A threat-definition update is different from a product-version update, so a current database does not necessarily mean you have the newest app build.
Manually update Bitdefender on Windows
- Connect the computer to the internet.
- In the Windows taskbar notification area, right-click the Bitdefender icon and select Update Now.
- Wait for the update window to show its progress. If Bitdefender asks you to restart, restart the computer to complete the update.
Bitdefender says its Windows software checks for updates every hour after the computer starts. The company distinguishes daily threat-definition updates from major product-version updates, which it says happen about every four weeks. These are separate update types, not a single schedule. Manually update Bitdefender on Mac
- Make sure the Mac is connected to the internet.
- Open the Bitdefender interface and select Actions > Update threat information database, or press Command-U.
- If a product update prompts you to restart, restart the Mac to apply it.
Automatic updates are enabled by default on Mac. Bitdefender says the app checks hourly when the Mac is online and Bitdefender Shield is enabled under Preferences > Protection. Threat signatures may update multiple times a day, while product-version changes occur less often. For details, see Bitdefender’s Mac version and update guide.

Threat definitions or signatures help the product recognize threats; a product-version update changes the application itself. A manual database check is useful for refreshing threat information, but it does not by itself establish that the application has the latest build. Likewise, a newer build may arrive separately and require a restart.

Check the Bitdefender version
On Windows, open Bitdefender’s Product information area to see the installed build. Bitdefender’s published Windows build is 27.0.62.355, released September 9, 2026, with a new Advanced Threat Defense driver listed as the change. The company says rollout is gradual, so a build difference does not necessarily mean the update has failed; a restart prompt may appear once it is available.
For Mac, Bitdefender lists version 10.3.4.12, released August 17, 2026. Its rollout is gradual, and the product may request a restart. These are Bitdefender-published version details and can change; check the linked platform guide for the latest listing.

What to do if a Bitdefender update failed
Windows: check whether a later update succeeded
Open Bitdefender’s Notifications area and check for a more recent successful update. Bitdefender says an occasional update error followed by a successful update needs no action. If no successful update has occurred in 24 hours, note the displayed error and follow the matching steps in its Windows update-error guide. The fix depends on the specific error, so avoid trying generic system or disk-repair commands as a first step.

Confirm the Mac has internet access. If you expect automatic checks, verify Bitdefender Shield is enabled under Preferences > Protection. Then try the manual database update. Restart if the product update requests it.

Bitdefender’s update support topic links to separate guidance for Windows and Mac errors, proxy-server configuration, offline threat-definition updates, and checking the application version. Use the section that matches your error or setup rather than applying instructions for a different case.

Bitdefender lists consumer security apps for Windows, macOS, Android, and iOS, but requirements vary by product and platform. Its requirements page says it supports final, officially released operating systems, not beta or pre-release versions. Check the current requirements for your specific app on the Bitdefender system requirements page before assuming a particular operating-system version is supported.
