For ordinary form entry, use frame.locator(selector).fill(text); use frame.type() when you specifically need per-character keyboard/input events or a delay.
Fill a field inside an iframe
An iframe’s document is a separate Puppeteer Frame. A locator on the page’s main document does not automatically search inside that child document. Find the intended frame, then create the locator from the frame itself:

const frame = page.frames().find(frame => frame.url().includes('/embedded-form'));
if (!frame) throw new Error('Target iframe was not found');
await frame.locator('textarea[name="message"]').fill('Hello from Puppeteer');
Replace /embedded-form and the selector with identifying values from the page. The example uses page.frames() to locate the frame by URL and frame.locator() to find a textarea within it. Puppeteer’s Frame class documentation describes frame traversal and locator support.
Choose and identify the right frame
Use a distinctive frame URL when it is stable. If the page exposes a useful iframe name or id, that may be a better identifier; Puppeteer’s frame documentation also shows inspecting frame elements for a name. When several frames could match, add conditions so the code selects the intended one rather than whichever appears first.
#1 Best Overall
Frames can attach, navigate, or detach as the page runs. If the iframe is created asynchronously, wait for it to appear or navigate before looking it up, and handle the possibility that a frame disappears while your script is using it. The frame API documents frame lifecycle events and navigation methods.
Use fill() for normal form entry
Puppeteer’s page interactions guide, version 25.12.0, recommends locators for selecting and interacting with elements. A locator waits for the element to be present and in an appropriate state; fill() chooses a suitable way to populate supported input types. The target must meet the documented conditions, including being in the viewport, visible, enabled, and having stable bounds. If these conditions are not met in time, the operation can time out.

For a standard text input or textarea, use:
await frame.locator('input[name="email"]').fill('[email protected]');
Use type() when keyboard events matter
Use Frame.type() when the task depends on typing one character at a time or adding a delay between characters. The API reference, version 25.11.0, says it emits keydown, keypress/input, and keyup for each character. The optional delay is in milliseconds and defaults to zero.

await frame.type('input[name="email"]', '[email protected]', { delay: 40 });
For special keys such as Control or ArrowDown, use Keyboard.press() rather than passing the key as ordinary text. If multiple elements match the selector, Frame.type() types into the first match, so make the selector unique when the target matters.
Pick the interaction that matches the job
| Need | Use | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Set text in a standard field | frame.locator(selector).fill(text) |
Recommended locator interaction; fill chooses an appropriate input method and observes locator preconditions. |
| Trigger per-character input events or introduce a delay | frame.type(selector, text, {delay}) |
Emits keyboard/input events for each character; delay is optional and measured in milliseconds. |
| Press a special key | Keyboard.press(key) |
The Frame.type reference directs special keys to Keyboard.press(). |
Troubleshoot frame and input failures
- Frame not found: Inspect
page.frames()and verify the frame URL or its name/id. If the iframe loads later, wait for attachment or navigation before selecting it. - Input selector not found: Run the input selector against the target
Frame, not the main page, and check that the selector describes an element in the iframe document. - More than one field matches: Narrow the selector.
Frame.type()uses the first matching element, which may not be the intended field. - Locator times out: Check whether the field exists and whether it is visible, enabled, in the viewport, and stable enough for the locator operation.
- The page reacts differently to filled text: If the workflow depends on character-by-character events or timing, use
Frame.type()instead offill(). - A special key is needed: Call
Keyboard.press()for keys such as Control or ArrowDown.
The appropriate fix for a particular embedded third-party frame depends on that page’s behavior; these general APIs alone do not establish a site-specific cause.

If you need an image or PDF of a page rather than text entered into its iframe, ScreenshotNeo offers a one-request screenshot API. It does not type into iframe fields; use Puppeteer above when form interaction is the goal.
