macOS 27’s Siri AI is a beta assistant that can understand follow-up questions, search your personal content, work with what is on your screen, help with writing, and keep conversations in a dedicated Siri app. On a compatible Apple silicon Mac, you enable it from System Settings > Siri; there is no Terminal command or unofficial switch.
This guide covers Siri AI, not macOS 27’s separate Liquid Glass appearance controls. Availability depends on your Mac model, Siri and device language, region, and the feature’s beta status.

Check whether your Mac can run Siri AI
Siri AI requires macOS 27 or later and an Apple Intelligence-enabled Mac. Apple lists the following hardware and language conditions:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
| Requirement | What Apple specifies | What it affects |
|---|---|---|
| Operating system | macOS 27 or later | The Siri AI beta option and its current controls. |
| Mac hardware | MacBook Neo with A18 Pro, or a Mac with M1 or later | Basic Siri AI eligibility. An eligible existing Mac is sufficient; buying accessories or a subscription is not required. |
| Siri and device language | Both must be set to a supported language. Apple says English is available to start. | Whether Siri AI appears and which functions are offered. |
| Region and feature rollout | Some devices and features vary by region or language. | Availability of individual capabilities and spoken activation. |
| Expressive voice controls | Mac with M3 or later and at least 12 GB of unified memory | The additional Voice, Pace, and Expressivity controls. Pace and expressivity adjustments are currently listed for American and British voices. |
Siri AI is a beta feature, so the controls you see can differ from Apple’s documentation as the service changes. A missing option does not necessarily indicate a damaged installation; model, language, region, or rollout restrictions can explain it.

What you do—and do not—need to buy
Siri AI is a software feature. If your Mac already meets Apple’s requirements, you do not need a new microphone, accessory, cleaner utility, repair tool, or subscription to activate it. If the Mac is ineligible, the supported path is a compatible Apple silicon Mac; there is no documented software switch that turns an Intel Mac into an eligible device. The narrower expressive-voice requirement is not a reason to replace an otherwise compatible Mac unless those particular controls matter to you.
Separate base eligibility from individual features
Think of availability in layers. First, the operating system and Mac model determine whether Siri AI can be offered at all. Next, Siri and macOS language, region, and rollout determine which capabilities appear. Finally, individual options can have their own conditions: spoken activation may be unavailable for a particular language, and Voice, Pace, and Expressivity need an M3-or-later Mac with at least 12 GB of unified memory. Meeting the base requirement therefore does not guarantee every control.
Turn on Siri AI from System Settings
- Open System Settings from the Apple menu or your Dock.
- Select Siri in the sidebar.
- If Siri is disabled, click Turn On Siri.
- Choose Try Siri AI (Beta). If Siri was already enabled, the same beta option is available directly in the Siri pane.
- Follow the onscreen instructions to finish enrollment.
Apple’s supported activation path is the System Settings interface. Do not rely on Terminal commands, hidden feature flags, configuration profiles, or third-party activation tools; they are not part of Apple’s documented setup.

- Confirm that the Mac is running macOS 27 or later.
- Check the model against Apple’s supported Apple silicon list. Intel Macs are not included in the stated requirement.
- Review the language used for both Siri and the Mac. Siri AI starts in supported English configurations, while other languages may not yet be enabled.
- Consider regional rollout: Apple says availability can vary by region and language.
- If Siri itself is off, use Turn On Siri first; the beta choice is presented after Siri is enabled.
These checks address eligibility. They do not bypass Apple’s language, regional, or beta restrictions.
What Siri AI can do in macOS 27
Search your personal information
Siri AI can look through personal content such as photos, messages, mail, and calendar details. You can ask for an item directly and then ask a follow-up question instead of restating the entire request. The result depends on what is available to Siri and on the access you allow for individual apps.
For practical searches, start with the kind of information and time or person you remember, then narrow it conversationally. For example, ask for a relevant photo or calendar detail, then ask a follow-up that clarifies which result you mean. Siri’s ability to answer is tied to the app permissions you leave enabled, so a deliberately restricted app may not contribute context.
Understand what is on your screen
Visual Intelligence lets Siri work from a screen capture. You can select a complete window or only part of the display, then ask Siri about the selected material, search for an image, or use an offered action. This is useful when copying the relevant text or image into a separate prompt would be inconvenient.
Help with writing
Siri AI can generate a draft, summarize information, or provide feedback on text. Treat the output as assistance rather than an automatic replacement for checking names, dates, tone, and factual details before sharing it.
Use a focused request and specify the kind of help you want—such as a summary, a draft, or feedback—rather than assuming every writing request produces the same format. You can continue the conversation to refine the result without repeating the original context.
Keep conversations in the Siri app
The dedicated Siri app keeps conversations together so you can resume an existing thread or start a new one. This separates longer exchanges from a one-off spoken request and gives you a place to return to earlier context.

