The safest update method is the one your operating system can track and undo: update the distribution package on Linux, install a separate user-managed build on macOS, and use a verified archive or dependency manager on Windows without replacing the system copy. Then verify both the curl executable and the libcurl library that your application actually loads.
curl and libcurl are different things
curl is the command-line program. libcurl is the library that applications link to or load at runtime. They are often delivered by the same operating-system package set, but they can be installed, upgraded and selected independently.

- Updating the command-line tool: changes what runs when you type
curlin a shell. - Updating the library: changes the code used by a compiled application, language binding or service.
- Changing one does not guarantee the other changed: your shell may find a new executable while an application still loads an older shared library from another directory.
A safe change therefore has four parts: identify the current executable and library, install the new version without destroying the old one, verify the TLS and protocol features you need, and retain a rollback path until dependent applications pass their tests.

Prepare before installing anything
Record the current state
Run the checks appropriate to your platform and save their output with your deployment notes:

curl --version
command -v curl
curl-config --version 2>/dev/null || true
pkg-config --modversion libcurl 2>/dev/null || truecurl --version reports the executable that ran, its libcurl version, TLS backend and enabled protocols. It does not prove which library a separate application loads. command -v reveals the first executable selected by the current PATH; type -a curl (on shells that support it) shows other matches. curl-config and pkg-config describe development files selected for compilation, when those tools are installed.
Define the compatibility target
- List the minimum curl/libcurl version required by the feature, security fix or vendor support policy.
- Confirm the required TLS backend (for example OpenSSL, Schannel, Secure Transport or rustls), protocol support and certificate-store behavior.
- Identify every consuming application, container image, service account and scheduled job. A system shell and a service may have different
PATHvalues. - Check the curl security database and the release notes for the version you intend to deploy. Security fixes can depend on the operating-system crypto libraries as well as curl itself.
Keep a rollback copy
Do not remove the current package, directory or shared library before the replacement has passed its checks. Package managers normally retain enough metadata to downgrade; a source installation should live in its own prefix; a Windows archive should be extracted beside the old directory. Record the old path and the exact package or archive name.
Linux: update the distribution packages first
Linux distributions integrate curl with their dependency database, security update process and ABI policies. Use that channel unless the repository version genuinely lacks a feature or fix you require.

Debian and Ubuntu
- Refresh repository metadata:
sudo apt update. - Review available updates:
apt list --upgradable 2>/dev/null | grep -E '(^curl/|libcurl)'. - Upgrade the command-line package and the development package used by your build. A common OpenSSL variant is shown here; use the variant supplied by your release if its package name differs:
sudo apt install --only-upgrade curl libcurl4 libcurl4-openssl-dev - If you use the GnuTLS development package instead, upgrade that package rather than installing two competing development variants.
Fedora, RHEL and compatible systems
sudo dnf check-update
sudo dnf upgrade curl libcurl libcurl-develOn older releases that still use YUM, use the equivalent yum update operation. Let the distribution choose a mutually compatible libcurl and development package rather than copying a library over /usr/lib.
Arch Linux and derivatives
sudo pacman -Syu curlArch performs a full synchronized upgrade. Do not perform a partial curl-only upgrade against an unsynchronized system, because the resulting dependency set may be unsupported.
openSUSE
sudo zypper refresh
sudo zypper update curl libcurl libcurl-develPackage names and development-library variants differ by distribution release. If a command reports that a package is not found, search the repository for the package that provides curl-config or the libcurl.pc file instead of downloading an unrelated binary.

Verify the Linux result
command -v curl
curl --version
curl-config --version 2>/dev/null || true
pkg-config --modversion libcurl 2>/dev/null || trueCheck the version, TLS backend and protocol list against your target. Start a new shell or run hash -r if your shell cached the old executable. For an application, inspect its actual dependency resolution:

- Linux ELF binaries:
ldd /path/to/application | grep -i curland, where needed,readelf -d /path/to/application. - Build configuration: inspect
pkg-config --cflags --libs libcurland the compiler or linker command recorded by the build. - Containers and services: run the check inside the same image, account or service environment that executes the application.
When a Linux repository is too old
A distribution may intentionally remain on an older curl ABI or feature level. If the required capability is unavailable, build a second copy instead of overwriting the system installation.
- Obtain the signed upstream source archive for the chosen release and verify its checksum and signature before extraction.
- Set a distinct prefix. For example, for curl 8.22.0:
tar xf curl-8.22.0.tar.xz cd curl-8.22.0 ./configure --prefix=/opt/curl-8.22.0 --with-openssl make -j"$(nproc)" make test sudo make install - Record the configure options, compiler, TLS backend and archive verification result. If you need another TLS backend, replace
--with-opensslwith the backend supported by your build environment. - Test the installed copy by its absolute path, then select it deliberately for a shell or service:
/opt/curl-8.22.0/bin/curl --version export PATH=/opt/curl-8.22.0/bin:$PATH - For applications, point the build system at the matching headers and library with its documented prefix or
pkg-configpath. Configure the runtime loader only for that application or service where possible; do not globally replace the distribution’s libcurl.
make test is optional in the official Unix recipe but valuable before switching consumers. Tests that need network access can be affected by proxies, firewalls and certificate policy, so record any skipped or environment-dependent cases.
macOS: leave Apple’s system copy alone
macOS includes a system curl/libcurl used by Apple tooling. That copy can lag the upstream project. Treat /usr/bin/curl and its associated system libraries as operating-system components: do not delete, replace or relink them.
Install a user-managed curl
The curl download catalog lists macOS packages from maintained providers, including Homebrew. With Homebrew already installed, a typical isolated installation is:
brew update
brew install curl
brew upgrade curl
brew --prefix curlIf the formula is already current, brew upgrade curl simply reports that no upgrade is needed. Homebrew normally keeps the formula’s files in its own prefix rather than replacing Apple’s files.

