To turn on mid-roll ads for a monetized YouTube live stream, open YouTube Studio, go to Create > Go live, select or schedule your stream, then choose Edit > Monetization. Turn Monetization on and select Automatic, Scheduled, or Manual for mid-roll timing. YouTube recommends Automatic; ad slots are opportunities, not a guarantee that every viewer will see an ad.
Before you begin
- Your channel must be monetized, and you must turn monetization on for the stream.
- To earn ad and YouTube Premium revenue from live streams viewed on the Watch Page, accept YouTube’s Watch Page Monetization Module.
- Live ad settings are configured in YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room. Manual ad placement is available from a computer.
For the current official steps and details, see YouTube Help’s Monetize your live stream, Tips on how ads work – Live, and Choose how you want to monetize – Computer.
Turn on mid-roll ads for a live stream
- Open YouTube Studio.
- Click Create > Go live.
- In Live Control Room, start a stream from the Stream tab, or choose a scheduled stream from Manage.
- At the top of the stream page, click Edit > Monetization.
- Set Monetization to On.
- Choose Automatic, Scheduled, or Manual for live mid-rolls, then set any available options for that mode.
Turning monetization on is separate from choosing the timing mode: confirm both settings before you go live.
Choose the mid-roll mode that fits your stream
| Mode | Who controls timing | What to expect | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| Automatic | YouTube selects natural breakpoints. | Choose a frequency of Low, Medium, or High. YouTube describes these as the lowest, middle, and highest frequency and earnings-potential options, respectively. Different viewers may receive ads at different times. | Least live intervention. YouTube recommends this mode. Its guidance says scheduled or manual settings may have lower earnings potential; that is not a prediction of an individual channel’s earnings. |
| Scheduled | You set an interval. | Choose an interval of 6, 12, 18, 24, or 30 minutes between ads. | More predictable timing, but less automatic adaptation to the stream. YouTube says this mode may have lower earnings potential than Automatic. |
| Manual | You insert each break while live. | Trigger an ad break when you choose. If you do not insert a mid-roll break, no mid-roll will be served. | Most control, but it requires attention during the stream. YouTube says this mode may have lower earnings potential than Automatic. |
Delay automatic ads during an important moment
When Automatic is enabled, use Delay ads in Live Control Room to postpone mid-roll ads for 10 minutes—for example, during a key announcement or performance. YouTube displays a five-second countdown before ads resume. This delay does not suppress manual ad breaks: manually placed ads still display while Delay ads is on.

What viewers see—and what ad settings cannot guarantee
Monetization and a selected ad mode do not guarantee an ad at every slot or for every viewer. YouTube’s systems decide whether to serve an ad. Viewers who do not receive one continue watching; viewers who do see an ad rejoin the live stream when it ends or when they skip it. YouTube states: “Ad slots are not guaranteed to serve ads. Our ad systems decide which ad slots may get an ad based on a number of factors to best balance viewer experience, creator earnings, and advertiser values.”
YouTube says Automatic includes measures intended to limit disruption to channel members, temporarily pause mid-rolls for viewers sending gifts, Super Chats, or Stickers, and snooze mid-rolls for all viewers during high-engagement moments. These measures do not ensure that every interruption is avoided. If a live stream is embedded on an external site with autoplay, YouTube says ads are turned off for that stream.

Set defaults for future live streams
Monetized channels without rights management can configure channel-level mid-roll defaults in Live Control Room settings. YouTube Help says the default is Monetization On with the recommended Automatic Medium option, and that it can be changed. Channels with rights management do not currently have channel-level settings. Check the settings on an individual stream as well, particularly if the channel-level controls are unavailable.
What YouTube’s revenue statistic does—and does not—say
YouTube reported an over 20% uplift in in-stream ad revenue per hour in January 2024. The comparison was the average in-stream revenue per hour for channels that enabled automatic live mid-rolls versus channels that did not, averaged across 207 countries. This is a platform-reported group comparison, not a forecast or guarantee for any individual creator.

Common setup and timing problems
- Monetization or mid-roll controls are missing: Confirm the channel is monetized, open the stream in Live Control Room, and check Edit > Monetization. Channel-level defaults are not available for channels with rights management, according to YouTube Help.
- No ad appeared at a break: A configured slot is not a guaranteed ad. YouTube decides whether an ad is served, and some viewers may continue watching without one.
- No mid-roll appeared in Manual mode: Insert the break while streaming. Manual mode does not serve a mid-roll if you do not place one.
- An ad interrupted a moment despite Delay ads: The delay applies to automatic mid-rolls; manual breaks still display while it is on. Automatic ads resume after the 10-minute postponement, with a five-second countdown.
- Viewers on an autoplay embed do not see ads: YouTube says ads are turned off for live streams embedded on external sites with autoplay.