Work with apps and Spotlight
Apple describes Siri AI as integrated with apps and Spotlight in its macOS 27 overview. The exact actions offered depend on the app, the request, and the language or region in which the feature is available. Integration does not mean every app exposes the same actions; App Access controls and each app’s supported data determine what Siri can use.
Follow-up questions and context
Follow-ups are one of the main differences between a single command and a continuing Siri AI conversation. Ask an initial question, inspect the answer, and then clarify or narrow it in the same thread. If the subject changes, start a new conversation in the Siri app so unrelated context does not carry forward.
Customize how you activate Siri
Add Siri to the menu bar
For a visible click target, open System Settings > Menu Bar > Menu Bar Controls, then enable Siri. The Siri control appears in the menu bar and can be used without remembering a spoken phrase or keyboard shortcut.
Set spoken activation
In System Settings > Siri > Requests, choose the spoken activation option when it is offered for your device and language. Apple documents “Siri” and “Hey Siri” activation, but the available phrase can vary with hardware, language, and regional support. If the control is absent, that is an availability limitation rather than a setting you can force on.
Choose language, voice, and variation
The Siri settings pane lets you change Siri’s language, voice variation, or voice. Changing language can alter which requests, spoken activation options, and AI capabilities are available, so check the resulting controls before assuming a feature has disappeared.

Language is therefore more than a pronunciation preference: it can affect eligibility and feature coverage. If a control vanishes after a language change, verify the new language and region combination before treating it as an installation problem.
Adjust Siri’s voice and response style
Expressive voice controls
On a Mac with an M3 chip or later and at least 12 GB of unified memory, Siri AI can expose additional controls for Voice, Pace, and Expressivity. Apple currently lists pace and expressivity adjustments for American and British voices. A compatible M1 or M2 Mac can run Siri AI but will not meet this narrower expressive-voice requirement.
Spoken or silent replies
Siri settings include a choice between spoken and silent responses. Spoken replies are useful when you are away from the screen or using accessibility audio; silent responses are better in a shared office or during a meeting. The precise labels can differ depending on which Siri version is active.
Show requests on screen
You can choose whether Siri always displays your request onscreen. Keeping requests visible helps when you need to inspect wording or follow a visual result; disabling the display favors a less prominent interaction. Apple notes that the exact response controls depend on the active Siri version.
Pick settings by situation
There is no universally best combination. Hands-free use favors an available spoken trigger and spoken replies. A shared workspace favors the menu-bar control and silent responses. Someone who wants a more natural voice should first verify the M3-and-12-GB requirement and then choose an American or British voice if pace and expressivity are important. For visible, auditable interactions, keep requests onscreen even if you normally use voice.

