How to Update a PlayStation PULSE Elite Headset on PS5 and PC

Update a PULSE Elite through the PS5 Accessories menu or Sony’s PlayStation Link PC Driver for Windows. Learn the exact steps, requirements, adapter checks and Mac limitations.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

To update a PULSE Elite on PS5, open Settings > Accessories > Headset > PS Link Device Software Update and follow the prompts. On a Windows computer, install Sony’s PlayStation Link PC Driver; it can update both the headset and its USB adapter without a PS5. Sony’s documented instructions do not provide a Mac update procedure.

If you are asking, “How do I update my PULSE Elite headset on PS5 or PC?”, the important distinction is that Sony calls the firmware device software. The headset and the included PlayStation Link USB adapter can each have software to check, so completing one check does not necessarily mean both components were updated.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

What the update actually covers

The PULSE Elite uses PlayStation Link for its wireless connection. Its firmware is referred to by Sony as device software; the two terms describe the same updateable software. The update process can involve two components:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • the PULSE Elite wireless headset; and
  • the included PlayStation Link USB adapter.

Sony’s update screen or PC driver checks the software on the available devices and tells you whether an update is offered. Sony does not publish one fixed “latest” version on the cited instructions, so the reliable test is the version shown for your own headset and adapter.

This is why an update may appear to have more than one stage. The headset is the part you wear, but the USB adapter is also a PS Link device with its own software. If the updater lists both, let it complete the check for each one instead of closing the utility after the first result.

Choose the right update route

Route What you need Where the update runs Does it require a PS5?
PS5 PS5 console, PULSE Elite and its PlayStation Link USB adapter when needed PS5 Settings menu Yes, for this route
Windows PC Windows 10 or Windows 11, PlayStation Link PC Driver, USB ports, internet access and a USB cable PlayStation Link PC Driver No
Mac Sony’s reviewed instructions do not establish a Mac updater No documented Mac procedure in these instructions A PS5 is the documented alternative if you can access one

If you have a PS5, its built-in menu is the shortest path because no separate updater installation is required. If you do not have a PS5, the Windows driver is Sony’s supported alternative. A Mac should not be treated as equivalent to Windows: the cited driver requirements and steps are specifically for Windows.

Neither route requires you to buy a new headset. The instructions are for updating a PULSE Elite you already own, using the adapter supplied with it. Sony’s support material does not establish a separate paid update service, subscription or accessory purchase.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Prepare before starting

Confirm that you have the correct adapter

The PlayStation Link USB adapter supplied with the headset is part of the setup and update path. Sony says the adapter is paired with the headset out of the box. If the adapter is not connected to the device you are using, insert it before checking for updates.

Use the included PS Link adapter rather than assuming that any USB Bluetooth dongle can perform the update. The documented PS5 and Windows flows identify the PlayStation Link adapter as the device that connects the headset to the host.

Keep both device types available

An update can apply to the headset, the adapter, or both. Have the headset and the included adapter available rather than checking only one component. If the software screen names two devices, read both statuses before deciding that the process is finished.

Use the correct platform instructions

PS5 instructions use the console’s Accessories menu. PC instructions use the PlayStation Link PC Driver. Do not substitute a generic audio-device updater or assume that a Mac utility exists because a Windows driver is available.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Allow time for the host to recognize the adapter

On Windows, the driver installation is tied to the adapter being inserted and recognized. Plug it into an available compatible USB port, wait for Windows to report that installation is complete, and then open the driver’s quick menu. Starting the update before that notification appears can leave you looking in the wrong place for the controls.

Update the PULSE Elite on a PS5

  1. Turn on the PS5. Connect the PlayStation Link USB adapter to the console if it is not already connected. The adapter is normally paired to the headset from the factory.
  2. Open Settings. From the PS5 home screen, select the gear icon for Settings.
  3. Open Accessories. In Settings, choose Accessories.
  4. Open Headset. Select Headset in the Accessories section.
  5. Open the PS Link updater. Choose PS Link Device Software Update.
  6. Check each listed device. The screen shows the software status for the wireless headset and USB adapter. If a new update is available, continue with the on-screen instructions.
  7. Complete the prompts. Leave the headset and adapter connected as directed until the console finishes. The exact prompts can vary with the software currently installed, so follow the wording on your PS5 rather than expecting a particular version number.

The menu path is Settings > Accessories > Headset > PS Link Device Software Update. If the screen reports that no update is available, the console is not offering a newer device-software package for the connected PS Link devices at that time.

What to check on the PS5 screen

Look for the headset and adapter as separate entries when the console presents device information. A “no update” result is a status for the connected software, not a promise that every PULSE Elite ever made has the same version number. Sony’s instructions do not give one universal current firmware number, so record or compare only the information shown for your own devices.

