How to Free Up Google Photos Storage Without Losing Your Originals

First identify which storage is full. Google Photos can consume space in two separate places: the phone or tablet’s local storage, and the Google Account quota shared by Photos, Drive, and Gmail. Android’s Free up space on this device removes backed-up local copies and leaves the cloud library intact; it does not lower your Google Account usage. To reclaim account quota, use Photos’ storage-management tools, convert eligible uploads to Storage saver, or delete cloud items only after you have verified an independent copy.

Decide whether you need device space or Google Account space

A full phone and a full Google Account require different remedies. If your camera app cannot save pictures, check the device’s storage settings. If Google Photos stops backing up or Google warns that your account is nearly full, inspect Google Photos’ storage-management page or your Google Account storage view. The account quota is shared across Google Photos, Drive, and Gmail, so deleting photos may not be the only way to create room. Each Google Account comes with up to 15 GB of storage, although the quota shown on your account is the one that controls your available space.

Action Storage it frees What happens to the original Main risk or trade-off
Free up space on this device (Android) Phone or tablet storage The backed-up cloud item remains; the device copy is removed The item is unavailable offline and in the built-in gallery
Delete backed-up items in Google Photos Google Account quota, but only for items that counted The cloud item is moved to Trash and later permanently deleted Deletion can propagate to synced devices
Convert existing uploads to Storage saver Google Account quota, when eligible Original quality files are reduced The cloud copy remains at reduced settings; it is no longer the exact uploaded file Resolution or other information can be reduced, and some files are not eligible
Google Takeout export None by itself Creates a downloadable copy; Google’s server copy remains The archive still needs verification and separate deletion if you want quota back

Check backup status before removing anything

Seeing a picture in the Google Photos app does not prove that it is safely backed up. The app can also show files that are still only on the device. Before using any cleanup command, confirm that the intended Google Account is signed in and inspect the item’s backup status or details in Photos.

  • Open a recent photo or video and view its details; look for the backed-up status rather than relying on its thumbnail.
  • Check several items from different dates, including the newest files, because a stalled upload can leave only older pictures protected.
  • Confirm that you recognize the account shown in the profile menu. Backing up to a different account changes which quota and library are involved.
  • Keep the phone on a reliable connection and allow pending uploads to finish before cleanup.
  • For irreplaceable files, open photos.google.com in a browser and confirm that representative items appear there under the same account. This is an additional check, not a substitute for inspecting backup details on the device.

Google’s own Android instruction is blunt: before deleting photos from a device, make sure they are backed up. Treat that check as a prerequisite, not an optional warning.

Free phone or tablet space while keeping the cloud originals

Use this route when the device is full but your Google Account has room. It removes local copies that Google says are already backed up; the items remain viewable in Google Photos and at photos.google.com while you are signed in.

  1. Open the Google Photos app on Android and sign in to the account that contains the backup.
  2. Tap your profile picture or initial.
  3. Choose Free up space on this device.
  4. Review the amount of space Google says can be reclaimed and the items it plans to remove.
  5. Confirm the operation only after checking that the listed content is backed up.

Photos and videos removed by this tool remain in the cloud library, but the local files will not be available through the phone’s built-in gallery or without an internet connection. You must be signed in to Google Photos to view the cloud versions. Google also notes that photos and videos less than 30 days old may remain on the device, so the reported result may be smaller than expected.

If the phone’s gallery still shows a thumbnail

Gallery apps can cache thumbnails or display cloud integrations even after the full local file is gone. Open the item while offline to test whether a true local copy remains; do not interpret a thumbnail alone as proof that the original file is stored on the device. If you need offline access, copy the file to another local folder or computer before using device cleanup.

See what is consuming your Google Account quota

When the account—not the handset—is full, start with Google Photos’ storage-management tool. It can surface categories such as large photos and videos and estimate the space eligible items could release. The estimate is not a promise that every selected item will reduce the quota: files that never counted toward the quota cannot create additional headroom.

  1. Open Google Photos and go to its storage-management area from the account or settings interface.
  2. Review each suggested category rather than selecting everything at once.
  3. Open individual items and check their dates, contents, and backup details.
  4. Keep anything that is your only copy, legally or personally important, or needed in its original quality.
  5. Delete only the items you have deliberately approved, then check Trash and the account’s storage meter.

Google Account storage includes Drive and Gmail. If Photos cleanup produces less space than expected, inspect large Drive files, Gmail attachments, and other account data instead of repeatedly deleting pictures. Google’s policy also treats historical uploads differently: Storage saver or Express items backed up before June 1, 2021 do not count toward the quota, while Original quality items count regardless of upload date. Removing a non-counting item cannot lower the meter.

