If your AirTag is stuck on an old location, first check the status and timestamp in Find My. An AirTag does not send a continuous GPS or cellular feed: it broadcasts Bluetooth, and nearby devices in Apple’s Find My network can detect and relay its location. A stale report may mean the tag has not been detected recently, rather than that it has failed.
How AirTag location updates work
Apple says, “Your AirTag sends out a secure Bluetooth signal that can be detected by nearby devices in the Find My network.” Those devices can relay a location to iCloud, where it appears in Find My. The map is therefore based on network detections, not a direct, continuous GPS position from the AirTag. Apple describes Find My as a crowdsourced Bluetooth network with anonymous, encrypted reporting; its support page characterizes the network as having over a billion Apple devices, but does not state a year for that figure.

Because a fresh relay depends on a nearby participating device detecting the Bluetooth signal, the map may not change while the AirTag is away from such a device. Apple’s reviewed support information does not give a typical update delay or a minimum density of relay devices, so a delay by itself does not identify a specific fault.

- Open Find My and tap Items.
- Select your AirTag and note the location, status, and time shown.
- Use that status to choose the next check:
- An old location or “Last Seen” time: This is a last-known report, not proof that the AirTag is still there. Apple says Find My can show a last known location for up to seven days when a current location is unavailable.
- “No location found”: Apple says this appears after more than seven days without a location report.
- “Not sharing location • Online”: Apple explains that the device is online but unable to send its location; Location Services being off is one example.
These labels describe what Find My can report. They do not, on their own, establish that the battery is dead or that the AirTag needs replacing. See Apple’s guide to Find My location status.

If you are trying to find the item nearby
A map report and Precision Finding are different ways to locate an item. For an item that may be nearby, select the AirTag in Find My and use the map, directions, or Play Sound. Use Find Nearby when it is available and the iPhone is within connection range. Walls and other objects between the iPhone and AirTag can affect Precision Finding, according to Apple.
If the item is out of range, use the map or directions to go toward its reported location, or try Play Sound when the tag can be reached. Find Nearby is a nearby-finding feature; it does not make a remote map report refresh. Apple’s instructions are in Find a nearby AirTag with your iPhone.

If Find Nearby is missing
Check whether the iPhone supports Ultra Wideband, install the latest iOS version available for it, and confirm that Find My has location access. For the most accurate result, turn on Precise Location for Find My in Location Services. These checks address availability and accuracy of nearby finding; they cannot make a distant AirTag report a new location.
Check the battery without assuming it is the cause
Look in Find My for a low-battery alert. Apple lists a user-replaceable CR2032 coin-cell battery for AirTag. A stale timestamp alone is not evidence that the battery needs replacing, and replacing it cannot guarantee a fresh location if no nearby Find My device detects the tag afterward.

When the location still does not change
If the status and nearby-finding checks do not explain the problem, use Apple Support’s further help options. The Apple guidance cited here does not establish a universal reset procedure as a fix for stale locations, so do not rely on a reset as a guaranteed way to force an update.