Keep PS5 system software current too

Sony recommends keeping the PS5’s own system software updated as well as the PS Link device software. These are separate update categories: updating the console does not replace the headset-and-adapter check, and checking PS Link devices does not update the PS5 operating system. If the console itself has a pending system update, complete that through the PS5’s normal system-software controls, then return to the PS Link device menu.

Update the PULSE Elite from a Windows PC

Sony’s PlayStation Link PC Driver allows a Windows computer to update PS Link devices without a PS5. Sony specifically lists PULSE Elite headset firmware updates and PlayStation Link USB adapter firmware updates as supported.

The driver is not simply a sound-output panel. It is Sony’s updater for PS Link devices, and its quick menu is where the update action is exposed after Windows recognizes the adapter.

Windows requirements

Requirement Sony’s stated specification
Operating system Windows 10 or Windows 11
Storage At least 20 MB available
Display 1,280 × 800 or higher
Connectivity Internet access for installation
Computer hardware An available compatible USB port
Cable A USB cable for device updates

The display, storage and connectivity figures are the driver’s listed requirements. They are not a guarantee that every computer configuration will complete an update successfully; the adapter must also be recognized by Windows and the required USB connection must be available.

Keep the 20 MB figure in perspective: it is the minimum storage Sony lists for the driver, not the size of the headset update itself. Similarly, 1,280 × 800 is the minimum display resolution Sony lists for the driver interface. Meeting those numbers does not remove the need for internet access, a compatible USB port and a USB cable.

Install or open the driver

  1. Insert the PlayStation Link USB adapter. Plug it into an available compatible USB port on the Windows PC.
  2. Wait for installation. Sony says the driver installs automatically and Windows notifies you when installation is complete.
  3. Open the driver quick menu. Use the Windows notification to open the PlayStation Link PC Driver’s quick menu.

Run the device update

  1. Start the update from the quick menu. The driver identifies the connected PS Link device or devices and presents the available device-software action.
  2. Connect the USB cable when requested. Sony lists a USB cable as required for updating devices. Use the cable at the point the driver requests it; the cited instructions do not specify that every update uses the same screen sequence.
  3. Follow every on-screen instruction. Allow the driver to work through the headset and, when offered, the USB adapter. Do not assume that seeing one component means the other has also been updated.
  4. Finish only when the driver says the process is complete. The driver’s messages are the authority for the status of that update session.

The Windows driver is useful when a PS5 is unavailable because the updater runs on the PC. It does not turn the process into a generic Bluetooth update: the supported path uses the PlayStation Link USB adapter and the driver’s own update flow.

Why the USB cable matters

Sony’s requirements specifically include a USB cable for device updates. Keep one ready before opening the quick menu; the driver may ask you to connect it during the update flow. The cited instructions do not identify a particular cable length, connector brand or screen-by-screen sequence, so follow the cable prompt displayed by your installed driver rather than forcing a connection at an earlier stage.

When the Windows quick menu does not appear

Sony’s troubleshooting sequence is deliberately simple. Perform the actions in this order:

  2. Insert the adapter again.
  3. Reboot the computer.
  4. Check Windows notifications again for the driver’s quick menu.

If the menu appears after reinserting the adapter or restarting, continue with the normal cable-and-prompt process. A missing quick menu does not by itself prove that the headset is unpaired or defective. The adapter is paired with the headset out of the box, so first repeat the remove, reinsert and reboot sequence Sony provides. Also confirm that you inserted the PS Link adapter, not a different USB accessory.

If the headset still has a problem after updating

Verify both PS Link components

Sony’s troubleshooting guidance starts by making sure that both the headset and the included PlayStation Link USB adapter have the latest device software. A headset check alone is not enough when the adapter is also part of the connection.

Use the documented headset reset

Sony support describes a reset for the headset: hold the headset’s PS Link button for at least 10 seconds, then press the button once to turn the headset on again. The wording for this instruction was surfaced from a Spanish-language Sony support page, so the exact labels can vary by region. A reset is a troubleshooting action, not a replacement for checking the headset and adapter for current device software.

Because this reset instruction is presented on a regional support page, check the applicable Sony support locale if your button labels or menu wording differ. Do not interpret the reset as a firmware installation; it simply gives you another troubleshooting step after confirming the device software.

Separate update problems from connection problems

  • If the PS5 menu or Windows driver cannot see a device, start with the physical adapter connection and the platform requirements.
  • If the updater offers software but the process does not complete, repeat the documented connection steps and follow the driver or console prompts exactly.
  • If the update completes but an issue remains, verify both components again before using the headset reset.

These checks also help identify which host is at fault. A PS5 menu issue points you toward the console’s accessory connection; a Windows quick-menu issue points you toward adapter recognition, driver installation and the listed PC requirements. In either case, the adapter should remain part of the diagnosis.

