First distinguish two tasks: updating the DSU utility package and using DSU to apply updates to a Dell server. Confirm Dell supports your exact server and Linux release, install or update DSU using Dell’s current instructions for that environment, and inspect proposed changes with dsu --preview before applying anything. The commands and package steps vary by source and system; there is no single verified upgrade command for every Linux distribution.
Confirm your server, Linux release, and DSU support
Before changing packages, record the Dell server model or PowerEdge generation, the Linux distribution and release, and whether DSU will run on the server itself or be used through remote management. Check Dell’s current documentation and repository for that specific combination. The available Dell documentation includes the DSU 2.1.2.0 guide, but that does not establish that 2.1.2.0 is the latest release today or that its historical support list applies to your host.

Dell describes DSU as a deployment tool for identifying, selecting, and applying Dell application, firmware, and driver updates. It supports online and offline sources. Updating DSU itself installs or upgrades that utility; applying updates through DSU changes selected server components. Treat those as separate operations.
Check prerequisites and choose a source
DSU requires administrative privileges and dependent operating-system libraries. For remote Linux administration, SSH must be enabled; that is not a prerequisite for running DSU locally. Remote iDRAC operations have separate requirements, so consult Dell’s instructions for the particular remote workflow rather than assuming local Linux setup covers them.

- Online: Use Dell’s current repository and package instructions for your supported distribution. The host needs access to the required source.
- Offline: Follow Dell’s supported offline package and repository workflow for the target system. Confirm how the package and catalog are obtained and made available to the host.
Dell documents online and offline Linux installation, including RHEL, SLES, and Ubuntu, in its DSU installation guidance. Follow the current instructions for your distribution rather than copying an old bootstrap command: repository URLs, package-manager steps, and signing requirements may change.
Dell states that FIPS mode is not supported by DSU 2.1.2.0. If the target system uses FIPS mode, verify current Dell guidance before proceeding; do not assume that a later release has changed this limitation without checking its documentation.

Update the DSU utility package
Use Dell’s current package instructions for your distribution to install or upgrade DSU. The documented Linux installation options and package details depend on the distribution and whether the source is online or offline. The cited documentation does not establish one universal package-manager upgrade command for every Linux version, so avoid substituting a guessed command or an old repository URL.

Inspect proposed server updates before applying them
Inventory the system and use DSU’s preview feature to see which updates are applicable. Dell documents dsu --preview for listing applicable updates. Review the proposed components and the configured source or catalog before proceeding; a preview is not a guarantee that every update will install successfully.
dsu --preview
DSU also documents update operations such as dsu --apply-upgrades. Repository or catalog selection and other options may be required for a particular environment, so use the relevant Dell procedure rather than treating this as a universal, ready-to-run command.

Apply only the intended updates and verify the result
- Confirm the preview lists updates appropriate for this server and that its source or catalog is the one you intend to use.
- Apply the selected update set using the options documented for your configured source and environment.
- Review DSU’s output for errors or unmet requirements, then check inventory or compliance again to see the resulting system state.
- For operational requirements such as rebooting or downtime, follow the documentation for each selected component. The available DSU guidance does not establish a universal reboot rule, downtime estimate, rollback guarantee, or backup behavior.
Do not bypass signature verification as a routine workaround. The guide documents an option to ignore signatures, but that is not a general safety recommendation. Resolve source, signing, or package-validation problems using Dell’s instructions for the actual repository or offline workflow.
Choose local or remote operation deliberately
| Workflow | What to check |
|---|---|
| Local, online | Supported server and Linux release, administrative privileges, required libraries, network access, and Dell’s current repository instructions. |
| Local, offline | Supported server and Linux release, administrative privileges, required libraries, and Dell’s supported offline package and repository workflow. |
| Remote Linux | All applicable host and source requirements, plus SSH access for remote Linux administration. |
| Remote iDRAC | Requirements for the specific iDRAC operation; these are separate from local DSU prerequisites. |
For the repository location, consult Dell’s DSU Linux repository alongside current documentation for your host. A repository listing or older guide alone should not be taken as proof that a particular package is the latest or supported for your system.