Why the estimated savings can differ from the final number

The tool is estimating eligible, quota-counting data. A selected item may be excluded because it was already covered by a historical free-storage policy, because another account owns the backup, or because account calculations have not finished updating. After a large deletion, wait for the storage view to recalculate, then check Drive and Gmail as well as Photos. Do not keep deleting personal files simply because the first meter reading has not changed.

Convert existing uploads to Storage saver

Storage saver is a middle path when you want to retain a cloud library but do not require every upload to remain at its exact captured resolution. Google documents the conversion for existing eligible Original quality uploads separately from the setting that controls future backups.

What changes

Upload choice Preservation Quota treatment Known conversion effect
Original quality Same resolution as captured Counts toward the Google Account quota Best for exact-resolution photos and video above 1080p
Storage saver Slightly reduced quality; some files may be unchanged Current backups count; eligible existing Original quality files can be converted Photos over 16 megapixels may be resized to 16 MP; videos over 1080p may be resized to 1080p; some information, such as captions, can be lost

Run the conversion on a computer

  1. Open Google Photos in a desktop browser.
  2. Open Photos settings.
  3. Select Manage storage, then Recover storage.
  4. Choose Convert existing photos & videos to Storage saver.
  5. Read the estimate and confirmation text, then start the conversion only if the quality trade-off is acceptable.

Google limits this conversion to once per day. It applies only to eligible existing Original quality uploads; some items may not compress, including certain multi-picture-format JPEGs. Item details can identify files that are not eligible. The operation does not change the quality setting for future backups, so review the backup-quality setting separately if you want new uploads handled differently.

Storage saver is not the same as an archival original. Photos above 16 MP can be resized to 16 MP, and videos above 1080p can be resized to 1080p. If you crop, print, edit, or reuse high-resolution material, keep an Original quality export first. Once a file has been reduced, changing a setting cannot recreate the discarded resolution or information.

Export a verified copy before cloud cleanup

Google Takeout can create a Google Photos archive, which is the safest preparation for irreversible deletion or quality conversion. The export itself does not free quota: downloading a copy does not delete Google’s server copy.

  1. Start a Google Takeout export and include Google Photos data.
  2. Choose an archive format and delivery method that leave enough room for the complete download.
  3. For a nearly full Google Account, prefer a download to your computer. Sending the archive to Google Drive also uses the same account storage you are trying to reclaim.
  4. Download every archive part and keep it in a safe location with sufficient capacity. An external drive is an option, but it is only useful if it is reliable and stored safely.
  5. Open the archive and sample photos and videos from different years. Check that files open, that the expected dates and albums are present, and that the archive is not merely a list of metadata.
  6. Only after verification, return to Google Photos to delete the cloud items you no longer want online.

Keep at least one copy on a different storage system from the account you are cleaning. An archive saved only in Google Drive is still dependent on the same Google Account quota and is not an independent fallback. Takeout cannot recover content that has already been permanently deleted, so retain the verified archive until your long-term storage plan is working.

Delete cloud copies while keeping a local copy: the advanced method

Deleting from the Photos interface is not automatically local-only. Google says deletion can remove corresponding content from Android, iPhone, and iPad devices where Photos is installed and backup is on. Depending on the device and operating system, downloaded local copies can also be removed. If you want to remove the cloud copy but deliberately keep files on a particular device, stop backup on that device before deleting.

  1. On every device that must retain the local files, verify that the files really exist in local storage—not only as cloud thumbnails.
  2. Turn off backup in Google Photos on those devices.
  3. Using a browser at photos.google.com, select the backed-up items you want removed and delete them.
  4. Leave backup off on the retaining devices while you confirm that the local files remain and that the cloud deletion is complete.
  5. Back up the local files elsewhere before turning backup on again, if they are irreplaceable.

Google warns that re-enabling backup can cause an item to be backed up again or can remove the device copy. This workflow is therefore unsuitable for a quick cleanup: it requires a verified local copy, controlled device settings, and a plan for future synchronization. If several phones or tablets share the account, repeat the check on each one before deleting.

Understand Trash and permanent deletion

Items deleted through Google Photos go to Trash. Google’s help guidance says they are retained for 30 days before permanent deletion; after that, or after you empty Trash, they cannot be restored. Trash is a temporary holding area, not a second backup.

  • During the 30-day window, use Restore only when you deliberately want the item returned to the library; restoring does not create an additional backup.

Choose the least destructive option

  • Phone full, cloud library trusted: use Free up space on this device.
  • Account nearly full, exact quality important: export and verify originals, then delete only selected counted items or free space in Drive and Gmail.
  • Account nearly full, modest quality reduction acceptable: use the documented Recover storage conversion, after exporting anything that must remain exact.
  • Cloud copies no longer wanted but local files must remain: use the advanced backup-off workflow and verify the device copies first.
  • Unsure what is safe: stop, export, and inspect the archive before deleting or converting anything.