Choose the intended executable
- Inspect both copies:
command -v curl,type -a curlandbrew --prefix curl. - Put the user-managed
bindirectory first in the shell’sPATH. In a typical zsh session:echo 'export PATH="$(brew --prefix curl)/bin:$PATH"' >> ~/.zprofile source ~/.zprofile - Verify the selected binary:
command -v curlandcurl --version. Start a new terminal if an old shell has cached the previous path.
Do not assume that changing your interactive shell changes GUI applications, launch agents, IDEs or service managers. Set an explicit executable path in those applications or configure their environment separately.
Verify the library used by a macOS application
Use otool -L /path/to/application to list linked libraries and inspect whether the application points into the user-managed prefix or Apple’s system locations. For a build, check pkg-config --modversion libcurl, the include path and the linker flags. Run the application’s integration tests with the same environment it uses in production.
Pay particular attention to the TLS backend and CA-store behavior. A command-line result from the new curl does not demonstrate that an application using a different libcurl has the same trust store or protocol support.
Windows: install beside the system copy
The official Windows listing currently provides curl 8.22.0 build 8.22.0_1, released on 2026-09-02, in x64 and ARM64 packages. The page lists Windows Vista, 7, 8, 10 and 11 as supported versions and publishes SHA-256 values and signature links. The x64 package hash is 7f23b039f6ea4197362d4468e1a0e71428201222e1bef3b680d5ef7b2aefb714; the ARM64 package hash is 3223726340eab447170004435bb1941081c9726b59c3a717a563d3287741e0b4.
Download and verify the archive
- Choose x64 or ARM64 to match the machine and download the archive and its detached signature from the official Windows page.
- Compute the checksum in PowerShell. Replace the file path with the archive you downloaded:
Get-FileHash 'C:UsersyouDownloadscurl-archive.zip' -Algorithm SHA256 - Compare the result exactly with the published value for your architecture. If you use the detached signature, verify it with the signing key and a tool such as GnuPG:
gpg --verify curl-archive.sig curl-archive.zip - Stop if either check fails. Download again from the official page and investigate the key or transport before extracting.
Extract to a separate directory
New-Item -ItemType Directory -Force C:Toolscurl-8.22.0 | Out-Null
Expand-Archive -Path 'C:UsersyouDownloadscurl-archive.zip' -DestinationPath C:Toolscurl-8.22.0The archive may contain a nested directory; locate the directory containing curl.exe and its required DLLs. Keep the existing system-managed copy in place.

Get-Command curl -All
where.exe curl
curl.exe --versionPowerShell can treat curl as an alias on some installations, so use curl.exe when you need the executable specifically. Add the directory containing the new curl.exe to the user PATH through Windows Environment Variables, or with a carefully constructed PowerShell command. Put it before the system directory only for accounts and applications that should use the new copy. Open a new process after changing PATH and repeat where.exe curl.

The curl project FAQ warns: “If you were to delete the file or replace it with a newer version downloaded from the curl website, then Windows Update ceases to work on your system.” A separate directory and explicit PATH selection avoids that failure mode.
Windows development builds
For projects that use Microsoft’s vcpkg dependency manager, curl documents the port command:
vcpkg install curl[tool]Use the triplet, runtime linkage and manifest settings required by your project. The resulting headers, import libraries and DLLs must all come from the same build; mixing a new header with an older DLL can produce load failures or subtle ABI problems.

After changing curl, test the application that matters. A successful curl --version check proves only which command-line executable ran.

- Linux: use
lddand, for embedded RPATH/RUNPATH details,readelf -d. Check the resolved path, not merely the library filename. - macOS: use
otool -Land inspect the install name and runtime search paths. - Windows: use your build tools’ dependency viewer, such as
dumpbin /DEPENDENTS application.exe, and inspect the application directory, PATH and any configured DLL search path.
Check the feature set at runtime
- Confirm the TLS backend and version expected by the application.
- Exercise the protocols it uses, such as HTTPS, HTTP/2 or HTTP/3, rather than assuming they were compiled in.
- Test certificate validation with the production CA-store configuration, proxy settings and client certificates.
- Run the application’s integration and smoke tests, including uploads, redirects, authentication and timeout behavior where those are part of its workload.
If the command line reports the new version but the application still behaves as before, the application is probably loading another libcurl, using a statically linked copy, or running with a different environment. Resolve that path before changing more files.

Rollback and troubleshooting
The old version still appears
Run command -v curl or where.exe curl and inspect every result. Fix PATH ordering, start a new shell or clear the shell’s command hash. For a service, edit its service-level environment rather than your interactive profile.
The executable is new but the library is old
Inspect ldd, otool -L or Windows dependency output for the application itself. Check for static linking, embedded RPATH/RUNPATH, application-local DLLs and virtual environments. Rebuild or relink against the intended development package, then rerun the integration tests.
TLS or certificate behavior changed
Compare the TLS backend, CA bundle or platform trust-store settings shown by curl --version and the application diagnostics. A newer curl built with a different backend can change supported ciphers, certificate locations or proxy behavior. Restore the previous prefix or package if the application cannot be adjusted safely.
The source build cannot find a TLS library
Install the platform’s development headers for the selected backend, inspect ./configure --help, and rerun configuration with an explicit prefix. Save the configure output. Do not copy random headers or libraries into system directories.
Windows PATH changes break another program
Remove the new user PATH entry, open a new process and confirm that the system-managed path is selected again. Prefer an application-specific configuration or wrapper script when only one tool needs the newer curl.
