Teachers cannot reliably prove who wrote a homework submission from its style alone. When work raises a concern, review the student’s process and sources, ask them to explain their reasoning, and compare the submission with their demonstrated learning. Treat unusual clues as reasons for a fair follow-up—not as proof—and use the school’s policy to guide any decision.
Why AI detectors are not a reliable verdict
Detector results can be wrong in both directions: they may flag human writing or miss AI-assisted work. Chicago Public Schools warns that some systems may disproportionately flag English Learners. OpenAI says its detector research did not establish sufficient reliability for cases with potentially lasting consequences; it also notes that small edits can evade detection and that concise or formulaic writing may be misclassified. OpenAI’s educator guidance and Chicago Public Schools’ instructional guidance both favor a broader review of student work.

Australia’s Tertiary Education Quality and Standards Agency (TEQSA) says a detector score alone is insufficient to allege misconduct. A score is not the probability that a particular assignment was AI-generated; performance may also be less reliable for short documents or text edited by a person or mixed with AI output. TEQSA’s example of a 1% false-positive rate is a hypothetical illustration, not a measured rate for any current product. Read TEQSA’s guidance on AI text and take-home assessments.
A score can at most be one prompt to ask questions. It cannot establish intent, identify exactly how a student used a tool, or replace the school’s academic-integrity process.

Set clear expectations before students begin
Tell students what AI use is allowed for each assignment, what is not allowed, and how they should disclose permitted assistance. Explain what evidence of their own reasoning they should keep, such as notes, drafts, or source records. Rules need to be specific enough that students can distinguish brainstorming or editing from having a tool produce work they are expected to do themselves.
School and jurisdiction policies differ. Fairfax County Public Schools advises teachers to clarify when AI is permitted and how students should demonstrate their thinking or cite AI use. Ofqual’s 2026 resources for schools encourage consistent institutional messaging. Follow the rules that apply at your school rather than assuming that another district’s or country’s policy governs your classroom. Fairfax County Public Schools’ faculty guidance and Ofqual’s AI-in-coursework resources offer examples.

Build proportionate process checkpoints into substantial work
For a longer or higher-stakes assignment, ask students to show a few stages of development rather than producing a large paperwork trail. Depending on the task, useful checkpoints might include:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute- A proposed question, topic, or claim.
- Source notes or an annotated list of evidence.
- An outline or early draft.
- A brief reflection on what changed and why.
Checkpoints can support feedback as well as make the learning process visible. College Board’s AP Capstone guidance describes teacher checkpoints, conversations, and process portfolios; Oregon’s K–12 guidance encourages discussion of the writing process and submission of outlines and drafts. Adjust the amount of documentation to the student’s age, assignment length, learning goal, and teacher workload. College Board’s guidance for AI tools and other services and Oregon Department of Education’s classroom guidance describe approaches.

Use a calm conversation to understand the work
Start with curiosity rather than accusation. Ask questions tied to the assignment and the student’s decisions, not questions designed to force a confession. For example:
- “Can you walk me through how you arrived at this main idea?”
- “Why did you choose this source, and how did it shape your conclusion?”
- “What changed between your outline and this version?”
- “Which part was most difficult, and how did you work through it?”
Fairfax County Public Schools recommends inviting students to explain their thinking, describe their process, share drafts, or discuss how they approached the work. A conversation may reveal what the student understands and where they need help; it is not, by itself, a definitive authorship test.

Review the submission alongside available evidence
Look at the work with the student, connecting its claims to their notes, drafts, explanation, and cited sources. Check that sources exist and support the claims attributed to them. If AI use was allowed, ask what the student used and how they checked, revised, or incorporated its output. OpenAI’s educator guidance describes student-shared AI conversations as one possible way to discuss the quality of questions, critical thinking, fact-checking, and integration of information.
Do not assume every student used a particular tool or demand access to a private account. Any request to share records, and any decision to retain them, must comply with applicable school privacy rules. Evidence of a student’s understanding is also not identical to evidence of whether a tool was used: the assignment rules determine whether a particular use was permitted.

Investigate anomalies without treating them as proof
A sudden change in voice, a weak explanation of an argument, an unverifiable citation, or a large gap between stages of work can justify a follow-up. None establishes AI use on its own. Consider ordinary explanations such as tutoring, permitted editing, feedback from another person, a new topic, or additional time spent revising. Compare the work with the student’s learning in context, not just with a single earlier sample.
Informal style comparisons can be unfair, too. A student’s writing may change with the subject, support received, language background, or time spent revising. Treating a mismatch as a conclusion risks mistaking variation in learning for misconduct.
Choose evidence practices that fit the learning goal
Not every assignment needs the same level of verification. TEQSA describes a two-lane approach: some assessments can be designed as more secure demonstrations of learning, while others remain open learning activities where students can experiment and receive feedback. The choice depends on what the assignment is meant to show, not on a universal need to document every step.
- For practice and feedback: prioritize useful comments, reflection, and visible progress; keep process documentation light.
- For a key learning outcome: consider checkpoints or a conversation that lets students explain decisions and demonstrate understanding.
- For fairness and accessibility: avoid making a detector score or expected writing style the standard, particularly when language background or disability may affect how work appears.
- For privacy and workload: request only evidence relevant to the assignment and permitted by school rules; scale checkpoints to the task.
Follow school policy if concerns remain
If the conversation and review leave a concern unresolved, document the specific evidence and follow the school’s stated academic-integrity process. Do not infer a breach solely from a software score or a change in writing style. The steps and possible consequences depend on local policy; TEQSA, Ofqual, and district guidance do not create one universal rule for every school. TEQSA’s guidance emphasizes that a detector score alone cannot support an allegation, while Ofqual’s school resources address clear institutional approaches and discussion with students.
