable Wi-Fi and interruptions as possible reasons a backup may not complete. Keep the iPhone powered and connected to reliable Wi-Fi until it finishes.
- Save encrypted-backup credentials. If you enabled end-to-end encrypted backups, confirm you can retrieve the password or 64-digit key. WhatsApp says neither it nor the backup service provider can read a properly encrypted backup or access its unlocking key; losing your credential can therefore prevent restoration. See WhatsApp’s encrypted-backup explanation.
- Optionally make a separate iPhone backup. This is an additional, broader device-level safeguard—not a substitute for checking WhatsApp’s chat backup.
Optional iCloud device backup
For a manual Apple iCloud backup, open Settings > [your name] > iCloud > iCloud Backup > Back Up Now and stay on Wi-Fi until it completes. Apple’s iCloud backup instructions, published September 24, 2026, explain how to check the last backup time.

Optional computer backup
On a Mac, connect the iPhone, select it in Finder, open General, choose Back Up Now, and wait for the process to finish. On Windows, use the Apple Devices app to select the iPhone and start a backup. Apple also supports encrypting a computer backup. If you enable encryption, record its password: Apple says an encrypted backup cannot be restored without it. See Apple’s computer backup instructions.

Update iOS after the backup finishes
Use the update option presented on your iPhone, following the prompts for your model and installed iOS version. The exact on-device screens and available choices can vary. If updating through a Mac, Apple’s documented Finder route is to connect the iPhone, select it in Finder, open General, choose Check for Update, then select Update. Apple’s Finder update instructions describe that process.
What each backup protects
| Backup | What it is for | What you need to restore |
|---|---|---|
| WhatsApp iCloud chat backup | WhatsApp chat history; videos are included only if Include Videos was enabled before that backup. | The same phone number and Apple Account, iCloud Drive access, enough iCloud and iPhone storage, and the encrypted-backup password or key if encryption is enabled. WhatsApp’s restore guidance covers the requirements. |
| Apple iCloud device backup | A broader copy of iPhone information for use when replacing, losing, or restoring a device. | Access to the relevant Apple Account and the iPhone setup restore flow. See Apple’s iCloud backup guidance. |
| Encrypted computer backup | A local, broader iPhone backup stored on a Mac or Windows computer. | Access to the computer backup and its encryption password. Apple says a forgotten password makes previous encrypted backups unusable. See Apple’s computer-backup instructions. |
If WhatsApp chats are missing after the update
First allow WhatsApp time to load or finish any restoration already in progress; keep the iPhone on Wi-Fi. If the chats do not return and you need to restore the WhatsApp iCloud chat backup, restoration is offered during WhatsApp’s initial setup:

- Always Fast: No slowdowns for large file transfers. With SLC caching (25% of current available capacity allocated as high-speed cache), this external SSD delivers steady 10Gbps for transfers within the cache capacity
- Confirm that you have a usable backup and can access its Apple Account, phone number, and any required encryption credential.
- Uninstall and reinstall WhatsApp.
- Set it up with the same phone number and Apple Account used for the backup.
- When prompted during setup, tap Restore Chat History and allow the process to complete.
Do not uninstall WhatsApp while the original chats remain accessible unless you have confirmed a usable backup and understand that restoration takes place during setup. WhatsApp’s restore instructions state that messages sent or received after the latest backup cannot be restored from that backup.
If restoration does not appear or fails
- Check that the phone number and Apple Account match those used for the WhatsApp backup.
- Confirm iCloud Drive is available and WhatsApp is enabled to use it.
- Check free space on both iCloud and the iPhone, and retry with a stable connection.
- If the backup is end-to-end encrypted, verify that you have the correct password or 64-digit key.
- Do not delete the WhatsApp backup casually: it may be the only current recovery copy. WhatsApp also advises trying other options before signing out of iCloud, because doing so can affect other apps. See its backup troubleshooting guidance.
Restoring an Apple device backup instead
If you made a separate Apple device backup, Apple documents restoring an iPhone from iCloud during setup or from a computer using Finder or Apple Devices. Restoring the whole iPhone is a broader operation than restoring WhatsApp chat history; follow Apple’s restore instructions and choose the intended backup. An encrypted computer backup requires its password.

What a backup cannot bring back
- A WhatsApp restore reflects the state captured by the latest successful chat backup. WhatsApp says, “Any messages sent and received after the latest backup can’t be restored.” See How to restore your chat history.
- Videos are restored only if Include Videos was enabled before the backup was made.
- WhatsApp says it does not store chat history on its servers for restoration on a user’s behalf; recovery must come from a backup or a supported transfer process.
- A backup that is incomplete or corrupted may not restore successfully. A backup reduces risk, but it cannot guarantee recovery of messages it did not capture.