What Mac owners should know

Sony’s reviewed driver requirements cover Windows 10 and Windows 11, not macOS. The cited instructions do not document a Mac driver, a Mac application or a Mac-specific update sequence. Therefore, do not install an unrelated Windows package through a compatibility layer and assume it is an official method.

If you use a Mac but can access a PS5, the PS5 menu is the documented alternative: connect the headset’s PlayStation Link adapter and use Settings > Accessories > Headset > PS Link Device Software Update. If you have neither a PS5 nor a supported Windows PC, these instructions do not establish another official route.

In practical terms, Mac ownership does not make the headset unupdatable, but it does mean you need access to one of the documented hosts: a PS5 or a Windows 10/11 computer that meets Sony’s requirements. Do not promise yourself that a Mac updater will appear merely because the Windows driver exists.

Common mistakes to avoid

Looking for a universal firmware number

Sony does not state one fixed current firmware number on the cited update instructions. The version that matters is the one displayed for your connected headset and adapter. Avoid guides that present an unqualified number as current for every region and device.

Updating only the headset

The USB adapter has its own device software. Check the adapter as well as the headset whenever the console or driver lists both.

Using the wrong menu

The relevant PS5 control is under Accessories > Headset, not a general audio-output menu. On Windows, use the PlayStation Link PC Driver’s quick menu rather than a generic Windows sound panel.

Expecting the PC flow to work without a cable

Sony lists a USB cable as needed for device updates on PC. Keep one available and connect it when the driver requests it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Assuming the adapter is unpaired because it is not visible immediately

The included adapter is paired with the headset out of the box. Reinsert it and restart the PC if the Windows quick menu does not appear before treating the situation as a deeper fault.

Confusing console updates with device updates

Updating PS5 system software and updating PS Link device software are separate tasks. Complete the PS Link check even when the console itself says its system software is current.

Stopping after the first component

If the updater presents both the headset and adapter, review the status of both. A completed headset step does not confirm that the adapter received the same treatment.

PS5 versus Windows: which should you use?

Choose PS5 when

  • You already have access to a PS5.
  • You want to use the console’s built-in update menu without installing PC software.
  • You are on macOS and need the documented route available to you.
  • You want the shortest documented path, since the update control is built into PS5 Settings.

Choose Windows when

  • You do not have a PS5.
  • Your computer runs Windows 10 or Windows 11 and meets the driver requirements.
  • You can provide a compatible USB port, internet access for installation and a USB cable for the update.
  • You need to update both the PULSE Elite and its adapter from a computer rather than a console.

Do not choose a route based on a claimed firmware number

Both routes check the software on the devices you actually connect. The console or driver’s result is more meaningful than a number copied from an older guide, because Sony’s instructions do not promise one universal current version.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Quick checklist

  • Use the included PlayStation Link USB adapter.
  • On PS5, open Settings > Accessories > Headset > PS Link Device Software Update.
  • On Windows, install or open the PlayStation Link PC Driver.
  • Meet the Windows requirements: Windows 10/11, 20 MB or more free storage, 1,280 × 800 or higher display resolution, internet access, a compatible USB port and a USB cable.
  • Check software for both the PULSE Elite headset and USB adapter.
  • If the Windows quick menu is missing, remove and reinsert the adapter, reboot the PC and check again.
  • For persistent issues, verify both devices are current before using the 10-second PS Link-button reset.
  • Do not assume a Mac update method is available; use a PS5 if you need the documented non-Windows alternative.
  • Do not rely on a universal firmware number; use the status shown by your console or driver.
  • Keep PS5 system software current separately from PS Link device software.

Can I update the headset on a Mac?

Sony’s documented instructions reviewed here do not provide a Mac driver or Mac update procedure. If you use macOS, the documented alternative is to access a PS5 and use its PS Link Device Software Update menu.

What is the latest PULSE Elite firmware version?

Sony does not state one fixed current version on the cited update instructions. Check the version and update status shown for your connected headset and adapter.

What should I do if updating does not fix the problem?

Confirm that both the headset and adapter have the latest device software. Sony also describes holding the headset’s PS Link button for at least 10 seconds and then pressing it once to turn the headset on again; regional support wording may vary.

Do I need to pay for an update or buy a new headset?

No purchase is identified as necessary for the documented update routes. Use the PULSE Elite and the included PlayStation Link adapter with a PS5 or supported Windows PC.

The Bottom Line

Use Settings > Accessories > Headset > PS Link Device Software Update on PS5. Without a PS5, use Sony’s PlayStation Link PC Driver on a qualifying Windows 10/11 PC, with internet access, a compatible USB port and a USB cable. Check both the PULSE Elite and its adapter, and do not assume Sony provides a Mac updater or one universal firmware number.
