Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesIf filament still moves through the printer, a cold pull may clear a partial clog. If it will not load or extrude, use the printer maker’s full-jam procedure instead. First confirm that the blockage is actually at the nozzle: filament can also get stuck higher in the hotend or in a PTFE tube. Temperatures, menu paths, and tools vary by printer and nozzle, so use the instructions for your exact model.
How to tell whether the nozzle is clogged
A full blockage may stop extrusion altogether. A partial clog can be harder to spot: filament may still load and unload, but print flow becomes unreliable. Prusa Research lists these possible signs:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
- Thin or inconsistent lines, gaps, or missing layers.
- Filament curling onto and sticking to the nozzle during a purge.
- Clicking from the extruder as its gears struggle against resistance.
- Little or no filament coming out of the nozzle.
These symptoms point to an extrusion problem, but they do not prove that the nozzle tip is blocked. A jam can be higher in the hotend or in a PTFE tube. First-layer calibration, slicer settings, filament condition, cooling, drive gears, and nozzle installation can also affect extrusion. See Prusa’s under-extrusion troubleshooting guide alongside its clogged nozzle and hotend guide.

| What you observe | Likely next step | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Some filament still passes through | Consider a cold pull for a partial clog. | Prusa describes cold pulls for specified printer families and recommends PLA for those models. Nozzle type matters. |
| Filament will not load or extrude | Follow the exact printer maker’s full-jam procedure. | Some Prusa procedures use a heated push with a needle, but this is not a universal method and does not apply to every nozzle geometry. |
| A clearing attempt fails or the blockage seems higher up | Inspect the filament path, including the PTFE tube, and use the model’s service instructions. | Replacing the nozzle alone will not fix every hotend or filament-path jam. |
Do not choose a method by temperature alone. The appropriate procedure depends on whether filament moves, the nozzle’s design, where the obstruction is, and the printer manufacturer’s instructions.

- Cleaning Procedure: Before cleaning, heat the nozzle to 200°C or above (CAUTION: HOT! Prevent burns), then gently insert and remove the steel cleaning pin through the nozzle tip. Continue repeating this process until smooth filament flow is achieved
For a partial clog: try a model-approved cold pull
A cold pull uses partly melted filament to pick up debris as it is withdrawn from the hotend. It is an option when some filament still passes through, not a guaranteed fix for a completely jammed path.
Prusa recommends PLA for the MK2.5/S, MK3/S/+, and MK3.5/S families and provides a detailed procedure for those models. Its heating, cooling, pull temperatures, and LCD steps are model-specific; do not transfer them to another printer. Follow Prusa’s cold-pull instructions for a supported model, or use your own printer maker’s procedure. A printer with a supported automatic cold-pull function may have a separate menu workflow.
Check the pulled filament before repeating
For the cited Prusa procedure, repeat the pull until the filament tip is clean, has a nozzle-shaped imprint, and shows no mixed colors or dark marks. Those are signs to look for in that procedure, not a substitute for the instructions for another printer.

Check specialty nozzle compatibility first
Prusa says not to cold pull with Nozzle X; it directs users to cleaning filament instead. Purpose-made 3D printer hotend cleaning filament is another maintenance option, but it is not required for every printer. Check compatibility with both the printer and nozzle before use, and follow the product and manufacturer instructions.
For a full jam: follow the exact printer’s procedure
If filament cannot be loaded, use the manufacturer’s instructions for that model rather than improvising with a cold pull or copying another printer’s steps. For certain Prusa models, the cited full-jam guide describes heating the nozzle to a material-dependent temperature, waiting briefly for filament to soften, then using the bundled 0.3–0.35 mm needle from below. It warns not to feed the needle from above or load filament while the needle is inserted. The newer-family guide also says its acupuncture-needle method does not apply to high-flow nozzle geometries. These are specific instructions, not a cross-brand recipe; consult Prusa’s guide for the listed newer families or the guide for your own model.
Do not force the same method if it fails
If flow does not return, stop and check where the filament is stuck. The obstruction may be in the hotend or PTFE tube rather than the nozzle tip. Follow the printer’s service instructions to inspect or disassemble the path. Prusa says a damaged PTFE tube should be replaced and secured without play; a heavily used or old nozzle may be better replaced.

Protect yourself around hot parts
Clearing procedures can involve hot components. Use the printer’s own heating controls and safety instructions. Prusa’s newer-family guide warns that heated parts can cause severe burns and says not to heat the nozzle with an external heat source.
Verify that extrusion has recovered
- Load filament using the printer’s normal, model-specific procedure.
- Check that filament extrudes consistently rather than appearing thin, interrupted, or absent.
- Run an appropriate test print and look for steady lines without gaps or missing layers.
- If the flow problem remains, return to diagnosis: the blockage may be elsewhere in the filament path, or the cause may be calibration, settings, cooling, filament, or the extruder.
On the older Prusa models covered by its guide, clean filament-grinding residue from the extruder gears while keeping debris out of the PTFE opening. If you changed the nozzle or disassembled the hotend or extruder, perform the calibration recommended by the printer manufacturer.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Prevent repeat clogs by checking the whole extrusion system
Keep the hotend cool above its melt zone
Check that hotend cooling works and that the fan is not blocked. With low-temperature materials such as PLA, a hot room or enclosure can let filament soften too far above the melt zone. Prusa advises opening enclosure doors or top vents where appropriate for the printer; follow the guidance for your model and material.

Match the filament, nozzle, and slicer settings
Start with a slicer profile made for the printer, material, and nozzle. Particle-filled filaments may need a larger nozzle opening: Prusa gives woodfill as an example that may require at least a 0.6 mm nozzle and a 0.2 mm layer height. Its guidance also says carbon-fiber and Kevlar composites require a hardened nozzle. These are Prusa’s examples, not universal settings for every product; check the filament maker’s recommendations and the nozzle’s compatibility.
Store filament to limit moisture exposure
Prusa recommends keeping spools in their original bags with silica gel, in a dry area, or in a dry box. Moisture can impair printing, particularly with materials such as soluble filament, PETG, and ABS. Follow the filament maker’s storage and drying instructions for the material you use.
Maintain the extruder drive path
Clean and align the extruder gears, and set idler tension according to the printer instructions. Too little or too much tension can contribute to under-extrusion, so do not treat more pressure as an automatic fix.

Clear material transitions deliberately
When changing from a higher-temperature material to a lower-temperature one, Prusa recommends loading the new material at the previous material’s higher temperature so it can push remnants out. Use this only where the printer and material makers’ instructions allow it.
Recheck nozzle installation and first-layer clearance
Incorrect nozzle installation can cause clogs and leaks. A nozzle positioned too close to the build plate can obstruct flow. Recalibrate after relevant maintenance or moving the printer, following the applicable manual.
