Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →You can turn written content into narrated audio without recording your own voice by using text-to-speech (TTS): you supply the text, pick a voice, generate speech, and export the result as an audio file, usually MP3. Microsoft documents a no-code route through Speech Studio’s Audio Content Creation tool. If you need to convert long texts repeatedly or build the conversion into a publishing process, Google Cloud Text-to-Speech and Amazon Polly are documented cloud services that work through their APIs. Which one fits depends on your technical comfort, the voices and languages you need, the file format your player requires, how much control you need over pronunciation, and the usage terms that apply to the audio you publish.
What text-to-speech does and what it does not do
Text-to-speech software reads text aloud using a synthesized voice. Google describes its service as converting text into human-like speech, and Amazon Polly describes its service as synthesizing text into speech; in both cases the output is generated from the words you provide rather than from a recording of a person reading them. That makes TTS practical for articles, study notes, newsletters, chapters, and scripts when you do not want to narrate them yourself.

It also means the quality of the audio depends heavily on the input. The generated speech follows the text as supplied, so a misspelled name, an unexpanded abbreviation, or an ambiguous number may be read in a way you did not intend. Plan to check the output, not just the settings.

When a cloud API is the better fit
If you are converting many documents, want the same settings applied every time, or need to insert your own pronunciation markup, a cloud API is more suitable. Google and Amazon both accept SSML, which gives you tags for pronunciation and delivery. The cost of that flexibility is cloud setup: an account, credentials, and some scripting. Google’s public count of 380+ voices across 75+ languages and variants is a vendor-published figure from its product page, accessed in 2026; it may change and is not an independent measurement.

Step-by-step workflow
- Prepare the text. Correct spelling, add paragraph breaks where you want pauses, and decide how to handle abbreviations, names, and numbers. Spell out “Dr.” as “Doctor” or “WHO” as “World Health Organization” if the voice would otherwise read it awkwardly.
- Choose the workflow. Use Speech Studio’s Audio Content Creation tool for a no-code conversion. For a developer-oriented route, use Google Cloud Text-to-Speech or Amazon Polly and send the text through their APIs.
- Select the language and voice. Choose the language variant that matches your text, then generate a short sample. Listen for how the voice handles names, acronyms, punctuation, and transitions between paragraphs.
- Adjust speech settings where available. In Google’s API, voice selection and controls for pitch, volume, speaking rate, and sample rate are documented. In Amazon Polly, SSML controls for pronunciation, volume, pitch, and speech rate are documented. Make small changes and re-listen; large changes to rate or pitch often sound unnatural.
- Generate and export. Export in a format your player or podcast host accepts. MP3 is the format shown in Microsoft’s quickstart and is supported by both Google and Amazon.
- Listen to the complete file. Check the whole recording, not only the first minute. Correct the source text or the pronunciation markup and regenerate only the affected sections where the tool allows it.
Using SSML to fix pronunciation
Speech Synthesis Markup Language (SSML) is an XML-based markup that lets you control how text is spoken. Google’s basics page notes that SSML can be supplied in place of raw text, and Amazon Polly documents SSML for pronunciation and delivery. A common fix is to tell the voice what an abbreviation means. For example:

- Positionable design: Pivot the mic in relation to the sound source to optimize your sound quality thanks to the adjustable desktop stand and track your voice in real time with no-latency monitoring
<speak>The report was released by the WHO this morning.</speak>
The tags a given service accepts vary, so check each provider’s SSML reference before you rely on a particular tag. Keep the markup in your source file so that you can regenerate the audio later.
File formats and where the audio will play
Choose the format before you generate, because re-exporting can mean regenerating the whole file. The documented options are:

The terms for the audio itself depend on the provider and your plan. ElevenLabs states on its product page that paid plans include commercial usage rights for generated audio under its terms and prohibited-use policy, while its free plan is for personal, non-commercial use and requires attribution. Google states that use of its generated audio must comply with Google Cloud terms and applicable law. Read the current terms of whichever service you use at the time you publish, because these conditions can change.
Choosing among the options
- Choose Speech Studio if you need a single article or a short script converted once, and you do not want to write code.
- Choose Google Cloud Text-to-Speech if you want an API, need to control rate, pitch, or sample rate, and are comfortable with cloud setup.
- Choose Amazon Polly if you want an API with plain-text or SSML input and need Ogg Vorbis or PCM output in addition to MP3.
- Consider ElevenLabs if voice character is your main concern, provided you check the plan terms that match your use, especially if the audio is commercial.
- Do not rely on vendor claims about which voice sounds best. The material available for this guide consists of vendor documentation, not an independent listening test. Judge the voices yourself using a passage from your own text.
Before you publish, confirm that the audio is correct from start to finish, that the format matches your platform, and that you hold the rights to the text and the terms for the audio.
