An authorized IT administrator can use a device management system to request a remote lock, remove work data, or reset an enrolled device. Which action is available—and whether it affects only company data or the whole device—depends on the device’s enrollment, operating system, and management provider. A command may also remain pending until the device reconnects.
What remote lock, retire, and wipe actually do
These commands have different effects. Microsoft Intune documents the following actions; names and behavior can vary among management providers.

A remote wipe should not be described as forensic-grade destruction. It is a management command whose completion depends on the device receiving and carrying out the action.
Why enrollment determines what IT can control
Management begins with enrollment: the device or a work area on it is registered with an organization’s management provider. The enrollment model shapes which actions are available and what data they can reach.

Personal devices with an Android Work Profile
Android Work Profile separates work apps and data from personal apps and data. Google says an enterprise mobility management (EMM) provider can remotely lock or wipe the Work Profile. That separation is designed to keep personal use distinct, but the precise command and its scope depend on the enrollment and provider configuration. Google Android: What is a work profile?
Company-owned and dedicated Android devices
Company-owned devices can use management modes with broader device control; dedicated devices are configured for specific organizational purposes. These are not interchangeable with a personal device’s Work Profile. Administrators should check the exact enrollment mode and available actions rather than assume that every managed Android device supports the same controls. Android Management API: Provision a device

Lost Mode on supported Android devices
Google’s Android Enterprise Lost Mode can lock supported company-owned Android devices, block access beyond the lock screen, display an administrator message, and report location to the EMM after activation conditions are met. Google lists support for Work Profile on company-owned Android 13 or later and fully managed Android 11 or later. A remote action is sent through the management service to an enrolled device. In Intune, an action takes effect immediately when the device is online; if it is offline, the action takes effect at its next check-in. The administrator can review the action status in the admin center. A sent or queued command is therefore not proof that the device has already locked or erased. Microsoft Intune: Remote actions

Do not assume a device that is powered off or disconnected has received a command. Check the provider’s reported status and the device’s next check-in before telling someone that it is secured or wiped.

- Use a lock when the immediate goal is to block access while preserving data. For Intune, confirm that a PIN or passcode is already configured; remote lock is not a substitute for a screen-lock policy.
- Use retire or work-profile removal when the goal is to remove company information while preserving personal use, provided the enrollment and provider support that scope.
- Use a full wipe when the organization intends to reset the entire device, such as in some loss, theft, or decommissioning situations. Confirm that removing personal data as well as company data is acceptable before issuing it.
- Use Lost Mode only where supported when a compatible, company-owned Android device needs the documented lock-and-location behavior. Check the Android version, enrollment, EMM implementation, and activation conditions.
What administrators and employees should confirm
- Ownership and enrollment: Is the device personal, company-owned, or dedicated? Is management applied to the whole device or a work profile?
- Action scope: Does the selected command remove only organizational data, or reset the entire device?
- Platform support: Does the operating-system version and enrollment mode support the intended action? Product capabilities differ, and the examples here do not establish behavior for every vendor or platform.
- Delivery and status: Is the device online, and does the management console report the action as completed rather than pending?
- Recovery and reuse: A full factory reset removes data, apps, and configurations. Consider its impact before using it on a device that may be recovered or still contains personal information.
On an employee-owned device, the enrollment and configured management boundary matter. Android Work Profile is designed to separate organizational and personal data, but no single description applies to every bring-your-own-device setup. Confirm the actual policy and provider behavior before promising what IT can or cannot erase.
