Connect your phone or computer to the router’s Wi-Fi, or connect a computer to one of its LAN ports with Ethernet. In a browser’s address bar, enter http://192.168.1.1. If the router’s sign-in page opens, log in with that router’s administrator credentials. A working internet connection is not necessarily required; your device does need a local connection to the router.
Open the router’s local sign-in page
- Join the router’s own Wi-Fi network, or connect a computer to a LAN port on the router using Ethernet. Do not rely on mobile data, a guest network, or a different nearby router.
- Open a web browser and type
http://192.168.1.1into the address bar—not a search box—then press Enter. - When prompted, enter the administrator username and password for the router.
The administration page is hosted on the router and is accessed over the local network. TP-Link describes its DSL modem-router management page as a built-in interface that does not require internet service, provided the device is connected to the router: TP-Link DSL modem-router guidance. This is vendor guidance for that product category, not a guarantee about every router.

What if 192.168.1.1 does not open?
192.168.1.1 is a common router address, not a universal one. The correct address depends on the router and network configuration. Check the router’s label, manual, or the manufacturer’s support instructions for your exact model. Linksys documents this address for its Smart WiFi interface, while TP-Link lists other possible addresses for some product families in its router login and troubleshooting guide.
Find the address on Windows
- Open Command Prompt.
- Type
ipconfigand press Enter. - Under the currently connected Wi-Fi or Ethernet adapter, find Default gateway.
- Enter that address in your browser’s address bar.
Microsoft’s Windows instructions use 192.168.1.1 as an example of a default gateway; it is not an address guaranteed for every network. See Microsoft’s Wi-Fi troubleshooting guidance.
#1 Best Overall
- DUAL-BAND WIFI 6 ROUTER: Wi-Fi 6(802.11ax) technology achieves faster speeds, greater capacity and reduced network congestion compared to the previous gen. All WiFi routers require a separate modem. Dual-Band WiFi routers do not support the 6 GHz band.
- AX1800: Enjoy smoother and more stable streaming, gaming, downloading with 1.8 Gbps total bandwidth (up to 1200 Mbps on 5 GHz and up to 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz). Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
- CONNECT MORE DEVICES: Wi-Fi 6 technology communicates more data to more devices simultaneously using revolutionary OFDMA technology
- EXTENSIVE COVERAGE: Achieve the strong, reliable WiFi coverage with Archer AX1800 as it focuses signal strength to your devices far away using Beamforming technology, 4 high-gain antennas and an advanced front-end module (FEM) chipset
- OUR CYBERSECURITY COMMITMENT: TP-Link is a signatory of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s (CISA) Secure-by-Design pledge. This device is designed, built, and maintained, with advanced security as a core requirement.
Try a wired connection or another browser
If you are connected to the router’s Wi-Fi but the page still does not load, try connecting a computer to a LAN port with Ethernet, then enter the confirmed router address again. You can also try another browser. If the problem continues, follow the manufacturer’s troubleshooting instructions for your model.
Handle browser privacy warnings carefully
TP-Link notes that some browsers may show a privacy warning when accessing its DSL interface because of a self-signed certificate. Do not assume every warning is harmless: first verify that the address is the local address for your own router, then consult the manufacturer’s model-specific instructions. A warning on an unfamiliar page is not a reason to proceed.

- Dual-band Wi-Fi with 5 GHz speeds up to 867 Mbps and 2.4 GHz speeds up to 300 Mbps, delivering 1200 Mbps of total bandwidth¹. Dual-band routers do not support 6 GHz. Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
- Covers up to 1,000 sq. ft. with four external antennas for stable wireless connections and optimal coverage.
- Supports IGMP Proxy/Snooping, Bridge and Tag VLAN to optimize IPTV streaming
- Access Point Mode - Supports AP Mode to transform your wired connection into wireless network, an ideal wireless router for home
- Advanced Security with WPA3 - The latest Wi-Fi security protocol, WPA3, brings new capabilities to improve cybersecurity in personal networks
What if the router rejects the password?
The administrator password is separate from the Wi-Fi password used to join the network. Router login details vary: some older models may use a printed or factory default, while newer models may require an administrator password created during setup. Check the label, manual, or official documentation for the exact model rather than assuming a default such as admin will work.
Recommended Free Tools
If you have forgotten the administrator password, first check whether the router offers password recovery or whether your internet provider or manufacturer can help. TP-Link’s password-recovery guidance describes options for supported models.

- Full Gigabit Ports - Gigabit Router with 4 Gigabit LAN ports, ideal for any internet plan and allow you to directly connect your wired devices
- Boosted Coverage - Four external antennas equipped with Beamforming technology extend and concentrate the Wi-Fi signals
- MU-MIMO technology - (5GHz band) allows high speeds for multiple devices simultaneously
- Access Point Mode - Supports AP Mode to transform your wired connection into wireless network, an ideal wireless router for home
Why factory reset should be a last resort
A factory reset may restore access on some routers, but it can erase customized administrator, Wi-Fi, and internet settings. You may need your provider’s connection details or the manufacturer’s setup instructions to configure the router again. Before resetting, confirm the consequences for your model and contact your ISP if it manages the equipment. TP-Link’s reset guidance explains the process for its supported products.

If the router still uses default administrator credentials, change them using the security settings and instructions for your model. Microsoft also recommends WPA3 when both the router and the connecting PC support it; available options depend on your equipment. See Microsoft’s wireless-network security guidance. Do not enable public-internet access to the administration page merely to solve a local connection problem; use the manufacturer’s or ISP’s instructions for remote management, if applicable.
