To make Gboard capitalize the first letter as you begin sentences, open any app with a text field, bring up Gboard, open Settings, choose Text correction, and switch on Auto-capitalization.
You can reach Gboard’s settings from the keyboard itself or through your Android device’s keyboard settings. The names and locations of surrounding menus can differ by phone manufacturer and Gboard version, but the control you need is called Auto-capitalization.

What Auto-capitalization changes
Auto-capitalization is Gboard’s text-correction setting for automatically changing a letter to uppercase when Gboard detects the beginning of a sentence or another place where capitalization is expected. It is intended to save you from manually using the Shift key after punctuation or when starting a new line.

The setting does not turn every character into uppercase. It is different from enabling Caps Lock, which makes an entire run of typing appear in capitals. Auto-capitalization is also not a general guarantee that every app will handle capitalization identically. Community reports describe differences between apps, so treat the setting as a Gboard preference whose behavior can depend on the text field and app.

What you should see after enabling it
- Tap a text field and begin typing a sentence.
- After you finish a sentence and start the next one, Gboard should normally offer an initial capital letter where its text-correction rules recognize a sentence start.
- The keyboard’s Shift key may appear active for the first letter, then return to its normal state after that letter is entered.
If you are trying to make the single-letter word “i” become “I,” test it at the start of a sentence and in the specific app where the problem occurs. The setting is called Auto-capitalization; it is not a separate “capitalize the pronoun I everywhere” switch.
Turn on Auto-capitalization from the Gboard keyboard
This is Google’s documented route and is usually the quickest because you do not need to search through your phone’s system menus.
- Open a text field. Launch an app such as Gmail or Keep, or any other app with a place to type. Tap inside the field so that Gboard appears.
- Open Gboard Settings. Depending on your keyboard layout, touch and hold the comma (,) key and move your finger to the Settings icon. On layouts that show Gboard’s feature toolbar, open the keyboard feature menu, tap More, and then tap Settings.
- Open Text correction. In Gboard Settings, tap Text correction. This page contains the capitalization control along with other typing-correction options.
- Enable Auto-capitalization. Find Auto-capitalization and turn on its switch. Android normally saves the change immediately; there is no separate save button.
- Return to the text field. Use the back gesture or back button to return to the app, then type a short test sentence rather than relying on text you had already entered.
If you cannot see the Settings icon
Gboard can present different toolbars and key layouts. First look for a four-square, arrow, or feature-menu button along the keyboard’s top row. Tap it, choose More, and look for Settings. If your layout does not expose that menu, hold the comma key and slide toward the gear icon instead.

The comma-key gesture is a long press, not an ordinary tap. Keep your finger on the comma until the shortcut appears, then move to the settings symbol without lifting. If a normal tap inserts a comma, try again with a longer hold.
Use Android Settings when Gboard is not open
You can also reach the same Gboard controls from the Android Settings app. Menu names are not identical on every phone, so use this as an example path rather than a universal sequence:
- Open the device’s Settings app.
- Open the section for System, Keyboard, or Language and input, depending on the device.
- Choose the on-screen or virtual-keyboard list.
- Tap Gboard.
- Tap Text correction.
- Turn on Auto-capitalization.
One community answer gives the illustrative path Settings > System > Keyboard > On screen keyboard > Gboard > Text correction. Your phone may use a different spelling, place the keyboard controls under a different heading, or omit one of those levels. If a Settings search is available, search for “Gboard,” “on-screen keyboard,” or “Text correction.”

