To undo one Windows 11 privacy or performance change, return to the control you changed and switch it back. Privacy options are under Settings > Privacy & security; power mode is under Settings > System > Power & battery; and visual effects are in the Adjust the appearance and performance of Windows dialog. If you cannot identify the setting or several system changes happened together, use a restore option only after checking what it will roll back.
Undo the specific setting first
Windows does not provide one universal reset button for every privacy and performance preference. A setting-level reversal is the narrowest option: find the control you changed and restore its previous value. Labels and availability can vary by Windows version, device configuration, or organizational management.

Privacy controls
Open Settings > Privacy & security. Check the general privacy options and the linked pages for specific features to locate the relevant control. Power mode
Go to Settings > System > Power & battery and choose the mode you want. Windows offers Best power efficiency, Balanced, and Best performance; the available control can depend on the device configuration. Best power efficiency prioritizes battery life, Balanced trades off performance and battery use, and Best performance prioritizes performance. Microsoft explains the modes in its power mode guidance.
Visual effects
Search Start for Adjust the appearance and performance of Windows. In the dialog’s Visual Effects tab, review the effects you changed and restore the prior selection. This is preferable to changing unrelated performance settings when the problem followed a visual-effects adjustment. See Microsoft’s visual effects guidance.

If you cannot identify what changed
When a recent system-wide change, driver installation, or several setting changes caused a problem, System Restore may be appropriate if a restore point exists from before the issue. It rolls back system files, registry settings, and installed programs to the selected point, but leaves personal files alone. That wider rollback can also undo other system changes made since the point, so it is not a substitute for reversing a single known toggle.
Check for a restore point
- Search Start for Create a restore point and open it.
- Check the System Protection tab and whether a suitable restore point is available. Microsoft’s current guidance says System Protection is not enabled by default, so a usable point is not guaranteed. See System Protection and restore points.
Run System Restore
- Search Control Panel for Recovery, then select Open System Restore. Alternatively, press Windows key + R, enter
rstrui.exe, and press Enter. - Choose a restore point dated before the problem. If offered, select Scan for affected programs to review programs and drivers that may be changed.
- Review the selected point and its consequences before proceeding through the restore prompts.

Point-in-time restore: a newer, broader option
On Windows 11 version 24H2 or later, point-in-time restore can return apps, settings, and personal files to a recent snapshot, when one is available. Microsoft says these points are retained for up to 72 hours. This is a broader rollback than System Restore because personal files are included; changes made after the chosen snapshot can be lost. Check the snapshot’s date and time carefully before confirming. Details are in Microsoft’s Windows recovery options.

Back up important files before resetting, and locate the BitLocker recovery key if the device is encrypted. Microsoft warns that some recovery options can cause data loss; its Reset your PC instructions explain the process and choices.
