To update a YouTube stream key in an FFmpeg script on Linode, copy the current key from YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room, replace the old key in the script’s output destination, and restart the FFmpeg process. You usually do not need to reset the key for a routine script edit. If you do reset it, update every encoder that uses the old key.
Find the current YouTube stream key
- Sign in to the YouTube account with access to the channel and open YouTube Studio.
- Choose Create → Go Live, then open the Stream tab in Live Control Room.
- In Stream key, copy the current key. YouTube describes stream keys as “like your YouTube stream’s password and address,” so treat the value as a secret.
If the key is still valid, reuse it. To rotate a compromised key, select Reset beside the hidden key and copy the newly generated value. Resetting requires channel-owner or manager permissions; editors and viewers cannot do it. Any encoder still configured with the old key will need to be updated.

Replace the key in your FFmpeg script
On your Linode host, locate the script or configuration that supplies FFmpeg’s output destination. The exact file and launch method depend on how you set up the instance; there is no single Linode-specific path. YouTube’s encoder setup uses a server URL and stream key, while FFmpeg’s RTMP output uses a destination URL. Replace the old key and change the endpoint only if necessary. Keep your input, codecs, bitrate, and other options unchanged unless you have a separate reason to alter them.

A safer pattern is to provide the URL and key through the environment rather than hard-coding them in a script. This is illustrative shell syntax, not a tested Linode service configuration; adapt the destination format to the URL and key shown for your stream:

Do not append an extra slash or path automatically: follow the endpoint/key arrangement shown in Live Control Room and the existing script. FFmpeg documents RTMP destination syntax, but the example above is not a verified command for every YouTube or Linode setup. See FFmpeg’s protocol documentation.
- Do not paste a real key into a public repository, support post, or article.
- Avoid printing the expanded destination in logs or diagnostic output.
- Restrict access to the configuration source that holds the key. The appropriate mechanism depends on how your process is launched.
Use RTMPS when your FFmpeg build supports it
RTMPS encrypts RTMP traffic in transit, and YouTube recommends it. In Live Control Room, open Stream, select the lock icon beside Stream URL, and copy the RTMPS URL. Use that URL with the current key. Do not substitute a sample server or port for the exact endpoint provided for your stream. Details are in YouTube’s RTMPS setup and troubleshooting guidance.

If your existing FFmpeg build cannot connect over RTMPS, check that the build supports the protocol before changing other script settings. For SSL errors, verify the full URL and protocol; YouTube suggests trying port 443 when the URL otherwise appears correct. Use the port YouTube shows or recommends for your case rather than changing it blindly.

Restart FFmpeg and verify the stream
- Save the updated script or configuration on the Linode host.
- Restart the FFmpeg process using the same method that normally launches it. The process manager or service setup varies by instance.
- Check FFmpeg’s output for a successful connection and active output. Do not share logs until you have checked that they do not expose the key or full destination.
- Open Live Control Room and confirm that the incoming preview appears. Follow the Live Control Room workflow to go live if your stream is not configured to start automatically.
YouTube’s encoder setup instructions cover copying the server URL and key into an encoder, starting the encoder, and completing the live workflow.

Troubleshoot a failed connection
- Authentication or key error: Check that the key is current and that it was not reset after you copied it. Copy the latest value from the correct channel and stream.
- Wrong destination: Compare the full output URL with the URL copied from Live Control Room. Confirm that the intended RTMP or RTMPS endpoint and key are combined in the format expected by your script.
- RTMPS connection or SSL error: Verify the URL and protocol, then confirm that the installed FFmpeg build supports RTMPS. If the URL otherwise looks correct, YouTube’s guidance suggests trying port 443 where appropriate.
- Timeout or no incoming preview: Recheck the endpoint and confirm that the Linode host has an outbound internet connection. YouTube also recommends checking encoder version and stream output when diagnosing a stream that appears healthy locally.
- Stream stopped after key rotation: Update every other encoder or process using the old key; resetting a key invalidates the value those processes were using.
For additional checks, use YouTube’s live-stream troubleshooting guide. The exact FFmpeg build, Linux distribution, process manager, and firewall rules vary, so inspect those parts of your Linode setup if the key and endpoint are correct.
