| Device | Screen reader | Fastest way on | Settings route |
|---|---|---|---|
| Windows 10 and 11 | Narrator | Ctrl + Windows logo key + Enter | Settings > Accessibility > Narrator |
| iPhone | VoiceOver | Ask Siri, use Control Center (if added), or use the Accessibility Shortcut (if configured) | Settings > Accessibility > VoiceOver |

| Android phone or tablet | TalkBack | Hold both volume keys during setup; say “Turn on TalkBack” to Google Assistant if it’s set up | Settings > Accessibility > TalkBack > Use TalkBack |

Windows 10 and 11: Narrator
Turn it on
- Shortcut: press Ctrl + Windows logo key + Enter. Narrator is part of Windows, so there’s nothing to install.
- Settings: open Settings > Accessibility > Narrator and switch Narrator on.
After it’s on
The same Narrator settings page is where you customize voice and speech and set up braille. Microsoft’s Narrator guide covers startup, navigation, speech and braille. Some newer Narrator features depend on your Windows version, so an option in the guide may not appear on an older build.
To silence speech without closing Narrator, Microsoft’s current guide lists Narrator key + Shift + S. That only mutes speech; Narrator keeps running. Confirm the shortcut on your Windows version.

iPhone: ways to turn it on
- Settings: go to Settings > Accessibility > VoiceOver and turn on VoiceOver.
- Siri: ask Siri to turn on VoiceOver.
- Control Center: this works only if you’ve already added the VoiceOver control.
- Accessibility Shortcut: this works only if you’ve configured it for VoiceOver.
After it’s on
Apple Support states: “When VoiceOver is on, you must use VoiceOver gestures to operate iPhone.” Ordinary taps and swipes no longer behave as before. Apple includes a VoiceOver Tutorial and a safe practice area for trying gestures without changing anything on the phone. Use them first.
iPad
VoiceOver is also Apple’s screen reader on iPad. The route should match the iPhone’s: open Settings > Accessibility > VoiceOver. Labels and shortcut options can differ by iPadOS version, so check what your iPad displays. If you can’t find it, use the search field in Settings.

Per Google’s instructions, a single tap focuses on an item and announces it, a double tap activates it, and two-finger dragging scrolls. Gestures can vary with navigation mode and device or TalkBack version, so follow the on-screen prompt and open the TalkBack tutorial rather than relying on a fixed gesture list.

What to know before you switch one on
- Nothing extra is required. Braille displays and external keyboards are optional aids or shortcuts, not prerequisites.
- Touch behaves differently. On iPhone and Android, learn the focus and activation gestures first, using the built-in tutorial.
- Settings are the dependable route. Shortcuts are faster but depend on platform, device and version. When one fails, go through Accessibility settings.
- Know your exit before you start. Use the same method you used to turn it on: the keyboard toggle on Windows and Chromebook, or the same Accessibility settings screen on phones and tablets.
