To type a standalone tilde (~), use the key sequence assigned by your active keyboard layout; there is no single shortcut that works across every device and layout. First check whether you need the punctuation mark ~ or a letter with a tilde accent, such as ñ. The accent shortcuts below make accented letters, not a standalone tilde.
Standalone tilde or accented letter?
A tilde typed by itself is punctuation: ~. In letters such as ã, ñ, and õ, the tilde is a diacritic attached to a letter. The way to enter one does not necessarily enter the other.

Before trying a shortcut, identify both the output you want and the keyboard layout currently selected. A key’s output can change when the software layout differs from the physical keyboard.

To switch between installed layouts, press Windows logo key + Space and select the intended layout. If it is not installed, open Settings > Time & language > Language (or Language & region, depending on your Windows version), choose the language’s options, and add a keyboard under Keyboards. Microsoft documents these layout steps at Manage the input and display language settings in Windows.

Once the intended layout is active, use the key or key combination assigned to the tilde on that layout. If the result is unexpected, check the selected layout before assuming the keyboard is malfunctioning.
Chromebook: US International accent sequences
Google’s instructions for the English (US) with International keyboard layout describe Shift + backtick, followed by a letter, as a way to enter a tilde-accented letter. Google separately lists AltGr + n for ñ and notes that AltGr is the right Alt key. These are diacritic instructions, not a documented general shortcut for typing a standalone ~. If you are using a different Chromebook input method, check which one is selected in Chromebook settings and switch to the intended configured method. Do not assume the US International combinations apply to every layout.

In Word, press Ctrl + Shift + ~, release the keys, then type the letter to make ã, ñ, or õ. This is an accent shortcut; it does not serve as a general shortcut for a bare tilde. Microsoft also documents character-code entry in Word: hexadecimal Unicode code followed by Alt + X, or numeric ANSI entry using the numeric keypad with Num Lock on. These are Word methods, not universal Windows text-entry shortcuts. On a laptop without a separate numeric keypad, Microsoft points to Insert > Symbol > More Symbols for most accented characters. Mac: verify the active input source
The available documentation does not establish a current Mac shortcut for a standalone tilde that applies across keyboard layouts. The combination depends on the active input source. Check Apple’s guidance for your macOS version and selected input source rather than relying on a shortcut meant for another layout.

Troubleshoot an unexpected character
- Decide what you need: a standalone
~or an accented letter such asñ. - Check the physical keyboard and selected software layout: a mismatch can make a familiar key produce a different character.
- On Windows, select or add the intended layout: use Windows logo key + Space to switch among installed layouts, or add one through Settings.
- On Chromebook, confirm the input method: the cited Shift + backtick sequence is specific to US International accent entry.
- In Word, use the accent shortcut only for an accented letter: Ctrl + Shift + ~, release, then type the letter.
