The right implementation depends on whether the app uses UIKit, SwiftUI, or both.
Start by recording what must not change
Before adjusting a screen, note its content, navigation paths, controls, and important states. Identify reused components as well as individual screens, and distinguish intended visual changes from behavior that should remain stable. This inventory is a practical way to reduce the chance that a presentation update quietly changes how the app works; it is not a sequence Apple requires.

Keep the change scoped. Update one screen or shared component, review it, and only then extend the approach. A shared component can affect several screens, so check its other uses after changing it.

UIKit: use stack views for groups and constraints for relationships
Apple’s UIKit view-layout guidance distinguishes between the two: “Use stack views to lay out the views of your interface automatically. Use Auto Layout when you require precise placement of the views.” Stack views suit groups whose arrangement should adjust; Auto Layout constraints express relationships governing view size and position. They can be used together.

- This phone is unlocked and compatible with any carrier of choice on GSM and CDMA networks (e.g. AT&T, T-Mobile, Sprint, Verizon, US Cellular, Cricket, Metro, Tracfone, Mint Mobile, etc.).
- Please check with your carrier to verify compatibility.
- The device does not come with headphones or a SIM card. It does include a generic (Mfi certified) charging cable.
- Tested for battery health and guaranteed to have a minimum battery capacity of 80%.
For content that must stay clear of system bars or other obstructions, use the safe area. UIKit’s safeAreaLayoutGuide represents the unobscured portion of a visible view and accounts for specified additional safe-area insets on a view controller’s root view. See Apple’s safe-area layout guide documentation.
SwiftUI: tune layout containers and safe-area behavior
In SwiftUI, use layout containers and modifiers to arrange and tune spacing, alignment, and safe-area behavior. Apple describes SwiftUI layout as adapting automatically to available space, with modifiers available to refine it; consult its simple-view layout guidance and positioning and alignment documentation. Confirm that any safe-area choices suit the content rather than assuming the same treatment is right for every screen.

Adapt to the space and content the app actually receives
A nominal iPhone model is not the only factor that affects geometry. Window dimensions, orientation, iPad windowing where supported, localization, language direction, and Dynamic Type can all change how a view fits. Apple’s layout guidance recommends designing for these variations; its UIKit adaptive-layout guidance emphasizes adapting to traits, using layout margins and safe areas, and preferring responsive rules over fixed screen dimensions.
- Use relationships to available space rather than assuming an app window always equals a particular device’s full screen.
- Check that text can wrap and controls remain usable with longer translations and larger Dynamic Type settings.
- Verify content that approaches system bars or other obstructions against the safe area.
- Consider landscape and changing window widths wherever the app supports them.
Preview the configurations most likely to expose regressions
After each scoped change, compare the revised screen with its previous behavior and inspect representative variations: narrow and wide widths, supported orientations, longer localized strings, and larger text. Xcode previews can show device sizes, orientation, language, and Dynamic Type variants. Apple explains how to inspect these variations in its Xcode interface-preview documentation. Some appearance or layout problems only show up under particular system appearance, text-size, or accessibility configurations, as its running-app diagnostics guidance notes.

- Open the changed view in the Xcode preview canvas and select representative device sizes and orientations the app supports.
- Preview longer text and larger Dynamic Type settings, then inspect wrapping, spacing, clipping, and whether controls remain reachable.
- Check the running app if a preview reveals a problem or does not reproduce it. Use relevant environmental overrides or the view debugger to investigate the actual layout.
- Review the screen’s navigation and interactions as well as its appearance; a layout-only intention does not guarantee behavior stayed unchanged.
Keep visual changes separate from durable data and restoration
A visual revision does not by itself require a data migration. UIKit state preservation and restoration concerns selected UI state, not durable app data; the system can discard restoration state. If a layout update changes restoration identifiers, view-controller creation, or which UI state is encoded, check restoration behavior separately. Do not rely on a UI restoration archive as the only home for durable user data. Apple’s state preservation and restoration documentation describes the distinction.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Extend a pattern only after the changed screen works
Once a screen or reusable component behaves as intended in the configurations that matter, apply the same layout approach to other screens. Recheck screens that share the component: a spacing or alignment change that improves one use can affect another. The incremental sequence here is a cautious engineering recommendation based on Apple’s adaptive-layout and preview guidance, not an Apple-mandated migration plan or a guarantee against regressions.