Common mistakes and how to avoid them

Expecting phone cleanup to lower the account meter

The Android device-space command changes local storage only. Use the account storage-management tool for Google Account quota.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Assuming visibility means backup

A local-only item can appear in the Photos app. Check backup status and the signed-in account before removing a device copy.

Deleting in Photos while another device is synchronized

Deletion can propagate to devices with Photos installed and backup enabled. Pause backup where a local copy must survive.

Confusing a Takeout download with deletion

An export creates a copy and leaves the server copy intact. Quota is reclaimed only by a separate eligible deletion or conversion.

Assuming every file will shrink

Storage saver has resolution limits and eligibility exceptions. Review the conversion details and retain an export when quality is important.

Free tools Windows power users keep installed

Changing the future backup setting and expecting old files to change

Choosing Storage saver for future uploads does not retroactively convert existing Original quality files. Use the separate Recover storage conversion for eligible files already in the library.

Using Google Drive as the export destination when the account is full

An archive delivered to Drive consumes the same account storage pool. Download to a computer first, then copy the archive to another safe location.

Troubleshooting a cleanup that did not free space

The phone still reports low storage

Device cleanup may leave recent photos—especially items less than 30 days old—on the phone. Cached thumbnails, videos in another gallery folder, downloads, and app data can also consume local space. Recheck the device storage breakdown rather than assuming the cloud library is the cause.

Google Photos still says the account is full

Confirm that you deleted items that counted toward quota, wait for the account meter to refresh, and inspect Drive and Gmail. Deleting historical Storage saver or Express uploads from before June 1, 2021 will not help because those items do not count under the stated policy.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Some files were not converted

Recover storage applies only to eligible existing Original quality files. Certain multi-picture-format JPEGs and other files identified in their details may remain unchanged. Treat the estimate as a ceiling, not a guarantee.

A safe maintenance routine

  1. Check the device and account meters separately.
  2. Let current uploads finish and verify backup status on recent items.
  3. Export irreplaceable Original quality files and test the archive.
  4. Use device-only cleanup for a full phone.
  5. Use storage management, eligible conversion, or carefully selected deletion for a full account.
  6. Review Trash during the 30-day recovery window, then keep a verified independent archive before permanent deletion.

The safest principle is simple: remove local copies only after backup verification, and remove cloud copies only after deciding whether you have an independent original-quality copy. Google’s labels and policies can change, so read the confirmation screen in your current app or account before committing an irreversible action.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does “Free up space on this device” reduce my Google Account storage?

No. On Android it removes local copies that Google says are already backed up. The cloud library remains, so it frees phone or tablet storage rather than the shared Google Account quota.

How can I tell whether a photo is backed up?

Open the item in Google Photos, view its details, and check the backup status while signed in to the intended account. Also check recent items at photos.google.com; appearance in the app alone is not proof of backup.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Will deleting a photo in Google Photos delete it from my phone?

It can. Google says deletion may affect Android, iPhone, and iPad devices where Photos is installed and backup is enabled, and downloaded local copies can also be removed. Turn backup off on a device that must retain a verified local copy before deleting in the browser.

Does Google Takeout free storage automatically?

No. Takeout creates a downloadable archive and leaves Google’s server copy in place. Download and inspect the archive, then separately delete eligible cloud items if you want quota back.

What quality do I lose with Storage saver?

Storage saver slightly reduces quality. Photos over 16 megapixels may be resized to 16 MP, videos over 1080p may be resized to 1080p, and some information such as captions can be lost. Some files are not eligible and may remain unchanged.

Can I undo a Storage saver conversion?

Do not rely on undo. Export Original quality files before conversion if the exact uploaded file matters; a later setting change cannot recreate discarded resolution or information.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How long do deleted Google Photos stay recoverable?

Deleted items remain in Trash for 30 days under Google’s guidance. Emptying Trash or reaching the end of that period makes deletion permanent, and Takeout cannot recover permanently deleted content.

Why did deleting photos free less space than expected?

Only quota-counting items reduce the meter. Storage saver or Express uploads backed up before June 1, 2021 do not count, and account calculations can take time to update. Check Drive and Gmail because they share the same quota.

The Bottom Line

Match the cleanup to the storage pool: use Android’s device-only command for a full phone, and use storage management, eligible Storage saver conversion, or deliberate cloud deletion for a full Google Account. Verify backup first, export and test irreplaceable originals, and remember that synced deletion and permanent Trash cleanup are not reversible.
