To change predictive text on most Galaxy phones, open Settings > General management > Samsung Keyboard settings > Predictive text, then switch it on or off for the input language you use. You can also open Samsung Keyboard’s settings from its toolbar while typing. Menu labels and locations vary by software version and region.
What predictive text does
Samsung Keyboard’s predictive text displays word suggestions as you type. It does not automatically replace what you have entered: you choose a suggestion when you want to use it. Samsung describes the feature as one that “will suggest words for you as you are typing.” Samsung’s US guide to predictive text and typing settings explains the related controls.

Turn predictive text on or off
- Open Settings.
- Tap General management > Samsung Keyboard settings.
- Tap Predictive text.
- Switch the setting on or off for the input language you want to change.
If Samsung Keyboard is open, tap its settings icon to reach the keyboard settings. On older software, look for a similar option under paths such as Language and input > On-screen keyboard > Samsung Keyboard > Smart typing or Language and input > Samsung Keyboard > Predictive text. These are alternate menu layouts, not a single path that applies to every Galaxy device. Samsung notes that some options may not be available on older devices or operating systems. Samsung UK’s instructions also describe switching predictive text off or on in Samsung Keyboard settings.

Manage words Samsung Keyboard has learned
Suggestions may include words you have used before. Samsung says a newly typed word is saved as learned when you type it for the first time and tap the spacebar. It may then appear in the suggestion bar when you type it again.

Remove one suggestion
- Type until the unwanted learned word appears in the suggestion bar.
- Touch and hold the suggestion.
- Confirm that you want to remove it when prompted.
Erase personalized predictions
For a broader reset, open Samsung Keyboard settings and look for Reset to default settings > Erase personalized predictions. Depending on your software and locale, the option may instead be labeled Clear personalised data. This clears personalized learning more broadly than removing a single suggestion. Create a text shortcut
A text shortcut lets you type a short trigger and select a saved longer phrase from the predictive bar.

- Open Samsung Keyboard settings and tap Text shortcuts. On some versions, this is under More typing options.
- Tap +.
- Enter the shortcut and the expanded phrase, then add the shortcut.
- Type the shortcut in a text field and tap the expanded phrase when it appears in the predictive bar.
Predictive text, Auto replace, and spell check are different
Samsung lists these as separate keyboard settings. Their practical difference is whether the keyboard offers a choice, changes text, or flags a possible spelling problem.

- Auto replace: completes or replaces the current word with a likely word. Samsung says the selected word can be inserted with the spacebar or Enter key.
- Auto spell check: underlines misspelled words and suggests likely corrections.
Auto capitalization, spacing, and punctuation are also separate settings. Turning off predictive text does not mean you have turned off every other typing aid.

When the menu or suggestions differ
Menus have moved or an option is missing
Menu names and locations depend on the device’s software and region. Use Settings search for “Samsung Keyboard” or “Predictive text” if the listed path does not match your screen. Older devices may not offer every current option.
Japanese input on Android 16 or later
Samsung Japan’s guidance, updated 17 September 2026, says predictive text for Japanese cannot be turned off on Android 16 or later. This exception is specifically about Japanese input and should not be generalized to other languages or Galaxy users. Samsung Japan’s predictive-text guidance provides the regional detail.

Suggestions disappeared after an update
In a Samsung Community thread created 28 November 2025, a user reported missing suggestions after a One UI 8 update. A community moderator suggested enabling the preferred language under Settings > General management > Samsung Keyboard settings > Predictive text so its language pack could download. This is a suggestion for that reported case, not a guaranteed fix for every device or update. Read the Samsung Community thread.
