To update an app manually, open the app store on your phone and use its updates list: on iPhone, go to the App Store account area and tap Update or Update All; on Android with Google Play, open Manage apps & device and update one app or all available updates.
Update apps manually on iPhone
- Open the App Store.
- Tap the account button or your photo.
- Tap App Updates.
- Tap Update beside the app you want, or tap Update All to install every update shown.
Apple says App Store apps update automatically by default. To switch that off or back on, open Settings > Apps > App Store and toggle App Updates. With automatic updates off, Apple says you receive App Store notifications when updates are released. Apple Support’s instructions cover iPhone and iPad.
Update apps manually on Android with Google Play
- Open the Google Play Store.
- Tap your profile icon, then tap Manage apps & device.
- Under Updates available, tap See details.
- Tap Update beside an app, or tap Update all to install all updates listed.
You can also open an app’s page in Google Play; when an update is available, its details page displays an Update button. Google’s Android app update instructions describe both methods.
Control automatic updates
iPhone
Open Settings > Apps > App Store, then turn App Updates on or off. When you turn automatic updates off, Apple says the App Store notifies you when updates are released.

Android: set the update policy for all apps
In Google Play, open Profile > Settings > Network preferences > Auto-update apps. Choose one of the options shown, such as updating over Wi-Fi or mobile data, Wi-Fi only, or not auto-updating. Google notes that the limited-mobile-data option is available only to a limited group.
Android: allow automatic updates for one app
- In Google Play, open Manage apps & device > Manage.
- Select the app, then open its details page.
- Tap More and enable Enable auto update.
If an Android app will not update
- Check the Play Store account: Google says an account sign-in error can prevent automatic updates.
- Review permission prompts: an update may ask you to accept new permissions before it can proceed.
- Restart if prompted: some app updates require a device restart.
Google documents a narrow exception to automatic-update settings: it may update certain apps if it determines the update fixes a critical security vulnerability. This is an exception for those security updates, not a general override of the settings.
