If Wi-Fi troubleshooting has not fixed the problem, you can uninstall the wireless adapter in Device Manager and restart Windows. Before you do, save the correct driver for your PC or adapter in case Windows does not reinstall a working one automatically. Uninstalling the device is not the same as permanently deleting its driver package.
Before you uninstall the wireless adapter
Microsoft recommends this step as part of troubleshooting when other connection fixes have not worked, including when Wi-Fi stopped working after a recent update. It is not a first fix for every wireless problem. The procedure below applies to Windows 10 and Windows 11; the exact driver depends on your computer or adapter model.

- Find and identify the adapter. Open Device Manager and expand Network adapters. Note the wireless adapter’s name. To record the installed driver details, right-click it, select Properties, then open the Driver tab to see its date and version. Microsoft’s Wi-Fi troubleshooting guide provides the recommended uninstall-and-restart procedure.
- Save a matching driver first. Download the driver for your exact PC or wireless adapter model from its manufacturer, checking that it supports your Windows version. If the affected PC has no internet connection, download the driver on another computer and transfer it on a USB flash drive. Microsoft advises having this backup available before uninstalling.
Uninstall the device and let Windows reinstall its driver
- In Device Manager, expand Network adapters, then right-click the wireless adapter you identified.
- Select Uninstall device. If the option Attempt to remove the driver for this device appears, select it, then choose Uninstall.
- Restart the computer: select Start > Power > Restart. Windows will look for and attempt to install a network adapter driver after restart.
- Check whether Wi-Fi works. If Windows has not installed a working driver, run the saved manufacturer driver installer and follow its prompts.
Automatic installation is expected, not guaranteed. If you need the fallback driver, use one that matches both the hardware model and the supported Windows version rather than assuming a generic wireless driver will work.

Device uninstall is not the same as driver-package deletion
Uninstalling the adapter through Device Manager removes that device instance’s association with its driver; it does not necessarily remove the driver package from the Windows driver store. Microsoft Learn documents device removal and package removal as separate operations: PnPUtil commands.

For advanced administration, PnPUtil can delete a package using pnputil /delete-driver <oem#.inf> /uninstall. This command requires the package’s actual published OEM INF name, not a guessed filename. The /delete-driver command is available starting with Windows 10 version 1607.
Do not use package deletion as the routine way to reinstall Wi-Fi. If you delete the only matching package, the adapter may be left without a driver and stop working. Microsoft recommends creating a system restore point before package changes; Windows Update may also reinstall a needed driver. If the adapter or connection still does not work
- The adapter is missing from Device Manager: Windows may not be detecting it. Check the computer or adapter manufacturer’s support site for a compatible driver and model-specific guidance.
- The adapter is listed, but Wi-Fi still fails: Open its Properties > Driver tab and compare the displayed date and version with the manufacturer’s driver listing. If needed, install the saved matching driver.
- You are trying to remove the package permanently: Device Manager’s ordinary uninstall does not guarantee package deletion or prevent Windows Update from reinstalling a needed driver. Use PnPUtil only when you have identified the correct package and understand the risk of leaving the adapter without a driver.
