Usually, yes: a healthy, suitable 450W power supply clears NVIDIA’s 400W recommended system-power figure for the reference GeForce GTX 960. What NVIDIA’s GTX 960 power figures mean
NVIDIA lists the reference GTX 960 at 120W graphics-card power and recommends a 400W power supply for the system. That recommendation is based on a PC configured with an Intel Core i7 3.2 GHz processor; NVIDIA notes that a pre-built system may need less power depending on its configuration. At 450W, a PSU is 50W above NVIDIA’s stated reference system recommendation. That makes 450W a reasonable starting point for a typical build, but it does not show how much usable power an older or damaged PSU can deliver, or whether the unit has the connections the card needs.

Check the exact GTX 960 model and connector
NVIDIA’s reference specification calls for one 6-pin supplementary power connector. The title does not identify a specific board-partner card, and a partner model may have different requirements. Before buying or installing a card, identify its exact model or SKU and check the manufacturer’s specification for its power recommendation and connector.

How to check whether your 450W PSU is suitable
- Identify the PSU. Read its label for the manufacturer and exact model, then consult that model’s documentation. A 450W rating by itself does not establish the unit’s condition or suitability.
- Check its condition. Consider the PSU’s age and known condition. Do not treat an old, damaged, or otherwise questionable unit as adequate solely because its label says 450W.
- Confirm the PCIe power lead. Match the PSU’s available PCIe connector to the exact GTX 960 model’s requirement. The reference card calls for one 6-pin connector; do not assume the same for every variant.
- Account for the whole computer. The PSU supplies all system components, not just the graphics card. Compare the complete system configuration with the manufacturer’s power guidance rather than treating the GPU’s 120W figure as the system’s total draw.
If the PSU does not have the required connector
Look for a PSU whose documentation confirms the correct native PCIe connector for your card. For example, Corsair’s official CV450 specification lists 450W output and one PCIe 8-pin (6+2) cable. A 6+2-pin connector can be used as a 6-pin connection; follow the documentation for both the PSU and graphics card. This is an example of a product category, not a universal recommendation, and wattage alone does not establish that any PSU is suitable.
Avoid improvised power adapters unless the GPU and PSU manufacturers provide guidance for the exact models. If the connector, PSU model, or card requirement is uncertain, verify those details before connecting power.
