Find the blocked-contacts list for your iOS version
First check which version is installed: open Settings > General > About and look at the iOS version. Apple documents different menu paths for iOS 26 and iOS 18 or earlier.

iOS 26
- Open Settings > Privacy & Security > Blocked Contacts.
- Find the person’s phone number or email address in the list and remove it from the blocked contacts.
iOS 18 or earlier
- Open Settings > Messages > Blocked Contacts, in the SMS/MMS section.
- Find the person and remove them from the list. You can also manage blocked contacts through the Phone, FaceTime, or Mail settings.

What unblocking changes
Apple says blocking someone on one device applies to Apple devices signed in to the same Apple Account. On iOS 18 and earlier, blocking or unblocking through Phone, FaceTime, Messages, or Mail applies across those four apps. Removing a person from the blocked list lets their incoming communications through; it does not guarantee that a particular message will arrive if there is a separate delivery problem.

Blocking primarily prevents incoming communication. Apple’s documented behavior allows you to make calls and send messages to a blocked contact under the applicable OS-version conditions, so being blocked does not necessarily mean the other person cannot receive your outgoing messages.
If messages still do not arrive
Confirm the address used for iMessage
A conversation may use a phone number or an Apple Account email address. Open Settings > Apps > Messages > Send & Receive and check that the phone number or email address you expect to use is selected. Also verify the recipient’s exact number or email. An iPhone or another Apple device may be set to receive or start iMessages from an Apple Account email rather than a phone number.

Check the connection and message type
iMessage uses Wi-Fi or cellular data and appears in a blue bubble. RCS, SMS, or MMS messages use carrier messaging and appear in a green bubble. If you see Not Delivered, check your network connection and try sending again. When the option is available, you can try sending as a text message instead.
For persistent iMessage problems, follow Apple’s iPhone and iPad message troubleshooting guide. Contact your carrier if the problem involves SMS, MMS, or RCS, which depend on carrier support.

If the person still appears blocked
Check whether the blocked entry is a different number or email address belonging to that person. Apple also advises that a contact may appear blocked because they share details, such as a phone number or email address, with someone you have already blocked.
