Before migrating: know what will and will not move
A loop stream is a running workload, not just a server disk. The destination needs the files, software, permissions, secrets, network rules, and restart behavior that make the current encoder work. Hetzner’s documentation does not establish a direct Linode-to-Hetzner snapshot import path. Its backups and snapshots cover the server disk, not attached volumes, so transfer or back up volume data separately. Hetzner’s snapshot guidance explains the scope.

Plan for a possible interruption. YouTube’s encoder workflow describes starting and stopping an encoder, but does not promise that replacing one encoder with another creates a seamless handoff. Also account for YouTube’s rule that streams under 12 hours are automatically archived when sending content stops. Check YouTube’s current encoder instructions and schedule the cutover around the event or archive behavior that suits your channel.

Record how the existing stream works while it is healthy. Linode is now part of Akamai Cloud; its migration documentation covers moves within Akamai Cloud, not a transfer of a workload to Hetzner. Akamai’s Linode compute documentation describes the source environment.

- Host and runtime: operating system and architecture, encoder or transcoder name and version, installed packages, service or container definitions, and the user and group that run the process.
- Loop inputs: video and audio files, playlists, scripts, working directories, and any local state. Note whether any of these are on attached block storage.
- Operations: service startup and restart behavior, logs, environment variables, and the steps used to recover a stopped encoder.
- Network: firewall policy, any ports the process needs, and whether it depends on a public IP or private network.
- YouTube settings: identify the current Live Control Room event or stream and where the stream key is configured. Do not put the key itself in inventory notes, shell history, or logs.
- Measured demand: observe CPU, memory, disk, network throughput, and transfer use while the loop is running. Choose destination capacity from the actual workload and media, not from the word “loop.”
This inventory is also your rollback reference: if the destination fails, you need to know how to restore the source encoder without reconstructing its configuration from memory.
2. Create and prepare the Hetzner server
Choose a Hetzner Cloud server whose operating system and architecture support the software you will run. Compare server type and location against the measurements you collected, along with storage, network needs, and the latency relevant to your operators and YouTube ingest. Hetzner’s server creation guide covers available creation options; its server overview notes that prices vary by server type and public IPs are separate. Confirm current prices and plan details before creating the server rather than relying on an old estimate.

- In the Hetzner Cloud Console, create a server and select a compatible OS image, location, and server type.
- Set up SSH access and decide whether the server needs a public IP, a private network, or both.
- Configure a firewall for administration and the stream process. Recreate the necessary rules explicitly; Linode firewall settings do not follow the workload to Hetzner.
- Add a Hetzner volume if the media or working set needs separate storage. Plan to move and verify its contents independently of server snapshots.
- Install the runtime and packages, then recreate the service user, file permissions, environment, service manager, and restart policy recorded from Linode. Cloud-init or another repeatable setup method can help make the build reproducible.
3. Copy media and configuration securely
Transfer the loop videos, playlists, scripts, configuration, and any required local state using a method suitable for your installation and data size. The exact transfer command depends on where the files live and how the current system is configured; do not assume a single command will migrate every Linode setup. Compare file counts or checksums after transfer where practical, and confirm that the service user on Hetzner can read every input file.
Recreate credentials through a secure method rather than copying them into a public command, shell history, or log. If your current setup uses NGINX RTMP, Linode’s RTMP tutorial is an example of an RTMP configuration and recommends authentication to prevent stream hijacking; it is not evidence that every loop stream uses NGINX RTMP.

Do not treat a Hetzner server snapshot as a copy of an attached volume. If you use a snapshot as part of your recovery plan, remember it captures a disk state; synchronize changes made after that state separately. See Hetzner’s cloud server FAQ and its backup and snapshot overview.
4. Configure and test the YouTube encoder on Hetzner
- Open YouTube Live Control Room and confirm the intended stream or event, its current server URL, and stream key. YouTube says previous stream settings may load again, but confirm they are the right settings before using them.
- Enter the Live server URL and stream key in the encoder on Hetzner. If the encoder supports RTMPS, use the RTMPS endpoint shown in Live Control Room rather than assuming an old configured URL is still current. YouTube describes RTMPS as RTMP over a TLS/SSL connection that provides encryption. See YouTube’s RTMPS guidance.
- Start the encoder and check the Live Control Room preview before treating the destination as ready. Confirm that audio and video are present and that the observed resolution and bitrate match your expected output.
- Check outbound connectivity and the destination host and port. YouTube’s RTMPS troubleshooting advises verifying the URL and, where appropriate, port 443. Ensure the Hetzner firewall permits the required outbound traffic.
- Check the viewer-facing stream and logs. Confirm that the loop advances as expected and that the service restarts correctly after a controlled stop or reboot before relying on it for the cutover.
5. Cut over with a rollback path
- Choose a cutover time that allows you to watch Live Control Room and the public stream. Leave the Linode configuration and files intact.
- Pause or stop the Linode encoder at the planned time so two encoders are not unintentionally sending to the same stream.
- Start the Hetzner encoder with the verified YouTube URL and key.
- Confirm the incoming preview and viewer-facing stream, then check audio, video, loop progression, and service logs.
- If the destination does not recover promptly, stop it and restart the Linode encoder using the recorded source configuration. Keep the Linode until the Hetzner service has passed operational checks and reboot-recovery testing.
Do not promise viewers an uninterrupted handoff: YouTube’s instructions cover encoder start and stop behavior, not a guarantee that an encoder replacement preserves one continuous event. When the encoder stops sending content, the under-12-hour archive behavior may also affect how the broadcast is presented.

Common migration problems and fixes
- The destination encoder cannot connect: recheck the current Live Control Room URL and key, outbound connectivity, firewall policy, and host and port. For RTMPS, use the URL shown by YouTube and consult its RTMPS troubleshooting guidance.
- The stream connects but has no media or the loop fails: verify that the transferred files are complete, paths in playlists and scripts are valid on the new host, and the service user has read permissions.
- The process stops after logout or reboot: verify that the encoder is managed by the intended service manager and that its startup and restart policy matches the source behavior. Test a reboot before cutover.
- Performance differs from Linode: compare CPU, memory, disk, and network measurements under the same workload. Revisit server type or storage choices using observed demand rather than assuming the providers’ machine sizes are equivalent.
- Files are missing despite a server snapshot: check whether they were stored on an attached volume. Hetzner server snapshots do not include attached volume data, which must be copied or backed up separately.
Cost and capacity checks
There is no established universal bandwidth, performance, or cost figure for this migration. Estimate data use from your actual bitrate and runtime, and compare Hetzner’s current server, public IP, volume, and backup costs with your measured needs. Hetzner says public IPs are separate from server pricing; verify current details on its server overview.
