While the movie is playing, open the player’s playback controls and choose its captions, subtitles, audio, or language menu. Turn on the subtitle track you want and, separately, select a spoken-language track if one is available. The exact button or remote action differs by streaming service and device, and not every movie includes every language.
How to find subtitle and audio controls
Start playback, then reveal the controls: tap or click the video, press a playback or arrow button on a remote, or bring up the player timeline. Look for a speech-bubble, captions, subtitles, audio, or language control. In some apps, the choices are grouped under a settings icon.

Subtitle or caption settings change the text displayed on screen; audio or language settings change the spoken track. They are often separate selections, so choose each one you want. The labels and available tracks depend on the app, device, and title.
Steps for popular streaming services
Netflix
- Start the movie. On a phone or tablet, tap the screen; on a computer, click it. On many TVs, players, cable boxes, and game systems, press the up or down arrow on the remote. On Apple TV, swipe up or press up.
- Select Audio & Subtitles.
- Choose the subtitle and audio options you want. Select Other to see additional listed choices, if shown.
Netflix’s available languages depend on the title. Some foreign-language dialogue may still trigger subtitles when subtitle settings are off. Most Kids titles watched from an adult profile do not save subtitle or audio preferences. See Netflix’s instructions for subtitles, captions, and audio language.

On Roku, press the Star button during playback to open the streaming app’s menu for captions, sound, and language. You can also check Roku’s device-level caption option at Settings > Accessibility > Captions mode. Some apps manage captions themselves and ignore the Roku setting; Roku notes, “Some apps use their own captions and skip the setting on your Roku device.” In that case, turn captions on inside the app. See Roku’s troubleshooting guidance for streaming app features.

If a language is missing or the setting does not work
- The controls are hidden: tap or click the video, press the remote’s playback or arrow control, or bring up the timeline. The gesture varies by app and device.
- The language is not listed: check the title’s details page, then check the app’s language setting where available. Options may differ by title, region, profile, and device.
- Captions do not appear on Roku: turn them on in the streaming app during playback, because a Roku-wide setting may not control an app-managed caption track.
- The audio is wrong on Roku: open the app’s sound or language menu during playback and select another available track.
- The problem persists: try another title, then another app or device. If the issue occurs only in one app, contact that streaming service; if it follows the device across apps, check its accessibility and playback settings.
