Choose the recovery path that fits your PS5

Retry a stuck download from the console
- Press the PS button to open the control center.
- Open Downloads/Uploads and highlight the system software update.
- Choose View Error Info, then select Try Again.
If multiple downloads have failed, Sony directs users to its PC or Mac USB update instructions.

Check the connection for update errors
For error code WS-116522-7, Sony identifies a problem with the system software update. Restart the console and, if possible, connect it to the router with an Ethernet cable. If you use Wi-Fi, move the console closer to the router and reduce obstructions between them.

- Wait at least five minutes, then turn them back on.
- Try the update again.
If you are updating with a game disc, check that the disc is clean and undamaged. Sony lists disc-based updating as an alternate method for this error; do not use it if the disc itself is the problem. See Sony’s WS-116522-7 troubleshooting page.

Update in Safe Mode if the Home screen is unavailable
- Turn off the PS5 completely.
- Press and hold the power button. Release it after the second beep.
- Connect the controller to the console with a USB cable, then press the PS button.
- Select Update System Software and follow the prompts.
These steps use Sony’s Safe Mode guide. Select the update option; do not choose a reset or reinstall option unless you intend to erase the console.
Install the update from a USB drive
If updating directly or through Safe Mode fails, use Sony’s official update file. You need a PC or Mac and a USB drive formatted as FAT32 or exFAT. Sony’s current instructions state that approximately 1.1 GB of free space is needed for the update file.

- On the USB drive, create a folder named PS5, then create a folder named UPDATE inside it.
- Download the update file from Sony’s PS5 system software update page and save it in the UPDATE folder as PS5UPDATE.PUP.
- Connect the USB drive to the PS5.
- Start the console in Safe Mode using the power-button steps above.
- Select Update System Software > Update from USB Storage Device > OK.
Use only Sony’s official update file and method. Sony warns: “Don’t turn off your console during the installation. Interrupting the installation can cause the console to be damaged.”
If the PS5 does not find the update file
- Confirm the USB drive is formatted as FAT32 or exFAT.
- Check the exact folder structure: PS5/UPDATE/PS5UPDATE.PUP.
- Use uppercase letters for the folder and file names, and verify the filename is exactly PS5UPDATE.PUP.
- Make sure the file came from Sony’s official update page, not a third-party firmware site.

Reinstall system software only as a last resort
Updating and reinstalling are different operations. Reinstallation uses a separate reinstallation file and the Safe Mode option Reset PS5 (Reinstall System Software). Sony warns that this deletes all data on the console and removes the system software. Back up data first if you can; do not select this option as a routine update retry.
Sony’s Safe Mode menu also includes Restore Default Settings, which preserves console content, and Repair Console Storage, which does not erase data. These are distinct tools, not substitutes for the system software update.

If the console still will not update after the available recovery steps, use Sony’s PlayStation Repairs diagnostic tool for the next support options. An update failure by itself does not establish that the console has a hardware fault.
