To have supported AirPods pause audio when you fall asleep, turn on Pause Media When Falling Asleep in the AirPods settings on your iPhone, iPad, Mac, or Apple TV. Apple lists AirPods 4 or later and AirPods Pro 2 or later as compatible. Wear and connect your AirPods before looking for the setting.
Turn on sleep pausing on iPhone or iPad
- Put on compatible AirPods and connect them to your iPhone or iPad.
- Open Settings and tap your AirPods near the top of the screen.
- Turn on Pause Media When Falling Asleep. If you don’t see it, check Audio & Routing.

Turn on the setting on Mac
- Wear your compatible AirPods and connect them to your Mac.
- Open System Settings and select your AirPods in the sidebar.
- Turn on Pause Media When Falling Asleep. If it isn’t immediately visible, look under Audio & Routing.
Turn on the setting on Apple TV
Open Control Centre, select your AirPods, then enable the sleep-pause option. Apple includes Apple TV among the devices that support this feature.

Check compatibility if the option is missing
Apple identifies AirPods 4 or later and AirPods Pro 2 or later as compatible. Make sure the AirPods are worn and connected to the device while you check their settings. On iPhone, iPad, or Mac, also look in Audio & Routing. Apple’s compatibility guidance appears in its AirPods settings instructions.

How sleep pausing differs from Automatic Ear Detection
Automatic Ear Detection responds to whether an AirPod is in your ear: Apple says playback pauses when you remove one and resumes when you put it back. Sleep pausing is a separate setting intended to pause media when you fall asleep. For details about the ear-detection setting, see Apple’s guides to playing audio on AirPods and changing AirPods settings.
What Apple doesn’t specify
Apple’s guidance names the supported models and devices, but does not explain how sleep is detected, how long pausing takes, or whether behavior is identical in every audio app. Don’t assume a particular detection method or pause interval.
