You can turn on your computer’s built-in power-saving mode in Settings, but the name and path depend on your operating system. Windows 11 24H2 and later calls it Energy saver; earlier Windows versions call it Battery saver. On a Mac, look for Low Power Mode. Linux steps depend on your desktop environment, with separate routes for GNOME and KDE Plasma.
Turn on battery saver in Windows
The setting’s name depends on your Windows release. Microsoft says Windows 11 version 24H2 and later uses Energy saver, replacing Battery saver. Earlier Windows 11 releases and Windows 10 use Battery saver.

Windows 11 version 24H2 or later
- Open Settings > System > Power & battery.
- Under Energy saver, turn it on. You can also configure an automatic battery-level threshold there.
You can also turn on Energy saver from the battery icon’s Quick Settings. The labels and layout can vary with Windows version. Microsoft Support explains the setting, and documents Energy saver in Windows 11.

Windows 11 version 24H1 or earlier, and Windows 10
- Open Settings > System > Power & battery.
- Turn on Battery saver, or set the battery-level threshold for automatic activation if that option is available in your version.
Microsoft says, “When battery saver is on, your PC temporarily turns off some things that use a lot of power, like automatic email and calendar syncing, live tile updates, and apps you’re not actively using.” The exact changes depend on your Windows version and settings. Microsoft’s Battery saver guidance covers the older label.

Turn on Low Power Mode in macOS
On macOS Ventura or later, Apple calls the feature Low Power Mode. You can choose whether it applies while the Mac is using its battery or connected to power.
macOS Ventura or later
- Open Apple menu > System Settings > Battery. On a desktop Mac, open System Settings > Energy instead.
- Choose Low Power Mode from the Energy Mode menu under On battery.
If you want the mode while plugged in, use the separate On the power adapter options where available. Apple says Low Power Mode reduces energy use to increase battery life, but does not specify a fixed runtime gain. Some options and labels vary by macOS release and Mac model. macOS Monterey or earlier
- Open Apple menu > System Preferences > Battery.
- Select Battery in the sidebar.
- Choose Low Power from the Energy Mode menu.
Turn on power saving in Linux
Linux has no single desktop-wide settings route. The instructions depend on your distribution’s desktop environment and, in some cases, hardware support. If you do not see the options below, identify your desktop environment before looking for an equivalent setting.

GNOME
- Open Activities and search for Power.
- Open the Power panel.
- Under Power Mode, select Power Saver.
GNOME describes Power Saver as a mode that reduces power use and performance to maximize battery life. Whether the option is available depends in part on hardware support. See GNOME’s power-profile documentation.

KDE Plasma
- Open System Settings > Power Management.
- Review the controls for On AC Power, On Battery, and On Low Battery, then adjust the relevant behavior for your needs.
KDE organizes power-management settings around those power-source states rather than one universal toggle. Available settings and profiles can vary. See KDE’s Power Management documentation.

These modes reduce power use by changing system behavior. Depending on the platform and selected settings, that can mean less background activity or reduced performance. None of the cited platform documentation establishes a guaranteed battery-life increase or a controlled comparison between Windows, macOS, and Linux, so actual runtime depends on the computer and how you use it.
