The selector is evaluated inside that frame—not in the parent page—so first identify the right frame rather than assuming it is the first one.
Type text into a frame
Use page.frames() to locate the frame, then call its frame-level waitForSelector() and type() methods:

await frame.type('input[name="message"]', 'Hello from Puppeteer');This is illustrative: replace widget with a URL fragment that identifies the intended frame, and replace the selector and text with values for the page you are automating. The code assumes page is an existing Puppeteer page.
Identify the correct frame
A page can contain multiple frames, and frames can be nested. Do not rely on a fixed position such as page.frames()[1] unless you have a reason to know that position is stable. Instead, inspect the frame tree and match a property that distinguishes the target.

Match by URL
The example above searches each frame’s URL. Use a distinctive part of the actual frame URL; a broad fragment can accidentally match the wrong frame. If the frame is not present yet when you search, wait until it appears or repeat the lookup after the page has loaded.
Match by iframe name
If the frame’s name is known, inspect the page’s iframe elements and their name attributes, then select the corresponding Frame. This avoids treating the first child frame as the target when a page contains several.

Nested frames
For an iframe inside another iframe, identify the frame that directly contains the target field. Querying the parent page or the outer frame will not make a selector search descend automatically into a nested frame.

Choose the right typing API

Frame.type(selector, text, options?) returns a promise; await it before proceeding. For each character, Puppeteer sends keydown, keypress/input, and keyup events. Its optional delay is the interval between key presses in milliseconds and defaults to 0.

await frame.type('input[name="message"]', 'Hello', { delay: 80 });Use a delay only when slower character-by-character entry is useful. It does not make a selector target a different frame, and it does not guarantee that a site’s validation or application logic will accept the resulting input.
Common problems and fixes
- “Target frame not found.” The matching condition may not describe the iframe URL, or the iframe may not exist yet. Inspect the page’s frames and verify the distinguishing property before typing.
- The selector is not found. Confirm it belongs to the frame you selected, then wait for that selector using
frame.waitForSelector(). A selector for content in the parent page or another frame will not match. - Text goes into the wrong field. Check that both the selected frame and selector identify the intended field.
frame.type()uses the first matching element in that frame. - Special keys do not behave like text. Use
Keyboard.press()for keys such as Control or ArrowDown;Keyboard.type()is for text sent to the currently focused element. - The page receives input but does not accept it. Puppeteer’s documented event sequence does not establish how a particular site’s validation or application logic will respond. Confirm the field’s expected behavior on that site rather than assuming that typing alone submits or validates the value.
Version considerations
Puppeteer’s reference pages have shown different version labels for these APIs: Frame.type() and Keyboard.type() were labeled 25.9.0, while the Frame class page was labeled 25.12.0. These labels do not mean every installed package uses the same version. If a method or option differs in your project, check the types and documentation for the Puppeteer version you have installed.
