To turn on YouTube captions, open the video’s player controls and select CC on a computer, Closed captions on a phone or tablet, or Captions on a TV or game console. The control appears only when that video has a caption track available.
Turn captions on or off on a computer
- Open the YouTube video and move your pointer over the player to show its controls.
- Click CC in the lower-right corner to turn captions on. Click it again to turn them off. The button appears when captions are available. YouTube Help
Change caption appearance
In the player, select Settings, then Subtitles/CC and Options. YouTube provides controls for font, color, opacity, size, background, window, and character-edge style. YouTube Help

Turn captions on in the YouTube app
Android
- Open the video’s watch page and tap the player once to show the controls.
- Tap Closed captions to turn captions on. Tap it again to turn them off.
To set app caption preferences, tap your profile picture, then Settings > Captions. You can choose Caption size and style and whether to Show captions. YouTube Help
iPhone and iPad
- Open the video and tap the player to reveal the controls.
- Tap Closed captions to turn them on; tap it again to turn them off. YouTube Help
For device-level caption settings, open iOS Settings > Accessibility > Hearing > Subtitles & Captioning. There you can choose a style, create a new style, or enable Closed Captions + SDH, as appropriate. YouTube Help

Turn captions on on a TV or game console
- Pause the video.
- Open Captions.
- Select the caption language you want.
To change how captions look, open Caption style. Available appearance settings include font and background and window options. Menu labels can vary by device. YouTube Help
Choose a caption language or use auto-translate
Open the player’s More menu, choose Captions, and select a language listed there. If your preferred language is not listed under Subtitles/CC, choose Auto-translate and then select the target language. The translated captions depend on captions being available to translate; they are not a separately supplied human-reviewed subtitle track. YouTube Help

Why the CC button may be missing or captions may not appear
If the CC control is missing or unavailable, YouTube indicates that captions are not currently available for that video. The creator may not have provided a caption track, and YouTube may not have generated automatic captions. YouTube Help
Automatic captions can also take time to appear while audio is processed, may not be supported for the video’s language, and may be unavailable for long videos. Poor sound, speech the system cannot recognize, long silence at the start, and overlapping speakers can also prevent or reduce captioning quality. YouTube Help

What to know about automatic-caption accuracy
YouTube says speech-recognition technology can automatically create captions, but their quality may vary. Mispronunciations, accents, dialects, and background noise can cause spoken content to be represented incorrectly. Treat automatic captions as an aid rather than a guaranteed transcript, especially when exact wording matters. YouTube Help
