How to Update Device Drivers and Firmware Safely

Use Windows Update for most Windows drivers, download manual packages only from the device maker, and follow exact model-specific instructions for firmware.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For most Windows devices, start with Windows Update; for a Mac, use macOS Software Update. If you need a driver for a specific device, get it from that device’s manufacturer and match it to your Windows version and system architecture. Firmware is different: follow the exact instructions for your computer or device, because prerequisites and update order can vary. If an update causes problems, use the appropriate rollback or recovery guidance rather than trying unrelated fixes.

Drivers and firmware are different updates

A device driver is software that lets Windows communicate with a component or accessory, such as a graphics adapter, printer, or network device. Firmware is software stored on the device itself. It can control how that hardware starts and operates, and updating it may involve steps that differ substantially from installing a Windows driver.

That distinction matters for safety. Windows provides routine ways to find and recover from many driver updates. Firmware, by contrast, may have model-specific prerequisites or a required order of operations. Do not assume that a procedure for one device or a particular security issue applies to another.

Use the computer maker’s instructions for built-in components when appropriate, and the device maker’s instructions for separately supplied hardware. The exact model and hardware revision matter: an update intended for a similar-looking device may not be suitable for yours.

Update Windows drivers through Windows Update first

For most Windows hardware, Windows Update is the appropriate first stop. It is Microsoft’s recommended way to obtain driver updates, and it avoids the risk of choosing an unrelated package from an unofficial download site. Windows Update may also ask you to restart to finish applying an update, so save your work and choose a restart time when interruption is acceptable.

  1. Open Settings and select Windows Update.
  2. Check for available updates and let Windows install the updates it offers for your device.
  3. If Windows asks for a restart, save open work and restart when you can tolerate the interruption.
  4. After the computer returns to Windows, check whether the original device problem has changed.

For a driver-specific issue, Windows Update may identify the publisher and version of an offered driver. Treat those details as identification, not as a simple ranking of which driver is newest or best. Microsoft explains that the driver provider chooses the descriptive date, while Windows uses targeting information in driver files when deciding what to install. A date that looks old by itself does not prove Windows selected an inferior driver.

Find a device and use Device Manager when needed

If the issue remains or you have a reason to target a particular device, identify it in Device Manager before installing anything. This helps prevent a common mistake: downloading a package for a product family or component that is not the one actually installed.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open Device Manager from the Windows Start menu search.
  2. Expand the relevant device category and locate the device. If you are unsure which entry is involved, check the device name and its properties before proceeding.
  3. Right-click the device and choose Update driver.
  4. Choose Search automatically for drivers to let Windows search for an available driver. If Windows directs you to Windows Update, use that route.
  5. Restart only if Windows or the device’s official instructions require it, then check whether the device works as intended.

Device Manager’s automatic search is not a guarantee that a newer or better-matching driver exists. If it reports that the best driver is already installed but a known problem remains, check the manufacturer’s official support information for the exact model and Windows release before deciding whether to install a package manually.

Install a driver package from the device maker

A manual driver can make sense when the manufacturer provides one for a known compatibility issue, a particular Windows release, or a device that Windows Update has not resolved. The trade-off is that you must do the matching yourself. Microsoft advises users to avoid driver downloads from sites other than the manufacturer’s official site.

  1. Identify the exact computer or device model. For a component, use the computer manufacturer’s support page if that is where the component’s supported driver is provided.
  2. On the manufacturer’s official support site, select the correct Windows version or release and system architecture. Do not rely on a similar model name or a package intended for a different Windows version.
  3. Read the package’s own notes and requirements. If the manufacturer specifies a sequence or prerequisite, follow that instruction rather than assuming it is interchangeable with another update process.
  4. Download the package from the official page and use the manufacturer’s installation instructions.
  5. If the package is supplied as driver files rather than an installer, open Device Manager, right-click the matching device, choose Update driver, then select Browse my computer for drivers and point Windows to the folder containing the correct files.
  6. Complete any restart requested by Windows or the manufacturer, then verify the specific device or function that prompted the update.

Do not install several unrelated drivers in one batch just because they are offered by a download page or utility. Target the device you are troubleshooting and keep track of what changed. That makes it easier to identify the cause and use Device Manager’s rollback option if the update introduces a problem.

Recover if a Windows driver update causes trouble

Try Roll Back Driver first

If a device stopped working or became less reliable immediately after a driver update, Device Manager may offer a way back to the previous driver.

  3. Select Roll Back Driver if the option is available, then follow the prompts.
  4. Restart if Windows requests it and test the affected device again.

The rollback control may not be available for every device or update. Microsoft says reinstalling the previous driver often resolves problems that began after a Windows Update; if rollback is unavailable, use the device maker’s official support instructions or the Windows reinstall route below.

Reinstall a device driver when rollback is unavailable

Microsoft also documents uninstalling a device driver so Windows can attempt to reinstall it. Save your work and close apps before doing this. Some devices may require you to reinstall their driver manually, so check the manufacturer’s instructions if the device is essential or its package is not readily available.

