Before installing a new PC game, identify the graphics card in your PC, download a driver that matches that hardware and your operating system from the GPU maker or computer manufacturer, install it, then verify the installed version. A driver update can help ensure the game sees a supported driver, but it is not a guaranteed performance fix or a requirement for every game.
1. Identify your graphics card and PC model
- In Windows, right-click Start, choose Device Manager, and expand Display adapters. Note the graphics adapter name.
- If you use a laptop or prebuilt desktop, also note the exact computer model. Its manufacturer may provide a customized graphics-driver package.
If more than one adapter appears, such as integrated graphics and a separate graphics card, note each one. Check the game publisher’s system requirements to see which GPU the game expects.

2. Choose the right official driver source
Use the GPU maker’s official driver page or the support page for your computer model. Match the selected driver to the exact GPU and supported Windows version. Avoid third-party driver-download sites.
- NVIDIA: NVIDIA’s manual installation guidance uses the Game Ready driver package for the graphics card. Follow the NVIDIA driver installation instructions.
- AMD Radeon: AMD offers automatic detection or manual product selection in its Radeon Software installation instructions.
- Intel graphics: Check the computer manufacturer first if your PC may use a customized driver, or use Intel’s Windows 10 and Windows 11 graphics-driver installation guide.
For laptops and prebuilt systems, the computer manufacturer’s package is often the safest starting point. Intel specifically advises checking the PC maker for customized drivers; if you choose a GPU-vendor package instead, confirm that it supports your exact hardware and operating system.

3. Select a release and installation type
AMD Recommended or Optional
AMD describes Recommended releases as internally quality-assessed and WHQL-certified. Optional releases provide the latest support for new game titles and graphics products between Recommended releases. Choose according to your needs rather than assuming one channel is always best; AMD explains the distinction in its driver information and update guide.
Standard update or clean install
A standard update is appropriate for routine updating. A clean install is a separate option used in certain vendor workflows or when troubleshooting a corrupted installation; it removes existing driver components and may reset settings. Intel notes that its clean-install process also resets Intel graphics settings and clears the shader cache in its clean installation instructions. Do not select a clean install automatically for every update.

4. Download and install the driver
- Download the compatible package from the official source you selected. Save any open work before starting the installer.
- Close applications and follow the installer’s prompts. NVIDIA warns that Windows Update activity or open applications can interfere with its manual installation procedure.
- Choose a clean-install option only if the vendor’s instructions call for it or you are troubleshooting an installation issue.
- Restart Windows if the installer requests it. NVIDIA’s manual clean-install procedure specifically requires a reboot to finalize installation.
5. Verify the driver before installing the game
Check the version shown in the GPU maker’s software or in Device Manager, then compare it with the package you intended to install. Intel recommends comparing the full seven-digit build number for its current version scheme; see its driver version-number guide. AMD Radeon Settings displays the installed version and includes an update check.

Verification matters because Windows Update may interfere with or revert a vendor driver in some installation scenarios. If the version does not match, use the GPU maker’s or computer manufacturer’s supported troubleshooting instructions rather than installing unrelated driver utilities.

6. Install the game and handle problems sensibly
Once the compatible driver is installed and verified, proceed with the game installation. Follow the game publisher’s own hardware and driver requirements: updating graphics drivers is not a universal prerequisite, and the available guidance does not establish a guaranteed performance improvement for every game.
If the update causes a display or stability problem, use the vendor’s supported troubleshooting or rollback guidance. Avoid repeatedly installing packages for different devices or using third-party tools to replace the driver.
