You generally can’t update a graphics driver in a way that prevents every game from compiling shaders again. A driver update can change the environment used to compile shaders, so a game may need to rebuild cached results. The practical goal is to let that work finish before you play—and, on supported NVIDIA systems, use its beta Auto Shader Compilation feature to rebuild DirectX 12 shaders while the PC is idle or on demand.
Why a graphics driver update can trigger shader compilation
Games and graphics drivers work together to translate shader code for the GPU. When a driver changes, previously cached shader outputs may no longer be suitable, so a game can compile shaders again. NVIDIA notes that modern games may repeat shader translation after GPU driver updates. This is expected behavior, not proof that the update failed. NVIDIA’s feature announcement describes the driver-update workflow.

Direct3D supports driver-mediated shader caching: Windows and the driver can keep data in memory and on disk to speed later runs, but cache support is not a universal setting that guarantees shaders will never be rebuilt. Microsoft’s Direct3D 12 pipeline state cache documentation explains the platform’s caching model.

Update the driver, then let the game rebuild shaders
- Identify your GPU and operating system. Check Windows’ display adapter information or the PC maker’s specifications so you select a driver for the correct hardware.
- Get the driver from the GPU vendor’s official software or support channel. Use the current driver offered for your exact GPU and Windows version. Installation screens and steps vary by vendor and product, so follow the vendor’s instructions rather than a generic menu sequence.
- Restart if the installer requests it. This allows the updated driver to load fully.
- Open the affected game and allow any shader-compilation stage to finish. If the game compiles shaders during startup or before gameplay, avoid interrupting that process. Where supported, do this before a performance-critical session.
- Check behavior on a later run. Once the game has rebuilt what it needs, later launches may benefit from the cache. A further driver change, game update, or game-specific cache behavior can cause another rebuild.
NVIDIA Auto Shader Compilation: a way to reduce post-update waiting
NVIDIA announced Auto Shader Compilation on March 31, 2026, as a beta feature for supported DirectX 12 games. NVIDIA says it can rebuild game shaders after a driver update while the system is idle or on demand; its announcement names a “Compile Now” action. To check for it, open NVIDIA app > Graphics > Global Settings > Shader Cache and look for Auto Shader Compilation. App labels and navigation can change, and the option may not appear on every system.

NVIDIA states the feature requires GeForce Game Ready Driver 595.97 WHQL or newer. That requirement is specific to NVIDIA’s feature, not a general requirement for updating graphics drivers. The feature is a mitigation, not a guarantee against all compilation: NVIDIA says a game still generates shaders in-game on first installation. See NVIDIA’s announcement for its stated requirements and behavior.
How Advanced Shader Delivery differs
Advanced Shader Delivery is a separate, conditional approach: compatible platform and storefront arrangements can deliver precompiled shaders before a game download completes, rather than relying only on a driver or app to rebuild shaders after a driver change. Microsoft describes it as requiring compatible Windows software, GPU and driver support, and a participating storefront; it is not a universal Windows switch. Microsoft’s Advanced Shader Delivery overview explains the compatibility-dependent model.

| Approach | When compilation happens | Compatibility and limits |
|---|---|---|
| NVIDIA Auto Shader Compilation | After a driver update, while the system is idle or when requested through the announced “Compile Now” action. | Beta; NVIDIA specifies GeForce Game Ready Driver 595.97 WHQL or newer and support for DirectX 12 games. First installation still involves in-game shader generation. NVIDIA |
| Advanced Shader Delivery | Precompiled shaders may be delivered before the game download finishes. | Requires compatible Windows, GPU/driver, and storefront support; availability is not universal. Microsoft |
What to do if compilation keeps recurring or a game has problems
- Check the game’s official support information. A game may rebuild its own cache after an update or under conditions specific to that title.
- Read the exact driver release notes for your GPU vendor and version. Driver-specific problems do occur. For example, AMD documented a historical shader-cache failure involving accented Windows usernames; that is evidence of a specific past issue, not a general diagnosis for current systems. AMD’s March 2022 release notes describe the case.
- Don’t clear shader caches as routine prevention. Clearing cached data removes material that may otherwise avoid rebuilding; the cited platform and vendor documentation does not recommend cache clearing to prevent recompilation.
- Consider a rollback only when the problem began with a specific driver and the vendor or game guidance supports it. Use the vendor’s official instructions and avoid assuming that an older driver is always better.
This guidance concerns Windows PC gaming and the documented DirectX-related features above. The cited information does not establish one universal procedure for Linux, macOS, Intel graphics, or every game and graphics API.