Use Visual Intelligence step by step
- Display the window, document, image, or other material you want Siri to inspect.
- Press
Command-Shift-Space barto select a window, or pressCommand-Shift-6to select part of the screen. - After the screen capture is selected, choose Ask Siri, Search Image, or another available action.
- Ask a focused question about the selected content. Follow up in the same conversation if you need clarification.
Visual Intelligence operates on the screen capture you select. Selecting only the relevant region limits unrelated material and makes the request easier to interpret. The actions offered after capture can vary by content, app, language, and region.
Because the feature works from a capture, check the selection before submitting it. A full-window capture may include unrelated messages or other information, while a smaller selection can keep the question focused. Automatic visual processing and manual screen selection are separate choices: you can manage the former with Automatic Visual Look Up and use the latter when you deliberately invoke Visual Intelligence.
Control Visual Look Up and app access
Automatic Visual Look Up
Open System Settings > Siri and use the Automatic Visual Look Up control to turn automatic lookup on or off. Turning it off does not remove Siri AI; it changes whether macOS automatically attempts visual identification.
Decide what each app can contribute
- Open System Settings > Siri.
- Select App Access.
- Choose an app from the list.
- Review whether Siri can learn from that app and whether its suggestions can appear in Search, Look Up, or on the Lock Screen.
- Adjust those permissions to match the sensitivity of the app’s content.
App Access is a per-app decision rather than a single global switch. For example, you can allow useful calendar context while limiting learning or suggestions from a more private app. The available controls and destinations are the ones Apple exposes for that app.
After changing a permission, test a request that should use the app. If the result no longer includes that app’s information, the restriction is working; if it still appears, review the specific learning and suggestion switches rather than assuming all access is controlled by one toggle.
Choose settings for different situations
| Your priority | Settings to consider | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Hands-free use | Enable spoken “Siri” or “Hey Siri” when available; keep spoken responses on. | Spoken activation and voices depend on language, region, and device support. |
| Quiet rooms or shared workspaces | Use the menu-bar control or another non-spoken entry point; choose silent responses. | You must look at the screen for results. |
| More natural speech | On eligible M3-or-later hardware with 12 GB or more unified memory, tune Voice, Pace, and Expressivity. | The extra controls are not available on every Siri AI Mac, and pace or expressivity choices are currently limited to listed American and British voices. |
| Minimal exposure of private data | Review App Access, restrict learning and suggestions for sensitive apps, and disable Automatic Visual Look Up if you do not want automatic visual analysis. | Siri may have less context for requests involving restricted apps or images. |
| Visible, auditable requests | Keep the option to always show requests onscreen. | Requests are more prominent while you work or present your screen. |
Privacy, server processing, and usage limits
Apple says you control what you share with Siri and points users to its privacy information for details. App Access settings let you limit learning and suggestion surfaces on an app-by-app basis, while Visual Look Up has its own automatic-analysis switch.
Some Siri AI capabilities rely on server-side models. Apple says daily usage limits can vary according to the feature, request complexity, system demand, and system policies. Do not assume that every capability is unlimited or that a limit will be identical from one day to the next. If a request is refused because of a limit, reducing unnecessary retries and trying again later is the practical response; changing voice or menu-bar settings will not raise a server limit.
Recommended Free Tools
Privacy and availability are related but not identical. Limiting an app can reduce the context Siri has for a request, while a server-side limit can affect a capability even when permissions are correct. Check both dimensions before changing unrelated settings.
Troubleshoot common setup and customization problems
The beta option is missing
Work through the eligibility list: macOS 27 or later, a MacBook Neo with A18 Pro or a Mac with M1 or later, and a supported Siri and device language. If all three conditions are met, regional rollout or a feature-specific restriction may still apply.
Siri is available but spoken activation is not
Open System Settings > Siri > Requests and check whether a spoken option is offered for the current language and device. If no option appears, use the menu-bar control or the onscreen Siri interface instead; Apple does not document a supported workaround for forcing unavailable spoken activation.

The expressive controls do not appear
Verify the narrower hardware requirement: M3 or later and at least 12 GB of unified memory. Also check the selected voice. Apple currently lists pace and expressivity adjustments for American and British voices, so another voice can legitimately show fewer controls.

Open Siri > App Access, select the app, and inspect both learning permission and suggestion destinations. If access is restricted, Siri may not be able to use that app’s content or show related suggestions in Search, Look Up, or on the Lock Screen.
A request works once and then stops
Check whether the task depends on a server-side model. Apple’s daily limits vary with feature, complexity, demand, and policy, so intermittent availability can be a limit or rollout condition rather than a local Mac failure.
A screen result is irrelevant
Repeat Visual Intelligence with a tighter selection. Choose only the relevant window or screen region, then select Ask Siri, Search Image, or the action that matches your goal. A broad capture can include material that changes the interpretation of the request.

Siri AI’s interface and supported languages can change as Apple develops macOS 27. Keep the distinction between three types of availability in mind: whether your Mac meets the base hardware requirement, whether your language and region are supported, and whether a particular capability has an additional condition such as M3 hardware for expressive voices. A compatible Mac can therefore show Siri AI while still lacking one spoken, visual, or voice-customization option.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:

This uses the context Apple documents without granting Siri more app access than you intend.
