How to Clone a Steam Deck SSD Without Reinstalling Games

Cloning a Steam Deck SSD is a community-reported way to carry installed games to a replacement drive, but Valve documents recovery—not cloning. Check model fit and prepare a recovery USB before swapping drives.

Yes—Steam Deck owners report cloning an SSD with disk-cloning software, which can carry an existing SteamOS installation and installed games to a replacement drive. But this is a community-reported approach, not a cloning procedure documented by Valve, and the available reports do not establish a success rate or guarantee that every tool, drive, or capacity change will work. If you want to avoid downloading installed games again, cloning is one reported option. Valve’s official alternative is SteamOS recovery: “Repair SteamOS” attempts to preserve games and personal content, while “Re-image Device” erases them.

Before you start: identify the Deck and your goal

First decide whether you are upgrading capacity or replacing a drive that may be failing. If the current SSD is unreliable, treat it as a potential data-loss risk and make a separate backup of important files before attempting a clone. A clone is not a substitute for a backup.

Confirm whether your Steam Deck is the LCD or OLED model. iFixit has separate model-specific guides for SSD replacement: LCD Steam Deck SSD Replacement and Steam Deck OLED SSD Replacement. The LCD guide identifies its internal drive as a single-sided M.2 2230 SSD. Check the appropriate guide for your model before buying parts; do not assume a replacement listed for one model fits the other.

Keep the original SSD intact until the replacement has booted and you have checked your data. If cloning fails, retaining the source drive gives you another recovery option.

How the reported cloning approach works

At a high level, cloning copies the source drive’s existing layout and content to the replacement according to the software you choose. Steam Deck owners have reported connecting drives to a computer through USB NVMe enclosures and using cloning tools. Community reports also describe saving a disk image and restoring it, or cloning directly from drive to drive. These reports establish that such workflows have been attempted; they do not verify a universal recipe or guarantee that installed games, saves, or every boot configuration will carry over in every case.

A computer-based setup may require one or two USB NVMe enclosures, depending on the connection and tool. Verify that an enclosure supports NVMe and the short 2230 drive length; an enclosure for a different drive interface or size may not work. No particular enclosure or cloning program is validated by the available reports.

Direct clone or image-and-restore?

Approach What it means What is established
Drive-to-drive clone Connect source and target drives and copy the source directly to the replacement using a cloning tool. Community reports describe this pattern; they do not establish a compatible tool, success rate, or universal procedure. Community discussion
Image and restore Save an image of the source drive, then restore it to the replacement drive. Community reports mention this pattern too, without benchmarking it against direct cloning or confirming a particular tool. Community discussion

The evidence does not show that one approach is faster, safer, or more reliable than the other. Follow the chosen tool’s instructions carefully, especially when identifying source and target disks: selecting the wrong target can overwrite the wrong drive.

Prepare the hardware and a recovery fallback

  • Replacement drive: choose an M.2 2230 NVMe SSD that is compatible with your specific Deck model. The LCD guide describes a single-sided drive; consult the correct LCD or OLED guide rather than relying on a generic listing. LCD guide · OLED guide
  • Drive connection for a computer-based clone: use a USB NVMe enclosure that explicitly supports 2230 drives. Community reports describe enclosures as a workflow category, not a tested product recommendation. Community discussion
  • Physical repair tools: the LCD iFixit guide lists Phillips #0 and #1 screwdrivers and opening picks. Check your own model’s guide for its instructions and tool needs. LCD replacement guide
  • Recovery media: Valve’s recovery instructions require a USB key of at least 8 GB. Having recovery media ready gives you an official fallback if the Deck does not boot after the swap. Steam Deck recovery instructions

Clone, swap, and check the replacement

The following sequence combines the broad workflow described in community reports with model-specific physical replacement guidance. It is not a Valve-approved cloning procedure; the cited sources do not validate any one cloning tool’s settings or every drive combination.

  1. Back up important data and prepare recovery media. Keep a separate copy of anything you cannot afford to lose. Make a SteamOS recovery USB using Valve’s instructions and a USB key of at least 8 GB.
  2. Confirm drive fit and identify both drives. Check the LCD or OLED replacement guide for your device. If using a computer and an enclosure, confirm NVMe and 2230 support. Before starting a clone or restore, verify which disk is the source and which is the target.
  3. Clone the source or create and restore an image. Use the chosen software’s own documentation for its specific steps. The reported Steam Deck workflows include both direct disk-to-disk cloning and image-and-restore; the available reports do not specify a universal utility or settings.
  4. Install the replacement using the correct repair guide. Follow the instructions for your exact LCD or OLED model. iFixit’s hardware guides cover physical replacement, not a complete software cloning procedure.
  5. Boot and verify before reusing or discarding the original. Check that the Deck starts and that the content you need is present. If the replacement does not boot or expected content is missing, stop before erasing or repurposing the original drive and use recovery options as appropriate.

If cloning does not work: choose the right recovery option

Valve documents SteamOS recovery, not SSD cloning. The recovery choices have different consequences, so read the option description before proceeding. Valve’s USB recovery key must be at least 8 GB. Steam Deck recovery instructions

Valve recovery choice Intended effect on local content When it may fit
Repair SteamOS Reinstalls SteamOS while attempting to preserve games and personal content. Consider this when trying to repair the operating system while retaining local content; preservation is an attempt, not a guarantee.
Re-image Device Wipes user information, installed games, applications, and operating systems. Use only when you accept that the device will be erased and set up again.

Valve also distinguishes rollback from factory reset in its recovery troubleshooting information: rollback can retain user data, while factory reset clears local data, including games. Those are recovery choices, not cloning methods. Steam Deck recovery troubleshooting

What cloning can—and cannot—promise

A clone aims to carry the existing drive’s layout and installed content, which is why users report it as a way to avoid downloading installed games again. The available community reports do not verify preserved saves for every game, guarantee boot success after every swap, or establish that cloning works with every drive-size change or software version. Valve’s official documentation explains recovery and re-imaging rather than endorsing cloning. For the physical swap, use the guide for your exact model; for OS recovery, follow Valve’s recovery instructions.
