How to Use an Ultrawide Monitor with a Mac

To use an ultrawide monitor with a Mac, first check your exact Mac model and chip, then match its supported video output to the monitor’s input, native resolution and refresh rates. There is no universal Mac-to-ultrawide setup: supported resolution, refresh rate and the number of displays depend on the Mac, monitor, cable or adapter, and any other displays connected.

What to check before connecting an ultrawide monitor

Start with the specifications on both devices rather than assuming that a port or a wide-screen marketing label guarantees a particular display mode.

Identify your Mac model, chip and display limit

On your Mac, open the Apple menu and choose About This Mac to identify the model and chip. Check that exact model’s Apple specifications for its supported external-display count and the resolution and refresh-rate combinations it can drive. Apple emphasizes that simultaneous display support depends on the Mac model and each display’s resolution and refresh rate: Connect displays to your Mac.

Limits are model-specific, not simply “MacBook Air” or “MacBook Pro” limits. For example, Apple’s M5 MacBook Air guide lists one external display at up to 8K at 60 Hz, 5K at 120 Hz or 4K at 240 Hz; with two external displays, it lists up to 6K at 60 Hz or 4K at 144 Hz per display. Those figures apply to the M5 MacBook Air guide, not every MacBook Air: MacBook Air (13-inch, M5) and MacBook Air (15-inch, M5) — Technical Specifications.

Apple’s MacBook Pro specifications likewise list limits by chip and configuration; its M5 MacBook Pro entry, for example, supports up to two external displays, with two-display configurations up to 6K at 60 Hz or 4K at 144 Hz: MacBook Pro — Technical Specifications. If you have another Mac family or an older model, use that model’s own Apple specifications. Count any other external monitors in the setup when checking the limit.

Check the monitor’s specifications

Look up the ultrawide monitor’s native resolution, supported refresh rates and available inputs in its manual or manufacturer specifications. Check the maximum resolution and refresh rate supported through the particular input you plan to use: a monitor may not offer every advertised mode through every port.

Match the Mac output, monitor input and cable

Identify the Mac’s available video ports and choose a compatible monitor input. Macs connect through supported video connections such as HDMI or Thunderbolt, but the ports vary by model. Use the Mac and monitor documentation to select a cable or adapter rated for your intended resolution and refresh rate; an unsupported connection can limit the available mode or leave the screen blank. Apple’s connection guidance is at Connect displays to your Mac, and its troubleshooting steps explain how cables and adapters can affect resolution and refresh rate: If your external display is dark or low resolution.

How do I connect an ultrawide monitor to a Mac?

  1. Confirm compatibility: Check the Mac’s external-display specifications and the monitor’s input-specific modes. Include other connected displays in the Mac’s display-count limit.
  2. Connect the video cable: Connect a supported Mac output to the matching monitor input with the appropriate cable or adapter. If you are using a dock or hub, check that it supports the same display mode.
  3. Turn on the monitor: Connect its power, switch it on, and select the input that matches the cable.
  4. Open display settings: On the Mac, choose Apple menu > System Settings > Displays. Select the ultrawide and choose from the resolution and refresh-rate options shown. Apple’s setup instructions are in Connect displays to your Mac.
  5. Choose how the screens work together: Set the display arrangement to match the monitors’ physical positions. Choose mirroring if you want the same image on both screens, or use an extended desktop to give yourself additional workspace. The available controls depend on the Mac and connected displays.

How do I set an ultrawide monitor’s resolution and refresh rate?

Open Apple menu > System Settings > Displays, select the ultrawide, and choose an available resolution and refresh rate. The menu shows options supported by the current Mac, monitor, connection and display setup; an option missing from the menu is not necessarily enabled by changing a setting elsewhere.

Start with native resolution

Try the monitor’s native resolution first. It generally gives the sharpest image because the display can map the signal to its physical pixels directly. If text or interface elements are too small, try a scaled resolution that makes them more comfortable to read or gives you a more useful workspace. Scaling changes how macOS presents the desktop, and the available choices vary with the hardware and connection.

Recheck refresh rate and HDR after scaling

After changing resolution, confirm that the refresh rate is still the one you want. Apple notes that enabling scaled resolutions above a display’s native resolution may affect some refresh-rate or HDR options. The modes available for your setup are shown in Displays settings; see Apple’s guidance on display resolution and refresh-rate troubleshooting.

How should I choose a cable, adapter or dock?

Choose a connection based on the display mode you actually want, not just on whether the plug fits. Confirm that the Mac’s output, the monitor’s selected input and every cable or adapter in between support the intended resolution and refresh rate. If you use a dock or hub, it is another part of that signal path and must also support the mode.

  • Mac output: Check the ports on your exact Mac model and its supported display specifications.
  • Monitor input: Check which of its inputs supports the intended resolution and refresh rate.
  • Cable or adapter: Verify its supported video capabilities against both ends of the connection.
  • Dock or hub: If present, verify its display limits; test without it if the monitor behaves unexpectedly.
  • Other displays: Check the Mac’s simultaneous-display limit for the full configuration, not only the ultrawide by itself.

Apple’s setup and troubleshooting pages explain the role of compatible connections, but do not certify particular third-party ultrawide monitors, cables, adapters or docks. Check the manufacturers’ specifications for the exact products in your setup.

Why is my Mac showing a lower resolution or refresh rate?

A lower-than-expected mode usually means one part of the setup does not support the target combination, or macOS is using a different setting. Work through the connection systematically rather than assuming the monitor itself is faulty.

  1. Check the monitor: Confirm it is powered on and set to the input used by the Mac.
  2. Check the Mac’s supported mode: Verify that the exact Mac model supports the desired resolution and refresh rate with the number of displays connected.
  3. Check the monitor’s input: Make sure the chosen input supports the target mode.
  4. Check the whole signal path: Confirm the cable, adapter and any dock or hub support the mode. Connect the monitor directly to the Mac temporarily to see whether the dock or hub is limiting output.
  5. Review Displays settings: Open Apple menu > System Settings > Displays and check the selected resolution and refresh rate. If you changed scaling, check the options again.
  6. Detect the display: In Displays settings, hold the Option key to reveal Detect Displays, then select it.
  7. Reconnect and update: Disconnect and reconnect the monitor. If it is still not detected or available modes remain limited, restart the Mac and install current macOS updates. Apple’s troubleshooting guide is If your external display is dark or low resolution.

Can I use an ultrawide MacBook with the lid closed?

Yes, when the MacBook and setup support closed-display use: connect the Mac to power and use an external keyboard and mouse. Closing the lid is not a general way to increase the Mac’s supported external-display count; check the specifications for the exact model and chip before planning a multi-display arrangement.

Mirroring or extended desktop: which should I use?

  • Extended desktop: Use the ultrawide as extra workspace alongside the Mac’s built-in display or another monitor. Arrange the displays in System Settings so the pointer moves between them in the expected direction.
  • Mirroring: Use this when you want the external monitor to show the same content as another display. Available resolution and refresh-rate choices can depend on the combined display setup.

Choose the mode in Apple menu > System Settings > Displays. The controls shown depend on the Mac and the displays connected.
