When the staged rollout reaches your phone, open Google Messages → profile picture → Messages settings → Protection & Safety, then turn on Enhanced protection. The control may not be visible yet; if it is missing, update Google Messages, Android and Google Play system components, keep existing spam protection enabled, and check again later.
What you need before the switch appears
Enhanced protection is not being activated for every account at once. Google says the feature will roll out over the coming weeks, and availability can vary by country and device. A current app installation therefore does not guarantee that the new control is already present.

- Install the latest Google Messages update available for your phone.
- Install pending Android system updates and Google Play system updates.
- Use the Google Messages app rather than a third-party SMS interface when following the menu path.
- Expect the setting to be opt-in. It does not replace the existing spam-protection control.
The phone models associated with Gemini Nano’s unfamiliar-link analysis have a narrower eligibility list than the overall Enhanced protection rollout. Buying one of those phones does not guarantee immediate access, because Google’s rollout is staged.
How to turn on Enhanced protection
- Open Google Messages.
- Tap your profile picture or profile icon at the top of the screen.
- Choose Messages settings.
- Open Protection & Safety.
- Look for Enhanced protection. When Google has enabled the feature for your account and device, use its switch and follow any explanation or confirmation shown in the app.
- Leave the settings screen after the switch shows as enabled. New scam-detection and link-warning behavior applies to supported conversations and links; it is not a manual scan you run on each message.
If you see only Spam protection and no Enhanced protection entry, you cannot force-enable the feature with a hidden code or a separate download. The missing entry normally means the staged rollout has not reached your account, region or app build.

What Enhanced protection adds
Cloud-assisted scam detection for complex conversations
Enhanced protection lets Google Messages use Google’s cloud Gemini models to assess conversation context and possible scammer intent when messages come from unknown senders. This is aimed at complicated exchanges that may not match a simple, known spam pattern. The analysis is described as running in Private AI Compute, an encrypted, dedicated environment that Google says is designed to keep the data inaccessible to anyone else, including Google.
That does not mean every conversation is automatically treated as a scam or that you receive a human review. It means the service can evaluate broader context than a basic pattern check when an unfamiliar sender’s conversation appears suspicious.
Real-time checks for unfamiliar links
On supported devices, Gemini Nano can use real-time web signals to assess an unfamiliar link before you tap it. This local-device capability is separate from the cloud Gemini analysis used for complex conversations, and its hardware eligibility is more limited.

Clearer link checkpoints
Google is redesigning warnings for links sent by numbers that are not saved in your contacts. The warning gives you more time and additional context before the link opens, creating a deliberate pause rather than treating the tap as an ordinary web link.
Enhanced protection versus the existing spam setting
Google Messages already has a separate spam-protection feature. The two controls differ in where analysis occurs, which messages they target and how links are evaluated.

These controls are complementary. Turning on Enhanced protection does not require turning off spam protection, and leaving the established spam setting enabled preserves its known-pattern and URL-checking behavior while Enhanced protection adds the newer checks.
Why the feature is being offered
Google says its systems flag more than 5 million suspected scam calls and texts each month in 2026. In a Google/YouGov survey of 4,500 adults across the United States, Canada and Australia, 40% said they were “very” or “extremely” concerned about mobile fraud. Those figures describe the broader problem, not a guarantee that Enhanced protection will identify every scam.
The practical target is the message that looks plausible in isolation but becomes suspicious when the conversation, sender behavior and destination link are considered together. A warning is a decision aid, not proof that a message is fraudulent or safe.
Why you cannot see Enhanced protection yet
The staged rollout has not reached your account
Google has said the setting will arrive over the coming weeks rather than on one universal release date. Two people using the same phone model can therefore see different menus temporarily. Continue using the existing spam control and revisit Messages settings → Protection & Safety after updates are installed.
Your app or system software is behind
Check for updates to Google Messages, Android and Google Play system components. These are the three update areas Google identifies for troubleshooting availability. After installing updates, reopen Messages and inspect the same Protection & Safety page.

