How to Reveal Mac Wi‑Fi Details and Open Wireless Diagnostics

The Mac’s Option-click Wi‑Fi menu reveals current connection details. Wireless Diagnostics is a separate built-in tool that analyzes the connection and reports detected issues.

To see more than the network name on a Mac, hold Option while clicking the Wi‑Fi status menu in the menu bar. The expanded menu shows details about the current connection; for a separate analysis, choose Open Wireless Diagnostics from that same menu.

How to view your Mac’s current Wi‑Fi details

  1. Connect to the Wi‑Fi network you want to inspect, if possible.
  2. Hold the Option key and click the Wi‑Fi status menu in the menu bar.
  3. Read the connection information displayed below the connected network. Apple lists details such as the IP address, router address, channel, frequency or band, security standard, and 802.11 protocol. Apple’s guide to the Wi‑Fi status menu describes the available information.

What the information can—and cannot—tell you

The menu is a snapshot of connection details, not a Wi‑Fi health score. For example, it can show the channel, frequency or band, and protocol in use, alongside addressing and security information. Apple’s guide does not set thresholds for judging these values, so a displayed channel or protocol alone does not establish that the connection is good or bad.

Use the details as clues to share with an IT or network-support person, or to identify which network and connection you are inspecting. The menu displays information; it does not repair the connection.

Run Wireless Diagnostics for a separate analysis

  1. Hold Option and click the Wi‑Fi status menu.
  2. Choose Open Wireless Diagnostics and follow the on-screen instructions.
  3. Review the Summary pane and select its Info buttons for additional details.

Wireless Diagnostics analyzes the connection and reports detected issues and possible solutions. Apple states, “Wireless Diagnostics doesn’t change your network settings.” It creates a compressed support file in /var/tmp; if a network administrator, service provider, or IT support person asks for it, look there for a file named WirelessDiagnostics…tar.gz. What to check if the connection still fails

A diagnostic report may help narrow down a problem, but it is not a guarantee that the connection will be fixed. Apple’s troubleshooting guidance suggests checking these possibilities:

  • Check for Wi‑Fi Recommendations when available. Apple notes that they are unavailable for personal hotspots and some enterprise security protocols, including WPA Enterprise and WPA2 Enterprise.
  • Make sure the router’s firmware is current, following the router maker’s instructions.
  • Consider whether a VPN or security software could be affecting the connection.
  • Try another Wi‑Fi network. If the Mac works on another network, ask the internet service provider or network administrator whether the original network has an outage or other issue.

“Hidden Wi‑Fi menu” is not a hidden network

Here, “hidden” means the Option-click menu is less obvious than the ordinary Wi‑Fi menu. A hidden Wi‑Fi network is a different thing: its name is not broadcast. Joining one requires its network name and relevant security information. Apple explains this distinction in its guide to joining a hidden Wi‑Fi network on Mac.
