To turn it off, choose a different destination: the earpiece (handset) or a connected headset. The button is labeled Audio on iPhone, Speaker in Google Phone, and Sound in Google Voice. Below are the exact paths for each, plus what to check when a call won’t go where you want.
What speaker mode actually is
Speakerphone is an audio destination for a live call. It decides where the sound comes out. It is not a volume setting. Your call can go to the earpiece, the built-in speaker, or a connected device such as a Bluetooth headset. This guide covers speakerphone during phone or calling-app conversations. It does not cover Bluetooth music speakers or general media output.

The earpiece is the most private option. Speakerphone and external devices are better for hands-free use.

Switch speaker on or off during a call
- While on a call, tap Audio.
- Pick the iPhone speaker to talk hands-free.
- To go back to handset audio, or to use a connected accessory, tap Audio again and pick that destination.
Apple’s guide describes this as choosing an audio destination, including the speaker and Bluetooth devices (Apple Support: While on a call on iPhone).

Set a default for all calls
Go to Settings > Accessibility > Touch > Call Audio Routing and choose an audio destination. This sets the default for phone and FaceTime calls. It is separate from changing the route for a single call (Apple Support: Route and automatically answer calls on iPhone).
Android with Google Phone
During a call, tap Speaker. It switches among the earpiece, speakerphone, and a connected Bluetooth headset. To move audio off speakerphone, tap it again or choose another destination. Screen layout can vary by manufacturer and app version (Google Support: Make and receive phone calls).

Google Voice
Tap Sound during the call. With no external device connected, audio toggles between the earpiece speaker and speakerphone. If an external device is connected, the app lists the available devices. Your phone may also pick a newly connected device on its own (Google Support: Change your microphone or speakers – Android).
Samsung Galaxy: answer on speaker by default
Samsung offers an optional setting. In the Phone app, go to More options > Settings > Answering and ending calls and turn on Answer using speaker. Samsung says calls are then answered on speaker when no headphone or Bluetooth device is connected. This controls how calls start. It does not replace the in-call speaker button. Availability depends on model and software version (Samsung Support: Samsung Phone app).

If speaker mode seems stuck or unavailable
- Reopen the Audio, Speaker, or Sound menu and check which destination is selected. The call may be going to a Bluetooth headset or another external device.
- Disconnect or turn off that device if you want sound from the phone. Samsung lists external devices and redirected audio as possible reasons the phone speaker doesn’t behave as expected (Samsung Support: Speaker does not work properly).
- Make sure you’re on the call screen of the app that placed the call. Control names differ between apps, such as Speaker in Google Phone and Sound in Google Voice.
- On a Samsung Galaxy where calls always start on speaker, check whether Answer using speaker is enabled.
These steps come from vendor instructions. Labels and menu positions can differ by device and software version.