Country or device eligibility differs
Google notes that device and country support can differ. A missing switch is not conclusive proof that a phone will never support the feature; it may reflect the rollout stage for that region or device.

You are expecting the Gemini Nano control
The unfamiliar-link check powered by Gemini Nano has a narrower device list than Enhanced protection as a whole. A phone may receive the Enhanced protection menu without supporting every Gemini Nano capability. Conversely, owning a listed model does not guarantee that the menu is live immediately.
The setting is being confused with Spam protection
Look for two separate entries. The established path ends at Spam protection; the new opt-in control is labeled Enhanced protection. If only the former is present, leave it enabled while waiting for the latter.
Which phones support the Gemini Nano link checks?
Google lists the following device groups for the Gemini Nano unfamiliar-link capability:
- Pixel 10 and newer Pixel phones.
- Samsung Galaxy S26 series.
- Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 8.
- Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 8.
- Other select devices that Google may add or enable during the rollout.
This is a capability list, not a promise of immediate activation. Google has not stated that every phone receiving Enhanced protection will support Gemini Nano link analysis, nor that buying a listed model bypasses the staged rollout.

Does Enhanced protection send your texts to Google?
For its complex-conversation feature, Enhanced protection uses cloud Gemini analysis. Relevant context from a conversation with an unknown sender is therefore processed outside the phone, but Google describes that processing as taking place in Private AI Compute: an encrypted, dedicated environment intended to prevent access by anyone else, including Google.
This is different from saying that no message data leaves the phone. Cloud-assisted analysis necessarily involves sending information for processing. The protection claim is about the isolation and privacy design of Private AI Compute, not an on-device-only architecture.
Existing spam protection has its own disclosure. Google Messages Help says it uses on-device machine-learning models for known spam patterns, checks URLs with Google, and may ephemerally process unencrypted message contents for spam detection. RCS chats in Google Messages are end-to-end encrypted. Enhanced protection’s cloud analysis and the existing spam system should therefore be understood as separate processing paths with separate explanations.
How link warnings should change your behavior
- Pause when a link arrives from a number that is not saved in your contacts.
- Read the warning and its additional context instead of tapping through immediately.
- Consider whether the conversation’s request, urgency or payment instructions match what you would expect from the claimed sender.
- If the message is unexpected, verify the person or organization through a contact method you already trust rather than replying through the suspicious thread.
Enhanced protection cannot recover credentials or payments already submitted to a scam site. Its value is greatest when you treat the checkpoint as a reason to verify before opening the destination.
Keep existing spam protection enabled
If Enhanced protection is unavailable, use the documented spam setting:

- Choose Messages settings.
- Tap Protection & Safety.
- Open Spam protection.
- Turn on Enable spam protection.
Google Messages Help says spam protection is turned on automatically and that the app notifies you when this occurs. The menu is still useful for checking the current state and for confirming that the established protection remains active while Enhanced protection rolls out.
A practical decision guide
If the Enhanced protection switch is visible
Turn it on if you want the additional context-based scam analysis, supported-device unfamiliar-link checks and stronger link warnings. Review the privacy explanation shown in Messages so you understand the cloud-assisted portion before confirming.
If the switch is absent but Spam protection is available
Enable or keep Spam protection enabled, install pending Messages, Android and Google Play system updates, and check the Protection & Safety page again later. The absence of the new entry is consistent with Google’s staged rollout.

If you have a listed Gemini Nano phone but no Enhanced protection
Do not treat the model list as an activation guarantee. Gemini Nano support and the account-level rollout are separate questions. Keep the existing setting enabled and wait for Google’s rollout to reach the phone.
If a warning appears for a link you trust
Do not dismiss the warning solely because the message looks familiar. Verify the sender and destination independently, then decide whether opening the link is necessary. The checkpoint is designed to slow the decision, not to declare that every flagged link is malicious.
