How to Connect a Router to a Phone Hotspot: Wi-Fi and USB Methods

Routers with WISP, Hotspot or Wi-Fi-as-WAN mode can share a phone's connection. Here are the steps, USB option, mode differences and fixes.

A router can share your phone’s internet connection, but only if it has a suitable upstream mode. For a wireless hotspot, look for WISP, Wi-Fi as WAN, Hotspot or a similar name. The router then joins the phone’s hotspot and broadcasts its own network, so your other devices can connect over Wi-Fi or Ethernet. Some routers also support USB tethering. Mode names and menus differ by model and hardware revision, so check yours first.

Connect the router to the hotspot over Wi-Fi

  1. Check the router before changing settings. Find the exact model and hardware revision on the label or management page. The specifications or manual must list a mode that uses Wi-Fi as the internet source, such as WISP, Hotspot or Wi-Fi as WAN. Not all routers offer these modes (TP-Link, operation modes).
  2. Turn on the phone hotspot. Make sure cellular data is on, and note the hotspot name and password. Android offers Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and USB tethering, and menus vary by version (Google Android Help).
  3. Connect a setup device to the router. Use the router’s default Wi-Fi or an Ethernet cable, following its setup guide. TP-Link’s example takes the initial Wi-Fi credentials from the router label and uses its management page for Quick Setup (TP-Link travel router guide).
  4. Select the wireless upstream mode. In the management interface, choose Hotspot/WISP, Repeater or the manufacturer’s equivalent. Scan for the phone’s hotspot name, select it and enter its password. The TP-Link procedure then has you configure the local Wi-Fi network your other devices will join.
  5. Set the local network details and reconnect. You can keep the default local SSID and password or set your own where supported. If setup changes the Wi-Fi settings, reconnect your setup device to the router’s local network.
  6. Test a client device. Connect another device to the router’s Wi-Fi or a LAN port and confirm it reaches the internet. Everything still depends on the phone’s cellular service, your data allowance and your carrier’s tethering terms.

Alternative: USB tethering

Use this only when the router’s specifications or manual explicitly support smartphone USB tethering. ASUS documents it for the RT-AX50 Go (page last updated 2025-08-28). For Android, plug the phone into the router’s USB port and enable USB tethering in the phone’s network settings. For iPhone, set up Personal Hotspot, connect by USB and accept the Trust prompt if one appears (ASUS FAQ). That shows one model’s support. It does not mean every router or phone works this way, and a USB port alone is not enough, because the function must be in the firmware.

Which mode name means what

Mode What it does
Hotspot/WISP or Wi-Fi as WAN The router connects wirelessly to an upstream network and shares it with its own clients. This is the mode you want. TP-Link: “In Hotspot/WISP mode, it can connect to a public wireless network and share that connection with its clients.”
Access point Typically turns a wired internet connection into Wi-Fi. By itself it does not make a standard router join a phone’s hotspot.
Client mode Makes the router a wireless adapter for a wired device, such as a TV with Ethernet. It does not necessarily share Wi-Fi to the router’s own clients.
Repeater Usage varies. GL.iNet’s Repeater function connects to an existing wireless network in WISP mode, creates its own subnet and acts as a firewall (GL.iNet docs). Read the specific router’s documentation.

Troubleshooting

The phone hotspot is missing from the scan

Check whether the router supports the hotspot’s band and channel. GL.iNet says its scan shows only the channels that router supports, so unsupported ones may not appear. For an iPhone Personal Hotspot on a GL.iNet router, its guide says to keep the iPhone screen unlocked so it keeps transmitting Wi-Fi beacons. That is device-specific guidance, not a universal iPhone rule. Also confirm the hotspot is on, move the phone close during setup and recheck the password.

Your setup device lost its connection

If you were configuring over Wi-Fi and changed the local Wi-Fi settings, reconnect to the router’s new SSID.

Wireless setup is unreliable

Check whether both the phone and the router support USB tethering. The wired route may be steadier, but only on supported hardware.

Connected, but no internet

Verify that mobile data is working and that your plan allows tethering. Google warns that some carriers limit tethering or charge extra.

Limits and practical notes

  • Android’s general guidance says a phone’s Wi-Fi hotspot can serve up to 10 other devices (Google Android Help; no year given on the page). That is a phone limit, not the number a router can serve. In wireless mode the phone sees only the router as a client.
  • Sustained hotspot use drains the battery. Motorola advises plugging the phone in during use (Motorola Support).
  • The sources reviewed give no comparable speed, range or battery figures for router-over-hotspot setups, so none are quoted here.

Choosing hardware

If your current router lacks WISP or Hotspot mode, a travel router that documents it is the most natural fit, as TP-Link and GL.iNet both do. Verify the exact model and hardware version in the manufacturer’s specifications. A USB data cable matters only if the router supports USB tethering and the ports match.
