Apple lists restarting as a condition that requires a passcode, so repeated Face ID or Touch ID attempts will not replace it. Apple’s passcode guidance also lists other circumstances that can trigger a passcode prompt: more than 48 hours without unlocking; no passcode unlock in the last 6.5 days and no biometric unlock in the last 4 hours; a remote lock command; five unsuccessful biometric attempts; or starting Emergency SOS or Medical ID. A prompt by itself therefore does not establish that an inactivity reboot occurred.
What an inactivity reboot changes
Reporting about iOS 18.1 describes an inactivity reboot as a restart after an iPhone has remained locked and unused for a period. After a restart, the device is in a state commonly described as Before First Unlock; entering the passcode moves it to After First Unlock. For the owner, the practical result is straightforward: the first unlock requires the device passcode.

Apple’s owner support instructions confirm the passcode requirement after restart, but do not specify the inactivity timer, which devices or software versions support the feature, or whether there is a setting to disable it. Those details should not be inferred from the passcode prompt alone. 9to5Mac’s report on the iOS 18.1 behavior provides the feature context; it is not Apple’s user guide.

Stop guessing if you are unsure. Apple warns that repeated incorrect passcode attempts can disable the device. If you have genuinely forgotten the passcode, Apple’s supported path is to erase the iPhone using a computer or recovery mode, then set it up again. Erasing removes the data on the iPhone. If you have a backup made before the passcode was forgotten, you can restore it during setup; without a backup, you must set up the iPhone as new. A backup can help recover previously saved data after erasure, but it does not unlock the still-locked phone. Regular iCloud or computer backups are useful preparation for this possibility.

No physical product is needed when you know the device passcode: enter it once after the restart. If you have forgotten the passcode, use Apple’s erase-and-restore process rather than relying on a purported bypass; a third-party bypass is not an Apple-supported unlock method.
