Each has a different rollback method. Restoring a draft or Canvas version does not automatically publish it to your storefront.
Choose the rollback path
| Where the change happened | What to try | What it restores | Separate publish step? |
|---|---|---|---|
| Standard theme editor; change is unsaved | Use Undo in the editor or the keyboard shortcut | Unsaved customizations in the editor’s undo history | No; these are unsaved edits |
| Sidekick in Canvas | Ask Sidekick to reverse or adjust it, or restore an earlier Canvas version | A requested correction or the selected Canvas version | Yes, to make the restored version customer-visible |
| Existing theme code file | Use that file’s Timeline | The entire selected file | Review and publish the theme when ready |
| Shopify Magic-generated theme block | Preview it; delete it if it causes a problem | The generated block is removed | Review and publish the theme when ready |
These are distinct Shopify workflows, not one universal AI designer. Canvas is in early access and is available only to certain stores. Shopify also offers AI-generated personalized themes and Shopify Magic-generated theme blocks. See Shopify’s Canvas theme instructions and its guide to generating theme blocks.

Undo an unsaved edit in the standard theme editor
Use Undo in the editor’s menu bar, or press Ctrl+Z on Windows or Command+Z on macOS. To redo an action, use Ctrl+Y on Windows or Command+Y on macOS. Shopify documents these shortcuts in its theme editor features overview.

The standard editor’s undo/redo history does not reverse changes after you save: Shopify states, “After you save your changes, you can no longer redo or undo.” For saved changes, check whether the change is in Canvas or whether the affected code file has a Timeline.

Reverse a Sidekick change in Canvas
Ask Sidekick for a correction
In the same conversation, describe what you want reversed or restored. Shopify gives examples such as “Undo that last change” and “Go back to how it was before.” Review the result rather than assuming the request restored the exact prior state.
Restore a prior Canvas version
- Open theme history in Canvas and select the version you want to recover.
- Inspect its preview to confirm it contains the state you intend to restore.
- Choose Restore. This replaces the current Canvas version.
- When you are satisfied with the restored theme, choose Publish separately if you want customers to see it.
Restoring and publishing are separate actions: Shopify says customers view the restored version only after it is published. Also, Canvas Undo is not a rollback path for Sidekick edits. Shopify notes, “When Sidekick makes a change, your undo history is cleared,” including earlier changes in that history. Follow the steps in Shopify’s Canvas documentation.

Roll back a change to an existing theme code file
- Open the theme’s code editor and select the affected existing file.
- Open the file’s Timeline and inspect the available earlier revisions.
- Copy any current code you may want to keep before restoring.
- Restore the chosen revision, then review the file and preview the theme before publishing.
Timeline restoration replaces the entire selected file, not just the changed lines. Shopify says, “The Timeline view restores one existing file at a time.” It does not restore a whole theme or recover deleted files, and older history may no longer be available. See Shopify’s theme code editing documentation.
Handle a problematic Shopify Magic-generated block
Preview a generated block before keeping it. Shopify warns that generated code can contain errors or behave unexpectedly; if a block causes a problem, it may need to be deleted. Shopify says its Support team and third-party theme developers do not troubleshoot generated block code, and suggests hiring a Shopify Partner for help. Shopify’s guidance is in its theme block documentation.

Protect the live storefront while you review
- If the storefront is currently correct and the unwanted changes are in an unpublished draft, keep working on that draft or a copy; do not publish until you have reviewed the result.
- Before experimenting, duplicate the theme as a backup. Shopify explains how in its theme duplication instructions.
- Preview the restored theme on relevant pages and display sizes, then publish only when you are satisfied.
- If asking Shopify’s AI tool to fix the result does not work, or the issue affects your ability to sell, Shopify’s AI guidance recommends contacting Shopify Support: Shopify Magic and AI tools.
