How to Stream a Prerecorded Video Playlist on YouTube Using OBS

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

To stream a prerecorded playlist on YouTube with OBS, add the files to an OBS VLC Video source, set their order and looping behavior, then send OBS to the YouTube stream URL and key shown in Live Control Room. VLC must be installed, and the computer running OBS must stay on and connected for the broadcast to continue.

Before you set up the playlist

Confirm your channel can go live

YouTube’s live-stream overview says a channel must be verified and have no live-stream restrictions in the previous 90 days. Creators must be at least 16. First-time live-stream activation can take up to 24 hours, so enable access well before the planned broadcast. Check YouTube’s live-streaming overview for current eligibility details.

Install OBS and VLC

YouTube lists OBS as open-source streaming software available at no charge. OBS’s VLC Video source requires VLC to be installed; if you use 64-bit OBS, install 64-bit VLC. The source is for playlists. OBS’s built-in Media Source is suited to playing an individual media file, not managing a multi-file playlist. See the OBS Media Sources documentation.

Build and check the playlist in OBS

  1. Create or select a scene. In OBS, choose the scene that will contain the prerecorded video. Keep the layout simple unless you need additional overlays or sources.
  2. Add the playlist source. In the Sources dock, select +, choose VLC Video, and create or select the source.
  3. Add files in playback order. In the source properties, add the local video files to the playlist in the sequence you want them to play. Check the list before going live; the order determines what viewers see next.
  4. Set shuffle and loop deliberately. Leave Shuffle Playlist off for predictable order. OBS documentation says Loop Playlist is on by default. Leave it enabled if the sequence should restart after its final item; turn it off for a one-pass event.
  5. Choose what happens when the source is hidden. The documented VLC source behavior defaults to stopping when not visible and restarting when visible. Keep the source visible in the active scene throughout the broadcast, or set its visibility behavior intentionally if your scene changes.
  6. Preview the picture and sound. Start playback in OBS and verify that the video fits the canvas, the audio is present and at a sensible level, and the files advance as intended. Resolve missing-file or playback problems before connecting to a public broadcast.

OBS labels may differ between versions; its Media Sources article is dated January 11, 2022. If a control is named differently in your installed build, use the current properties for the VLC Video source and confirm the result in preview.

  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Connect OBS to YouTube Live

  1. Open YouTube Live Control Room and create or select the stream for the broadcast.
  2. Copy the server URL and stream key YouTube provides. In OBS, open Settings > Stream, choose YouTube as the service if it is available in your build, and enter the key. If OBS asks for a server, use the URL supplied by YouTube. YouTube describes the stream key as the credential that directs an encoder’s feed to the right stream; do not share it.
  3. Choose RTMPS ingestion when available. YouTube recommends encrypted RTMPS for sending an encoder feed.
  4. Start the OBS stream and use Live Control Room’s preview before making the event public. Confirm the correct video, audio, stream destination and watch page on the devices your audience is likely to use. YouTube’s encoder setup guidance covers the stream URL, key and setup.

Test bandwidth, picture and sound before the event

Your upload connection needs capacity for OBS’s total outgoing bitrate. YouTube recommends leaving about 20% upload-bandwidth headroom, rather than using the full measured upload rate for the stream. Network conditions can fluctuate, so test at the time and on the connection you plan to use. See YouTube’s live encoder settings and troubleshooting guidance.

  • Run a test with representative video and audio, not just a brief idle screen.
  • Watch Live Control Room’s preview and stream-health indicators while the test is running.
  • Check that the watch page loads and that sound and picture are present on target devices.
  • Keep the playlist source visible in the active scene, and verify that the next file begins and the loop behaves as chosen.
  • Leave enough time to correct a wrong stream key, missing media file, silent source or unstable connection before the intended start.

Check copyright and YouTube policy

Prerecording a video does not exempt a live broadcast from YouTube rules. The stream must comply with YouTube’s Community Guidelines and Terms of Service. Copyrighted material can be matched during a live broadcast, and copyright strikes or other restrictions can affect the stream. Use videos, music and other material you have the rights or permission to broadcast. Review YouTube’s copyright guidance for live streams.

Troubleshoot common playlist-stream problems

What you see Likely cause What to check
VLC Video is missing from the source menu VLC is not installed, or its architecture does not match the OBS build. Install VLC; for 64-bit OBS, use 64-bit VLC, then reopen OBS and check the Sources menu.
The wrong file plays next or the order changes Files are in a different order than intended, or shuffle is enabled. Review the playlist order in source properties and turn off Shuffle Playlist.
The playlist stops at the last file Looping is disabled. Enable Loop Playlist if the sequence should repeat.
Playback stops or restarts after changing scenes The VLC source is hidden and its visibility behavior is set to stop and restart. Keep the source visible in the active scene or choose a suitable visibility behavior in its properties.
YouTube does not receive the OBS feed The server URL or stream key is incorrect, or the stream has not been started in OBS. Copy the current URL and key from the selected Live Control Room stream, keep the key private, and verify the connection in the preview.
Video or audio stutters, or stream health is poor The connection may not have enough stable upload capacity for the outgoing bitrate. Test the connection under broadcast conditions, leave YouTube’s recommended upload headroom, and check Live Control Room stream health.
A live broadcast is restricted or interrupted over content The material may be subject to copyright matching, a strike or another YouTube policy restriction. Use only content you are permitted to stream and check YouTube’s notice and policy guidance.

Or let it run in the cloud

If the goal is an always-on prerecorded YouTube channel rather than a manually operated OBS event, StreamNeo is a cloud option: upload your video or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It keeps looping from the cloud, so your computer and home connection do not have to stay on. StreamNeo is YouTube-only and plays uploaded videos; it does not stream from a camera.

  • Nothing has to stay on at home while the stream runs.
  • Uploaded quality is streamed as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot with no re-encode or quality tiers.
  • Automatic recovery is included if YouTube drops the stream.
  • The first day is free with no card, one free day per account. Billing options are a day, a week, a month, six months or a year, and you can cancel any time.
  • Monthly: $9.99 per month.

Each slot includes one always-on stream, 10 GB storage per slot pooled across active slots, 24/7 looping and playlists, automatic recovery if YouTube drops, and StreamNeo team support. The product is the same on every plan; only the billing length changes. UPI and cards are accepted in India, with card checkout worldwide. For five or more slots, contact support. Cost and operating trade-offs

OBS and VLC are available without a software charge, but the local method depends on your own computer, internet connection and time to monitor the stream. The PC must remain on and connected, and an interruption at home can interrupt the broadcast. YouTube’s encoder directory also lists Gyre for cloud-based continuous prerecorded streams; that is a separate always-on use case from operating a local OBS playlist. Current Gyre pricing and terms are not established here. For a cloud workflow with the details above, StreamNeo offers these billing lengths:

  • Daily: $0.99 per day.
  • Weekly: $2.99 per week.
  • Monthly: $9.99 per month.
  • 6 months: $49.99 for 6 months.
  • Yearly: $89.99 a year.

For planning, StreamNeo provides an upload-time calculator, a cloud-vs-PC cost calculator, and a copyright safety checklist.