Check that the change took effect
Use a controlled test so that an old sentence, an app-specific editor, or a missed toggle does not confuse the result.
Recommended Free Tools
- Close or leave the app in which you were typing and open a simple text field again.
- Tap the field and confirm that the keyboard shown is Gboard. The keyboard’s appearance and settings shortcut should correspond to Gboard, not another enabled keyboard.
- Type a short sentence, insert sentence-ending punctuation, add a space, and begin another sentence.
- Observe whether the first letter is offered in uppercase before continuing.
- Repeat the same test in the app where you originally noticed the problem.
If it works in one app but not another, record the app name and version, your phone model and Android version, and the Gboard version. Those details are more useful than assuming that one app limitation applies everywhere. Community reports describe inconsistent behavior across apps, but they do not establish a universal compatibility rule.
Examples of useful tests
| Test | What it checks | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| Start a new sentence in a basic note field | Whether the toggle is active in a simple editor | If the initial letter is uppercase, the core setting is working there. |
| Repeat the test in the problem app | Whether that app’s text field behaves differently | A difference points to an app or field-specific behavior, not necessarily a missing Gboard setting. |
| Type a standalone “i” at the beginning of a sentence | Whether the case you care about is a sentence-start case | Compare the result with the same test after confirming the toggle is on. |
| Open Gboard Settings again | Whether the switch actually remained enabled | If it is off, enable it again before investigating anything else. |
If Auto-capitalization is on but typing is still lowercase
Work through the checks below in order. They separate a setting that is off from a setting that is on but behaving differently in a particular context.

1. Confirm the exact switch
Return to Gboard Settings > Text correction and look specifically for Auto-capitalization. Gboard has several correction and suggestion controls; changing another option will not enable this one. Make sure the switch visibly shows the on state, then return to the text field and run a new test.
2. Confirm that the active keyboard is Gboard
Android devices can have more than one keyboard available. The steps in this guide affect Gboard’s settings. If a different keyboard is active in the app, changing Gboard’s switch will not change that keyboard’s behavior. Tap a text field, inspect the keyboard that appears, and use the keyboard chooser if your device provides one to select Gboard.

4. Check the route on your particular device
If you cannot find the option through the keyboard, use Android Settings and look under the device’s keyboard or language-and-input area. Manufacturers reorganize these menus, and a path that is correct on one Android device may not match another. The destination remains the Gboard Text correction page.
5. Capture version and device details before seeking help
If the toggle is enabled and the result is still wrong, note:
- the phone or tablet model;
- the Android version;
- the Gboard version;
- the app in which the behavior occurs;
- whether the same test works in another app; and
- whether the problem affects sentence starts, the letter “I,” or all typing.
These details define the problem more precisely. Without them, prescribing a particular cause would be guesswork, because the available community evidence does not prove one universal explanation.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsHow to turn the feature off
If Gboard changes capitalization in a way you do not want, follow the same route back to Gboard Settings > Text correction and switch Auto-capitalization off. Google’s troubleshooting guidance specifically documents turning the option off when it causes unwanted alterations.
After switching it off, return to a text field and type a new test. Text already entered in an app will not necessarily be rewritten simply because the preference changed; judge the result on text you type afterward.
Which route should you use?
| Route | Best when | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Gboard keyboard: hold comma and move to Settings | Gboard is already visible and you want the shortest path | The gesture can be difficult to discover, and key layouts vary. |
| Gboard feature menu: More > Settings | Your layout shows the feature toolbar | The More button and toolbar arrangement may differ by version. |
| Android Settings: keyboard or language-and-input section > Gboard | You cannot open Gboard’s toolbar or need to change settings before opening an app | Menu names and nesting vary substantially by device. |
All three routes should lead to the same control: Text correction > Auto-capitalization. Choose the route that is visible on your device rather than trying to force an exact menu sequence from another phone.
Quick Recap
Important limits to keep in mind
- Android scope: These instructions cover Gboard on Android. They do not establish equivalent steps for Gboard on iOS or for every manufacturer’s keyboard interface.
- Version differences: The location of the keyboard feature menu, More button, and Settings shortcut can change between Gboard versions.
- App differences: Reports of different results between apps exist, but the evidence does not support claiming that a particular app universally disables capitalization.
- Text-field context: A text field can apply its own editing behavior. Compare a simple field with the field that shows the problem before concluding that the Gboard switch failed.
- Not Caps Lock: Auto-capitalization handles expected capitalization points; it is not a command to write an entire message in uppercase.
Quick checklist
- Open an app with a text field and show Gboard.
- Open Gboard Settings by holding the comma key or using the feature menu and More.
- Tap Text correction.
- Turn on Auto-capitalization.
- Test a new sentence in the original app and in another simple text field.
- If results differ, record the app, device, Android version, and Gboard version before troubleshooting further.