  1. Save open work and close applications.
  2. In Device Manager, locate the affected device and use the available uninstall-device or uninstall-driver action.
  3. Restart Windows so it can attempt to reinstall the device driver.
  4. Check the device. If Windows does not restore a working driver, install the appropriate package from the manufacturer’s official support page.

Do not treat this as a universal repair for every malfunction. It is a documented recovery path for a driver problem; it does not replace the specific troubleshooting instructions for a device that has a separate hardware or firmware issue.

Update Mac firmware through macOS

Apple says Mac firmware updates are included in macOS updates. For a Mac, check the built-in update screen rather than looking for a generic firmware installer:

  1. Open the Apple menu and select System Settings.
  2. Choose General, then Software Update.
  3. Review and install the macOS update offered for the Mac, following the on-screen instructions.

This is Apple’s guidance for Mac firmware; it is not a universal procedure for Windows PCs, peripherals, or other platforms. For a separately supplied accessory, use that accessory maker’s official instructions rather than assuming the Mac update process covers it.

Handle firmware updates according to their exact instructions

There is no single safe order for all firmware updates. Start with the official support instructions for the exact computer or device, and check the model, hardware revision, prerequisites, and any required ordering before acting. The available evidence does not establish one universal list of precautions—such as power conditions or recovery steps—that applies to every product. Use the exact update’s instructions for those details.

TPM firmware can have a required order

Microsoft’s guidance for a particular TPM security issue is a concrete example of why the sequence matters: for that issue, it instructs users to apply the Windows operating-system updates before the TPM firmware update. The same instructions may include clearing the TPM, but that is not a routine step for every firmware update.

Before clearing a TPM under the applicable instructions, back up your data. Do not clear the TPM on a work or school device unless your IT department instructs you to do so. Microsoft warns that after clearing it, Windows Hello sign-in must be set up again. Follow the TPM guidance only when it applies to your issue and device; do not transfer its sequence or clearing step to unrelated firmware.

Secure Boot servicing is a coordinated process

Secure Boot certificate updates involve both Windows and UEFI firmware. Microsoft describes Windows as scheduling, ordering, logging, and retrying update actions, while the firmware must support preserving and validating the relevant databases. A firmware limitation can stall servicing; in documented failure scenarios, it can contribute to boot problems. Microsoft says an OEM firmware update may be needed when troubleshooting identifies such a limitation.

The detailed Secure Boot troubleshooting material is aimed at administrators and support professionals, not routine consumer maintenance. If a Secure Boot update stalls or the computer has a boot problem, use the computer maker’s guidance or an administrator’s support process rather than attempting low-level remediation based on a generic checklist.

Recovery media is conditional, not routine

Microsoft documents a specific Secure Boot recovery case in which its recovery utility is placed on a FAT32-formatted USB drive. That supports using a USB drive for that particular recovery procedure when its instructions call for one. It does not mean a USB drive is required for ordinary driver updates or for every firmware update.

Windows version support affects update expectations

Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025. Microsoft says that after this date it no longer provides the ordinary free Windows Update software updates, technical assistance, or security fixes for Windows 10. As of October 2026, a Windows 10 computer should not be described as receiving that ordinary free support stream. This lifecycle point is separate from whether a device maker still lists a driver for a particular machine.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Microsoft’s driver guidance referenced here applies to Windows 11 versions 24H2 and 25H2 and Windows Server 2025, and was originally published October 20, 2025. Check current support information for the Windows edition and release you actually use; do not assume instructions for those versions describe every older or newer release in every detail.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Choosing a driver by date alone: the displayed date is not a reliable standalone measure of driver quality or Windows targeting.
  • Using a third-party driver download site: Microsoft advises using the device manufacturer’s official site for manual downloads.
  • Ignoring Windows version or architecture: a package for a different release or system architecture may not match your installation.
  • Applying a firmware sequence to another device: the TPM example’s Windows-before-firmware order is tied to a specific issue, not a universal rule.
  • Clearing a work or school TPM without approval: Microsoft explicitly cautions against doing so without IT instruction.
  • Assuming a USB drive is always needed: the FAT32 requirement belongs to a documented Secure Boot recovery case, not routine updating.
  • Scheduling a disruptive restart at the wrong time: Windows Update may request a restart, so save work and plan around interruption.

A safe decision checklist

  • Is this a driver update or firmware update? Choose the matching procedure.
  • For a routine Windows driver, have you checked Windows Update first?
  • For a manual package, does the official manufacturer page match the exact device, Windows release, and architecture?
  • For firmware, have you checked the exact model’s instructions and any stated prerequisites or ordering?
  • Could the process interrupt work or sign-in? Save work, plan a suitable time, and heed any device-specific warning.
  • If the update causes trouble, is there a documented rollback or recovery route for this specific update?
