How to Turn On Microsoft Defender Antivirus in Windows 10

Turn on Windows 10 real-time antivirus protection in Windows Security, find out why the setting may be unavailable, and distinguish Defender from Windows support.

To turn on Windows Defender—now called Microsoft Defender Antivirus—in Windows 10, open Start, search for Windows Security, then go to Virus & threat protection > Manage settings and switch Real-time protection to On. If the switch is unavailable, another antivirus or your organization’s settings may be controlling protection.

Turn on real-time protection

  1. Open Start and search for Windows Security.
  2. Open the app, then select Virus & threat protection.
  3. Under Virus & threat protection settings, select Manage settings.
  4. Set Real-time protection to On. Exact labels or navigation can vary by Windows build, language, and whether the device is managed by an organization. Microsoft’s Windows Security guidance documents the setting.

Real-time protection checks files as they are opened or downloaded. Microsoft warns that while it is off, files you open or download will not be scanned for threats. Microsoft also says the feature will soon turn itself back on after being switched off, so turning it off is not a durable setting. Microsoft Support

If the setting is missing or unavailable

Check which antivirus provider is active

In Windows Security, open Virus & threat protection, select Who’s protecting me?, then choose Manage providers to check the antivirus protection status. A non-Microsoft antivirus or antimalware product can automatically disable Microsoft Defender Antivirus. Microsoft says that after you uninstall that product, Defender should return to active mode automatically. Microsoft’s instructions

For a work or school computer, contact its administrator

If the control is still unavailable on a device managed by your workplace or school, ask its administrator. Organization settings may govern antivirus controls; there is no universal fix established for every managed device. Avoid registry edits or policy workarounds that could conflict with your organization’s security setup.

Use Microsoft’s guided troubleshooter if needed

Microsoft’s Security troubleshooter can check antivirus protection status and updates, among other Windows Security options. Follow the current workflow on Microsoft’s Windows Security troubleshooting page.

Scan the PC or a specific item

  • To run a Quick scan, open Windows Security > Virus & threat protection and select Quick scan.
  • To scan a particular file or folder, right-click it and choose Scan with Microsoft Defender.

These scan options are available through Microsoft’s Windows Security guidance.

Remember Windows 10’s separate support status

Turning on Defender enables antivirus protection; it does not restore Windows 10’s operating-system support. Microsoft ended support for Windows 10 on October 14, 2025. The system continues to work, but it no longer receives ordinary software and security updates or technical assistance. Microsoft’s Windows end-of-support page

Microsoft points users with eligible PCs toward upgrading to Windows 11. Its consumer Extended Security Updates (ESU) program is a separate, paid option for enrolled Windows 10 PCs, providing critical and important security updates through October 12, 2027. Eligibility and enrollment terms depend on the device and should be checked with Microsoft; ESU does not change how Defender is enabled. Microsoft’s ESU information
