The expense ratio concerns recurring fund costs; NAV is the fund’s calculated per-share value; the exchange price is what buyers and sellers trade at; and tracking error compares fund returns with a named benchmark. To compare funds fairly, check their current disclosures, the same measurement dates, and the benchmark and valuation methods in force during that period.
What does a crypto ETF expense ratio tell you?
An expense ratio is the disclosed annual rate of fund operating expenses. Those costs reduce the assets or returns attributable to shareholders over time. Some spot products describe a recurring sponsor fee separately, so read the fund’s fee table rather than assuming every product uses the same label or includes the same costs.

The stated fund fee may not capture everything an investor pays. Brokerage commissions and fees charged by financial intermediaries can be additional. Check whether a waiver applies, who qualifies, what costs it covers, and when it expires.

For a dated example—not a current market average—the Grayscale Bitcoin Mini Trust ETF fact sheet reported a 0.15% management fee, with figures as of March 31, 2026. See the SEC-filed fact sheet dated April 23, 2026 for that product’s figures and context.

What is NAV, and how is it calculated?
Net asset value is the fund’s calculated value per share: the value of its assets minus its liabilities, divided among shares under the fund’s valuation policy. Liabilities can include accrued, unpaid expenses. In one bitcoin trust filing, the administrator calculates NAV each business day by totaling bitcoin and other assets, then subtracting liabilities, including accrued expenses. That is a specific filing’s description, not a universal schedule or method for every crypto fund; see the SEC filing for the period ended June 30, 2026.
The valuation reference matters. Bitwise’s prospectus says its NAV references the CME CF Bitcoin Reference Rate – New York Variant, which is calculated from aggregated executed trade flow on major bitcoin trading platforms. A different fund can use a different reference rate, index, or valuation policy. The Bitwise Bitcoin ETF prospectus describes that product’s approach.

Why can an ETF’s trading price differ from NAV?
NAV is a calculated value; the market price is the price at which ETF shares trade on an exchange. Shares can trade above NAV (at a premium) or below it (at a discount). A CoinShares SEC filing expressly notes this possibility for its funds. See the January 2026 registration filing.

This distinction matters to an investor’s actual result. Buying at a premium or selling at a discount can affect execution and realized returns even if the fund’s NAV performance is close to its benchmark. When evaluating a possible trade, compare the quoted market price with the fund’s reported NAV or premium/discount information, and consider that the market price can move after the NAV calculation.

What does tracking error mean?
Tracking error describes how a fund’s returns vary relative to its named benchmark over a specified period. It is not another name for the expense ratio. Fees and liabilities can contribute to returns lagging a benchmark, but benchmark construction, valuation timing, fund trading, and market-price premiums or discounts can also affect comparisons.
Read the exact measure and its scope. Average daily tracking error, a cumulative difference in returns, and a stated tracking objective are not interchangeable. For example, a 2022 SEC filing for a bitcoin futures fund stated: “The Fund will endeavor to trade in Bitcoin Futures Contracts so that the Fund’s average daily tracking error against the Benchmark will be less than 10 percent over any period of 30 trading days.” That is a fund-specific objective, not a universal standard, a reported result for every period, or a guarantee for spot bitcoin funds. See the SEC filing.

The evidence cited here establishes no universal acceptable tracking-error threshold for crypto ETFs. A tracking figure is meaningful only alongside its benchmark, return basis, and measurement window.
Why do benchmark changes matter?
A fund’s benchmark helps define what its performance is being compared with, and a fund may change that benchmark. The ARK 21Shares Bitcoin ETF prospectus supplement says the trust began using the FTSE Bitcoin Index effective August 27, 2026, after previously using the CME CF Bitcoin Reference Rate – New York Variant. It also says the fund seeks to track index performance adjusted for expenses and liabilities. When comparing returns across a period that includes the change, identify which benchmark applied to each part of the period. See Prospectus Supplement No. 3.

How to compare crypto ETFs fairly
Use the current prospectus, fee table, shareholder reports, and any relevant supplements for each fund. Compare like with like rather than relying on a single headline fee or return figure.
Quick Recap
- Check recurring costs. Record the annual operating expense rate or sponsor fee, other stated costs, and any waiver’s eligibility and expiration date. Note that commissions and intermediary charges may be separate.
- Identify the benchmark. Write down its exact name, administrator, and methodology, and check whether it changed during the return period you are comparing.
- Read the valuation policy. Find the pricing source, NAV calculation timing, and how the fund accounts for liabilities and accrued expenses.
- Separate NAV from market price. Check the premium or discount relevant to your intended trade rather than treating an exchange quote as the fund’s NAV.
- Make the tracking comparison precise. Use the same dates and return basis for both funds; note whether a figure is an objective, a realized result, or an estimate, and whether it is daily or cumulative.
- Check fund strategy. Spot holdings, futures, leveraged, hedged, and active strategies are not interchangeable. A return difference may reflect those structural choices as well as expenses.
